From Hollywood to Holy Woods | Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati | TEDxUniversityOfSanFrancisco

For most of us, a good education, financial prosperity and a happy marriage are the keys to a successful life, but Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati had all of that and left to become a nun in the Himalayas. In this astonishing, inspiring and funny talk, Sadhvi shares the story of growing up in Hollywood, graduating from Stanford then having a spiritual awakening on the Ganges River while on a backpacking trip to India. She provides the powerful insights and simple lessons that have transformed her life from pieces to peace. A talk to share!
Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, PhD is originally from Hollywood, California. At the age of twenty-five, after graduating from Stanford and in the midst of getting her PhD, she traveled to India with a backpack, on a short adventure. The unexpected spiritual awakening she had on the banks of the Ganges river transformed her life. She has lived in Rishikesh, India for the past 20 years and is a renowned spiritual leader, speaker, writer and social activist. She is the President of Divine Shakti Foundation, Secretary-General of the Global Interfaith WASH Alliance and Director of the annual International Yoga Festival at Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, India.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Around 90% of Hindu indians don't know even a 5% of Hinduism, it's texts, it's values. Now foreigners r seeking spiritualism in Sanatana Dharma. I must say they should take some lessons from this. This is Hinduism. This is the oldest, omnipresent and has all the required answers u ever find trouble with except one thing-the existence of God. This is the beauty of Hinduism that its not coined by some prophet. Its a combination of several thousand years of meditated, enlightened teachings. There doesn’t have to be a God to be spiritual or there may be God. Its deeper than any theory, ideology or any idea. You will never be forced or be preached to embrace Hinduism. Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism were derived form few concepts of Hinduism. (Sanatana Dharma). It's an ocean. Welcome to Hinduism. Namaste 🙏

After Independence we were separated from our religion/value/culture by our rulers. That changes are coming albeit slowly. Mr Lakahni can teach Hinduism in whole of UK but not in Indian school as we secular and UK is not! We (i.e. ruler and then imposed) interpreted definition of secular wrongly and rot started.

Most of us Hindus in India belong to Hinduism just because our forefathers did. At least I am. When I hear the explanations of choosing Hinduism by educated people like this revered Sadhviji after doing many years of research, that enlightens my mind. Truly Hinduism belong to all self-seeking and self-taught Humans. With lots of respect, Long Live Sadhviji and spread the light of her envisions.

Our British system of education and the Islamic history taught and imposed on us through education has made Indians forget the dharma - today we know “Jack and Jill went up the hill” but they don’t know the Mandukya Upanishad or the Chants of Rig Veda or the teachings of the Nath Sampradaya. Hindus don’t know and won’t believe what gifts are stored in their spiritual coffers by their ancestors. If a foreigner will take interest they will only then care about their own Heritage.

Nilesh Jathaar Vedas are not only sacred but it is the science and knowledge which ancient india adopted, have u read veda..? It is full of knowledge, it's not a religious book at all. Actually in Hinduism all the books like veda, upanishad, gita, purana etc are all knowledge oriented book , those are not religious book at all. But we modern indians made those books as religious book. And adopted Western science and technology books, but our science is far far superior than any Western theory. In our books everything is mentioned say it like Laws of gravitation, einstein theory of realitivity, boson particles or the God particles everything is mentioned in ancient indian books. It's not Newton who has discovered gravitation and calculadora. Religious book like quran, Bible etc.. which talks about propaganda. Remember one thing, when ever and even ever science has challenged veda , science has miserably failed in front of vedic knowledge, please don't make veda a religious book. That's all is my request.

When you see a spirtual awakend one, their inner peace is immediatly seen. I just look at the picture where she sits at the river, studying the self and it looks like the picture is whole. Not a person, but a completness in that scenery. Looking at it alone, gives me some peace.

Beautiful! But one thing I think is beautiful is the one, the hand is beautiful because it is not the foot, as one is beautiful because they are not the other. But they are not entirely distinct, thus, they are one in one, parts of a whole, not just a whole, having individual & collective identity, moving individually in unison, taking our place in the body & relishing in it, being as much of our greatest self that we can, not the greatest man, or writer, or singer, but the greatest me, the greatest self, in comparison to my potential, not others.

Dear Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati - your words and your life, and your disposition exude Truth and Love for humanity. Your Atma that is connected to the Love of Paramatma is incapable of living in a lie or in falsehood. Sanathana Dharam promotes the concept of service - Paropakaram Vahanti Nadya, Paropakaram Duhanti Gaaya Paropakaram Phalanti Vriksha, Paropakaram Idam Shareeram Which means: “Rivers flow for Paropkar, Cows give milk for Paropkar, Trees bear fruits for Paropkar, similarly this body is also meant for Paropkar.” And a candle that is lit by the divine light always available for others if they desire to be saved. Walk in your path boldly touching many lives.

Every human, irrespective of place where he or she comes from, religion, occupation, status, is bound by the karma. Every religion teaches the right way to happiness. Over time, politics, power groups, commercial forces have taken over the teachings, and confused the people in to pursuing wrong paths. Especially Hinduism being a confluence of thoughts of various people, groups, and learned people, thinkers, driven by the vedas, having lived the longest life, tells you the truth and various ways of reaching the goal and realising the purpose in life. Living ordinary or extrordinary lives on this earth, doing your karma what is bestowed on you, doing it with sincerity and respect and due care for other fellow beings, doing whatever you can do to help others who are not as gifted as you, one can attain HAPPINESS in this life itself!
