    It is such a daunting task as it is. So if she doesn't recycle, it's because of all the impurities of the state of the home. She is doing something even bigger than you or me. Cut her some slack. ❤ Barbie, you are my hero !!!

    Most of the jobs you do for free are massive jobs that most people wouldn't even do for lots of money. I don't think the average person really understands the extremely unsanitary and sometimes dangerous conditions you are dealing with, if they did, they wouldn't give you a hard time about whether you recycle or not

    @@leeheongow8014 It's the same thing where I live. You must wash & dry the cups (or whatever you're trying to recycle) before throwing it in the trash. YES, they separate the garbage from the recycling at the dump. So, once you've taken the time & effort to clean the items, you mix it right back in with the rest of your trash. I still have a separate can for garbage & my clean recycling & bag it up separately. I'm trying!

    @@teresaellis895 Yeah, in most place they put a really large container of recylables through a scanner and if it finds anything nonrecylcable (a bit of peanut butter on the side of a jar, a cap that isn't recylable when the bottle is, etc) they just throw the entire container away. She'd probably make things worse by trying to recycle because there's no way the recyclables are clean and cleaning them would waste her time (and use soap and water which might make it not even environmentally worth it). I hope she doesn't feel too pressured, it's silly to talk about recycling from homes where concerns include zika from mouse droppings.

    My sister who lives with my mom, would’ve saved every one of those plastic containers. They both have hoarding tendencies. We have to go over there every couple of months and throw away garbage they both collect. One month I went over and found empty water bottles stashed EVERYWHERE! I’m guessing at least 100. They hoard food until it goes bad. And she brings it to my house after it’s bad thinking we want to eat or give it to our dog. She just can’t throw it away. It’s a mental condition that’s very hard to cure. We just try and stay on top of it so their house doesn’t get bad. That’s one reason I watch Barbie. She’s so understanding and doesn’t judge anyone. She just tries to help. Thank you!

    People assume ADHD is the inability to focus on anything but so often people have SUPER focusing powers and are amazingly great at something, but that hyper focus makes it impossible to see other things that are happening (like dirt and mess accumulating). Thanks for bringing that out.

  • @d.k.s.4057

    @d.k.s.4057

    The hyper-focus ability of ADD/ADHD people is a real thing and yet it can be exhausting physically and mentally. Most people cannot keep it going for too long as it can precipitate a sort of collapse. Unfortunately, many neurotypical people see the hyper-focus and expect that the person can do this at will. Not true: it depends upon stamina and physical requirements, health status, age and experience of the individual. Many learn to do it for employment purposes but are too tired to be effective at home. Compassion is appropriate. What was the saying about not judging someone until you have walked a mile in his shoes? Try ADD/ADHD shoes on for size and perspective. Barbie has it!

To any fellow ADHDers, I cannot recommend this method enough: tidy and/or clean one little thing at a time, every day, through the entire day as you see it. Sandwich it between other activities so it doesn’t feel like such a chore. Or set a five minute timer and do as much as you can in one room. It’s amazing how much of a difference it can make for our peace.

    Thanks for bringing this up, most people don't realize this stuff gets shipped to Asia to be "processed" with little to no EPA-ish standards, shipped back to the US, then probably shipped back to China for manufacturing, then shipped back to the US again so people can "feel good" about buying an expensive bowl made from recycled plastic so they can eat their out of season fruit shipped from Chile. Ships burn 80ish tons of fuel a day. Who knows what energy is being used in China. It's not "eco friendly"

You are supposed to clean out all food and residue before you recycle, technically, and thats WAY too much extra work for her. I wonder if the apartment managers knew what a big problem garbage was in their buildings and how it's causing cockroach and mice infestation, if they would be more likely to implement a garbage program? I lived in an apartment building once where they automatically added a fee to my rent so I could place my garbage outside the front door one day each week and they picked it up. It was very convenient. I think it would really help these people get rid of the mess without having to go down to the dumpsters. If not, perhaps the tenants could consider advertising near the mailboxes to see if a teen or preteen would be willing to earn money each week to pick up their garbage for them? It seems to be a big part of the issue in these apartments.

    I'm really glad the person who lives here has their meds again, so many unfinished tasks, so much self medicating with caffeine, it's a classic! This must have been such a relief. Ehere I live they can only accept clean items for recycling- so even these cups which don't look to bad would have all had to be washed out. In my homes you clean its not even feasible to THINK about recycling! Contaminated items would just cause hassle at the recycling plant.

    Yes, I've heard the same. I have been recycling, neighbor quit recycling and said, we go to the trouble to rinse, sort and put two different bins out and the truck picks them both up and dumps them in the same place. So they quit recycling. Also heard the bottle caps and bottles if on, they throw that bottle away. You have to separate the caps because different plastics, until the bottle makers get on board with a material for cap they can use.

    I think now they say it's closer to 20%. Ppl have no idea what gets thrown in landfills. My husband use to pick up the dumpsters at a major home improvement store chain and I was astonished at the still new in packaging items that were headed to the landfill. My husband saved things that were on top. He didn't "dumpster dive". Worry about recycling some plastic cups is very miniscule.

    My local recycling service only wants clean plastics, glass, aluminum, and cardboard. So pizza boxes and dirty plastic aren’t wanted. Which is a shame. I wash what I can. Sell what I can(not getting my nickel back on the containers for sure). If you have composting in your area, that where dirty food soiled cardboard and cardboard milk cartons can be recycled.
