Abraham Lincoln's prized possessions in peril

A large number of President Abraham Lincoln’s personal possessions have survived more than 150 years after his death. Many items are on display at the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Illinois. Adriana Diaz reports on how the artifacts could go to the highest bidder.

When I was a small child we visited the Detroit museum where Abraham Lincoln's rocking chair was on display. Back in the day you could sit in it and my teacher asked if anyone wanted to sit in the chair, and I was the only one who raised my hand. I felt a chill the moment I sat down in the chair, and I was beaming ear to ear. I still remember the day as if it was yesterday and the feeling I felt when I sat in the chair such energy came from this one piece of furniture. I always felt a connection to Abraham Lincoln and I have read every book I could find on this president.

The items should be sold because then private collectors and members of the American public will have a chance to own them instead of them sitting in a vault at the library and held there forever and never put on display. I have seen this happen again and again. Rare items from a historical figure donated to a library or institution for the public to see and the items are permanently kept in boxes because "the library has a staff shortage right now and the collection is being held in a vault until funds become available to be able to catalog the collection first." You notice all the materials related to Lincoln in that vault. Only "verified researchers" are ever given access to it or someone working at the library makes the decision of exactly what will be placed on public display and that is usually less than 1% of the collection. Be happy when these institutions are forced to sell these items because then members of the public can buy them and see them and they are not permanently kept in a vault for " qualified researchers" only.
