From brain to consciousness: Steven Laureys at TEDxBrussels

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Consciousness is not an "it". Consciousness is that by which all "its" are experienced. It will continue to defy quantification. But, ironically, it is what we, at root, are. We are not conscious. We ARE consciousness.

From conscious to brain. Studying brain activity is not studying consciousness itself, rather it is studying the result of consciousness- because studying requires consciousness.

Meaning and purpose to life are emergent properties. We give our own lives meaning/purpose, or we inherit them when we are born. There is no divine agency which imposes meaning/purpose to our lives. Furthermore, step back for a moment and reflect: why is meaning so important anyway? What is wrong with simply BEING?

It seems silly to me that there is such a fear that there is no life after death. It means that you should make the most of the time you have. Don't wait. Live life. Build a living legacy. Life is what you make of it not just wish it.

@@enkiepic432 He is a neurologist at the university hospital of Liège specialised in patients in coma, vegatative state, locked up syndrome, etc.. In other words those in a reduced conciousness state. He was also one of the professors that helped cyclist Stig Broeckx recover from a bad accident that brought him in a vegetative state for months with a high loss in brain activity (be sure to look up his story) He is maybe not your person if you look at conciousness from a spiritual standpoint (altough he is a big proponent of mediation), but he is a great doctor in his field.

Lauren’s doesn’t have a clue. There is a spirit world and our consciousness and mind are completely separate from the brain and the body. And our spirit departs from our body and that’s why we can see everything going on in the operating room from our vantage point on the ceiling. Consciousness came first. Then the spirit world, then the physical world follows last.
