From 2019: Actor Tony Sirico Speaks On Auditioning For ‘The Sopranos’

On TODAY in January 2019, the cast of the HBO series “The Sopranos” gathered to reflect on the show’s 20th anniversary. Actor Tony Sirico spoke about when he auditioned for the role of “Junior" Soprano but creator David Chase instead gave Sirico the role of “Paulie Walnuts" Gualtieri.

I started watching The Sopranos for the first time about 2 and a half months ago. After watching every season, I started over at the very beginning. I watched all seasons again, and started over at the very beginning again, and am on season 3 right now. I haven't watched anything else. It's such an amazing show, and never gets boring for me. Paulie was my favorite character immediately. He just oozed charisma, and was born to play that role. It was like magic every time he came on. I told my mom a couple of weeks ago, to try watching it. Then the other day, I watched the pine barrens episode, and afterwards, I asked my mom if she's tried watching it yet, and she said no. I was just about to say to her "I bet when you do, Paulie will be your favorite character" and all of a sudden I saw a post he had just passed away. It was weird.

I know what you mean for sure, but unfortunately, he was at the age where things like alzheimer's and dementia begin to kick in... so for me it was Tony Sirico showing his age rather than something being up. It's definitely sad to see someone lose their memories and cognitive function. It's strange how these diseases hit some of our elders and not others. Tony was struggling, but Dominic Chianese and Jerry Adler were still sharp as tacks despite them both being older than him. David Proval, who played Richie Aprile, isn't in this interview, but I've seen interviews and he's still with it. Someone told me he and Sirico were the same age. At any rate, may Tony Sirico rest in peace. He lived a hard life, but you can tell in this clip how beloved he was to those who knew him.

In most peoples opinion. There was huge commercial success with stuff like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones etc. But Sopranos was the first series to ever break a BILLION dollars, and that was decades before streaming and digital renting etc. The producers of series like GOT and whatnot, they paid homage to Sopranos saying "In the business, there is an acronym. Is it BS, or is it AS?". In other words, did it come BEFORE Sopranos, or AFTER Sopranos. Cos The Sopranos changed everything, forever!

Yeah, he could in a lot of ways just play himself. The way he says 'pulling your pretzel' seems like it could be a delivery straight out of the sopranos. And he made a huge contribution to the script by acting as an advisor, pointing out things to Chase that would never actually happen in real life. Apparently a few of the stories he'd tell just off the cuff to the rest of the cast made it in as plot points or scenes, though I can't remember which interview I saw that in.

My favorite scene was where Paulie instructs the waiter at the Lobster Restraunt to hand over the check to Christopher as pay back for a previous Restraunt engagement. Paulie was generous in giving nearby patrons drinks and Christopher says you need glasses. Paulie glances at the check on the table and laughs $1184.00. I gotta play that number.
