A bad day in a museum is better than a good day a lot of other places.

Thank you for this! I've been concerned about what to do with my old photo's and a family bible, ironically enough they're from my maternal ancestors who are all descended from the first settlers of Indiana! I'd like to donate what I have to the Indiana Historical Society and make them available to the public. I'd love to pass them on, but no one in my immediate family wants them, and I want them to be preserved for those who do. Keep on doing what you are doing, it's so important now.

Our local photo/video store did a fantastic job of scanning and preserving our old family photos from the 60s 70s and 80s. They were able to restore the color in some of the old photographs and put them all on a USB drive. The cost was a lot less than you would think. I would encourage everyone to act now and preserve your family history. Take some time during this quarantine to tell your kids your family history and identify everybody in the old photos before no one knows who those people are in the pictures.

Never heard of washing paper before. The things these people can do is almost like magic but sadly, those Civil War letters are beyond hope. The history lost makes me want to nearly cry.

Being able to touch these objects of historical interest helps bring us closer to the time. The Tudor ship Mary Rose is the best historical preservation I have ever been lucky enough to be in the same room as. Absolutely wonderful

I used to work at Michael's Arts and Crafts Store and I was department manager in the framing department. I remember we would measure and see lots of old pieces come through our hands. I would highly suggest that if you decided to preserve your photos/documents, have them custom framed. The processes we used to use were museum quality. All acid free mats, adhesives, and other preservation materials. I don't know about now, haven't worked there in over 15 years, but for highly treasured, expensive pieces, we would make the client take their items home after careful measurements, then make an appointment with us to put it all together after all materials were ordered. I loved seeing everyone's items they brought in, but unfortunately most people would 🤯 after seeing the prices $$$! But custom framing is an investment, one that I would highly recommend.

I've spent the past month or so sorting, scanning, and trying to preserve all of the family photos and paper items I've inherited, including tin-plate photos dating to the 1800's. Watching this has taught me to be a bit more careful, and to start wearing gloves when handling all of these photos!

Nice to hear her explain why they don’t wear gloves for books and paper while they do for photographs. As an archivist I’m constantly having to explain to people why I don’t wear them even though they say that they’ve seen people wearing them on Antiques Roadshow!

Yeah, I'm wanting to go back and some point and shoot some more content. I got a behind the scenes tour of their archives but didn't have time to film it all.

I wonder what conservation will be like in 200 years from now. We rarely write letters, post cards or use paper maps. Our photos and books are now digitised. I wonder will they last the test of time.

So many wows, unbelievable. Absolute astounded by the different types of products and their weir when being touched. And than you pull out your family history of WW2. Pfffff... so amazing. Thanks for sharing

Fascinating video, I think almost everyone has things that need to be preserved or fixed. I wished we could have seen the process of how somethings are restored, or saved, but I realize sometimes it's a long process. Great video.

Very cool. Preserving these old documents is so important. I have a similar photograph in the same type of tube I found in the barn at the back of the property I built my house on. The former owner (deceased) served in the Pacific in WWII. I also have my Father in law's yard long from his infantry company in WWII, but he had framed it so it's in pretty good shape. I am in the process of going through all his photos & documents and scanning them so the rest of the family can enjoy them too.

Oh wow. That is amazing. Lucky that you were able to find it in decent condition.

I worked with a guy who had run across a Civil War era sword. He brought it to work and used the shop's wire wheel to "shine it up". He removed the beautiful old patina that can only come with handling and time. Completely ruined it. Scroll work and all. Could have been a 200 to 500 dollar item maybe. But he reduced it to a worthless wall hanger. Probably wasnt worth 20 bucks anymore. Folks, if you dont know what you're doing, call somebody. There's just some things that you dont clean up. Some wooden furniture, some guns, it depends. Dont people watch The Antiques Roadshow anymore? lol -- Thanx for the tour JD.

He looked at me, kinda open-mouthed and he looked down at the "object" he was holding in his hands. He went from beaming smile to abject horror in a few seconds. I bet he dont ever do THAT again.

I am so happy the scourge to preservation that is scotch tape/ craft tape came up! Friends don’t let friends use it on their beloved old docs :)

She's beautiful and smart too. My mom was a WAVE Officer a Lt JG in the Navy. The officers from the USS INDIANAPOLIS (were at her apartment she shared with other females officers.) Howdy from Texas! That was a fascinating video. I only have two pictures of my late Dad during his WW2 service days. Both are from his K12 Navy Commissioning Program. He was a “90 day wonder” in 1944 and served as the XO of LSM-99. He too was at Okinawa like your uncle.

There is a similar lab like this at the Yale School of Medicine's Historical library in CT. It is an amazing place which utilizes many of these processes to preserve/restore books going back to B.C times.

This was such a fascinating episode. It was so interesting to see what is done to preserve history and memories.

J.D. I hope you can and able to get your uncle's picture and paper restored so you and your family can injoy the history of the items. I have a picture of my great grand parents and family my grandmother was born in 1907 and she is about 1-2 yrs old in it so I would guess that it is about 110 years old give or take a couple of years.

I really enjoy your videos. But one thing bothers me, when you say that someone is smarter then you. I think the appropriate thing to say is that they are more knowledgeable then you. Because I'm sure there's thing you know that they dont.

The "book conservator" needs to wear gloves while handling precious books....and STOP saying "UM" every other word.
