From Golden Girl to Child Killer?! | Exposed: The Case of Keli Lane | Part 1 | Aus Crime
21 years after the disappearance of two-day-old baby Tegan, investigative journalist Caro Meldrum-Hanna unexpectedly receives a letter from one of the most controversial convicted murderers in Australian history: former water polo champion Keli Lane.
Part 2 is here: • Secret Adoptions and M...
Part 3 is here: • Convicted of Infantici...
She is currently serving an 18-year jail term for the murder of her newborn daughter. Keli has long protested her innocence and she wants Caro to look into her case. But given Keli is a serial liar and her lies convinced a jury of her guilt, is she lying to Caro too? Caro starts her investigation by looking into the adoption of Keli’s third secret baby, a boy born in 1999, which inadvertently revealed the existence of two other secret babies: a girl who had been adopted out in 1995 and Tegan born in 1996, who could not be found. As Caro delves deep into Keli’s past of secrets and lies, a new picture of Keli’s seemingly perfect life, growing up in the northern beaches suburb of Manly and playing elite water polo, starts to emerge. It’s a picture that might explain Keli’s bizarre behaviour of multiple pregnancies and her determination to keep them secret. Caro’s eyes are opened by the discoveries she makes in a revealing series of interviews with Keli's parents, friends and boyfriends.

Something’s WAY off with the parents… not only do they seem cold, detached, in denial, and indifferent, but I’m curious to understand more of how Kelly grew up… it would probably explain Kelly’s psychology better.

Consider Ruby Franke, who thinks the best thing for her children is to forgive her and rebuild their relationship. That's delusional, and harmful, and those kids need her out of their lives. At least this woman understands that she would probably be disrupting a life built without her, so if her daughter doesn't want to meet her, it makes sense and is ok. That actually makes her a semi decent person. ...I don't happen to believe that Tegan is alive though, and I think keli is delusional, but that one statement isn't the condemnation that people think it is.

I have questions…coaches and players on the water polo team were talking about her being pregnant. Why did none of the coaches speak to her mother about it?! And Keli disappears from pub, goes to hospital and has a baby, is gone for a couple days., reappears for her 20th birthday, then goes back to the hospital again. Was she living at home at the time? Did her parents not wonder where she disappeared to from the pub? Her friends were calling hospitals, they must have contacted her parents. Somethings not right here…truth not being told.

If she gave that baby to her father, there was no reason for him not to come forward when all this was going on. She deserves to be where she is, but it is heartbreaking what she clearly went through growing up in the home with those statues for parents. No wonder she didn’t confide in them. It is clear that her upbringing caused her to be a pathological liar with narcissistic traits.

So sad for a young girl unable to confide in her mother. Sad too she didnt have a close best friend who could have helped her with her insecure life and decisions. She seemed to have invented a fantasy world to prevent herself from facing reality.

"So sad"? What if the child was 10 years old? What if she killed a 20 year old? She deliberately killed someone and you say so sad.

A mother not knowing about her daughter's several pregnancies is absolutely incredible. There are some very serious issues here... denial, indifference, indignation, you name it

22:35 Her moms saying she didnt think back and reflect on the previous years even after finding out of her daughters multiple pregnancies is so strange. More so being she is now in prison for killing one of those babies! Something isnt right with her.

The first thing the Mother wants you to oniw is she taught Kelli to respect others.she pointedly infers it's ranked at highest priority. She didn't complete the sentence with, she taught Kelly to respect herself. This is indicative of a narcissist who shaped their people pleasing child (trophies) to respect them and be submissive. They raised her to put their image first. The father mentioned her swimming made them look good. Poor Kelli.

Stop with the self pity. I guarantee if anyone asked if she was ok, she'd have said yes. She didn't have the experience of being allowed to ask for help.

20 week abortion is an abomination. It's absolutely horrifying. The baby feels pain.

She did that twice and the last one she flew out to another city as she was scared they would, catch on, and she was 25 weeks pregnant. And it was denied. And why she had to go back to her home town, to put it up for adoption and she lied on that application, have you adopted out before .. no. And this is what caused her down fall. It’s when they found out a baby was missing. I agree these late term abortion are usually only done because the moms life or the baby’s life is in danger. Not because you waited too long.

She can never admit the truth. She probably still wants her parents’ approval and admitting the truth would mean she’s flawed . What a horrific situation.
