Restoring a Vandalized Band of Brothers Site | History Traveler Episode 135

Currahee Mountain in Toccoa, GA is a special place. Historically, it is where men from 4 different parachute infantry regiments trained in preparation to fight tyranny abroad in WWII. Among these where the men of Easy Company, 506th PIR who were made famous in the series Band of Brothers. This place also holds importance to rock climbers and people who want to take in the scenic vista and reflect on the beauty of God's creation. But over the years, the top of Currahee has been marred by vandals who have spray painted the rocks there.
In November of 2020, I posted a video from the top of Currahee to draw attention to the problem (link below). It it, I suggested that we get a group together to fix this problem. The response was overwhelming. People from all over the world reached out to see what they could do. In the end, we raised money from across the globe and had people from across the U.S. show up to work in conjunctions with the Currahee Cleanup Project to start the monumental task of restoring this place to its natural state.
This video is a testament to what can happen when people band together and commit themselves to doing good. Please consider supporting the businesses and organizations that helped to make this clean up a success.

YES you are correct, but if i imagine the Romans would have carved all the graffitis off the Coluseum ( Old names of visitors are carved in the stone) that would be sad, it just tells another story of the place. I know it doesnt belong to the old state of the place, but isnt it history itself? What if some of the people who trained there and came back to leave their mark for example. I do understand tho that you guys cleaned that place.

My pap pap served in WWII. He never spoke about it. When we would ask him about his service, he should shut us down, sometimes very loudly, that it was none of our business. All we knew is that he served. A few years after his death, I learned from one of my uncles that he had served in the 11th Airborne in the Philippines. I never knew that the 11th had trained at this historic site until I watched this video. I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart and soul, for bringing this to light for me. I have a renewed drive to find out more in regards to his service. I had discovered that most documents in regards to WWII, including enlistment and discharge papers, were tragically lost in a warehouse fire some time ago. All I have are memories and documents now as both nana and pap pap are gone. I again thank you for the wonderful historical videos that you produce.

Thank you, Jim, and God bless you, from a just few years younger sister, US Coast Guard mom. I loved making the 101ST AIRBORNE SCREAMING EAGLES in stained glass to honor fallen soldiers. I started doing stained glass to keep me up off the ground when my only child was chosen to serve, the first since his WW2 Marine Uncle Bill, then joined 82nd for Korea, PH recip. Home to Jesus at 90 in 2015. God bless you for your service to our nation.

Made my day, seeing folks from across the country coming together for this restoration effort. My dad would have been very happy with your effort, as he was a member of the 11th Airborne, though gaining his jump wings late, in Japan, as part of the occupation forces. Just this past weekend, I drove past the house he grew up in - could see him standing there, in his uniform. Current owners are taking very good care of the home. I still have his dress uniform jacket and hat.

Alot of brave men never returned and died 1000's of kilometers from home, and the people they loved. A bit late to the party on this one, but just want to thank you for what you did here with these great people. I'm born and raised in Toccoa and if you remember the parachute shaped monument just outside the gates of the camp there is a little information kiosk off behind it, I build that with my troop when I was 17 for an Eagle Scout project so I have some personal investment in the history of Currahee and the men who trained there. Just wanted to make sure you know how much we appreciate it!

Quite memorable that these volunteers provided their time to such an iconic site on this US Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to all. Hopefully Marks comments of "Wreak Havoc on Ignorance" will prompt the local High School Principals to do the same. I went to Currahee Mountain in November 2020 as my first trip out of my house (besides work) since COVID. I was so excited, being a former paratrooper with several years on jump status, deployed veteran, and fan of BOB. I've always regretted not being born 40 years earlier so I could have trained and deployed with young airborne studs like Dick Winters, Lewis Nixon, and others in the 101st, 11th, and 17th ABN. I was so excited to get to the top of Currahee only to be horrified at the graffiti at the top. I know one thing. Not a single heathen who vandalized Currahee volunteered and signed on the dotted line to put themselves at risk for America, volunteered to go to airborne school, volunteered for an airborne unit, or deployed in defense of America and its allies. Thank you for your work and restoring my faith that there are still good people in America. AATW!

RTK. Hi I'm England too. I'm thinking that maybe JD might give thought to "Go Pro- ing" the site. I imagine the "nasties" with their "rattle cans" get there in/on vehicles. From the entrance up to the rocks could be surveilled. Maybe a 24hr set up live stream. Without, of course, informing the miscreants that CCTV has been installed. There may even be some interesting wildlife night time spin off action. JAT.

Everyone, and I mean _everyone_ who was in the Army watched Band of Brothers during that time. It showed us a history we could be proud of and shared experiences to laugh or be solemn over because some things, no matter the difference in time, never change in military life. Watching ya'll scrub and power wash those Currahee rocks clean felt like part of the American soul was being cleaned as well. Thank you for doing this.
