Fun fact: James Gandolfini got a phone call in the middle of the night from a mob associate. The conversation was short and to the point. The mob guy said “we like what your doing. But a Don never wears shorts.” The line was worked into one of the episodes.

That was all fabrication. Michael has stated in pervious covers about the Sopranos that, that is not true and the Don or the boss can basically wear what he wants. And the original story was it was in a shop someone told James that.

They are tough as nails too. my girlfriend is of italian descent, her great grandma used to work in a factory; there was an accident one day, she lost her arm, acted like it was no big deal, never complained not even once. Incredible mental fortitude.

Gandolfini was not a mob guy at all. He was a college & professional theater actor, a hippie type. Like Billy Crudup, etc. that’s how brilliant his acting was. He drove that show like a real boss. As did David Chase

*Silvio was extremely loyal. He was Tony's best friend since childhood, he whacked out members that tried to plot against the boss with New York. He was a proud consigliere. He wasn't afraid of telling Tony what needed to be said and didn't think twice to do what needed to be done. That's EXACTLY what you want in an advisor.*

They filmed Bobby's death at a local store near my house on Long Island. If u go to Trainland in Lynbrook, there's a big sign outside saying "Sopranos episode 85 was filmed here, this is where Bobby got whacked". If u go inside, they have display cases with props, photos, autographs, and memobillia from the scene they filmed there and it's really cool to go through all that

Apparently Livia (Tony’s mom) is based on David chase’s own mother. I hear that from the cast reunion thing they did on the today show. Weirdly Steve Van Zandt said it wasn’t like an Italian mom at all and David Chase responded with “That is my mother”. Funny to see y’all had similar experiences

Michael, I had not seen The Sopranos until this past Thursday. I've been watching episodes back-to-back, a marathon. It's magnificent ! I completed the first season, thirteen episodes, over the last two days. It's so damned extraordinary that I can't stop watching it ! I laughed my ass off when Carmela said, "You know Tony, it's a multiple choice thing with you. I can't tell if you're old-fashioned, paranoid, or just a fucking asshole." All the best, Michael.

Call me a sadist or a schadenfreude lover but Tony's crazy, effed up marriage with Carmela was why I watched the show. It was great but at the same time, added some realism. In fact, one episode or two gathered a few Emmy nominations solely based on the Tony/Carmela conflicts.

My grandmother was "about to die" for about ten years! She managed to never be sent to a "retirement community" and passed away in her own bed. I sat beside her all through her last night, when she was unconscious. The last time we spoke was a week before that, when she called me on the phone and gave it to me "for not calling my father" more often! Livia and Junior remind me a lot of my grandparents. My grandad was not bitter and mean like Junior, he was always laughing and playing with us kids, but he wore the same glasses and bald head as Junior.

I think the idea of Tony seeing a psychiatrist was a mechanic that added to the tension and was compelling because we are all watching wondering how he is going to avoid telling anything that could be too revealing to that life. And then that became a big deal later with Braco’s character defending doctor-client privilege and how she was caught over her own loyalty to these two different groups. Also how these well educated psychiatrists and family were then seen to be arrogant and saw Tony’s case as an amusement to them, and we are left feeling more sympathy for Tony, or at least questioning: who are the good guys? Are we all just as bad,as flawed as each other or just the same, really?

Episode 1 was filmed in Elizabeth. Don't remember if episode 2 was. The pork store they used was a few blocks from my house in the real mob part of town. The restaurant explosion scene was right on Elizabeth Avenue.

I like Michael Franzese. He’s an old fashioned guy, very allegorical. He always seems like he’s at the precipice of an enormous crossroads, and he is very observant of the sacred and the propane.

Loved the show. It helped bring our jersey family closer together. We had big dinners on sundays and then watch new episodes together and get into a few pretty heated but productive discussions.

Honestly this show is so consistent. after season 1 you think, nothing will top this. after season 2, alright nothing will stop this! then season 3 and 4 are so fantastic but in some different aspects. and season 5 an 6 just set up the excellent finally. Powerful storytelling throughout and amazing in each season in their own rights and awesome characters carrying on through it all. I would love to know what friendships Michael had with anyone not part of the life like tony and Artie.

Silvio's loyalty is hard to explain. You never felt that he was extremely loyal to Tony, but then again he always acted properly , always earned , never did anything wrong . So yeah I'd probably agree. He probably was the most loyal

Silvio was a terrible actor and played the role horribly, like I said I don’t know if that was intended by chase or not, but luckily he was surrounded by great actors and everyone kinda just laughs it out or ignores his acting.

@Jay I never liked the character, they should of had someone else play that role. He couldn't capture the actual behavior of a mob guy if his life depended on it. Or even capture 10% of it, to each his own but to me Van zant should of not had that role.

The Sopranos is and was a dark comedy.

That was what got me started on the show. The first 5min of sopranos i ever saw was tony tries to do something nice for his ma, but she wont let him in the house. Pretends to not know who he is. And he just keeps trying. Pissed off, but keeps trying. I laughed for 5 minutes straight. I got more validation out of that one scene than anything else that was ever on tv.

Tony and Silvio had the best and most trustworthy relationship in that entire show now that I think about it, I remember only one instance where things got a little shaky and it was practically nothing.. but for the most part Tony had serious issues with every single player on his team (including his actual family). That just goes to show what kind of consigliere Silvio was. Those who want respect, give respect -Tony Soprano

You heard of the Chinese godfather? He made them an offer they couldn't understand. It's hard to believe some people haven't seen an episode of this show. The best way I can describe it is for each scene the ground was lucky enough to have straight magic happening on top of it. Seriously each scene is so close to day to day life.

Not ever seeing an episode was me, until recently. Someone gave me Season 1 on disk, and I took forever to actually watch it--ten years after Gandolfini's death. Some of us are content to remain behind the times, but at least I now understand what everyone has raved about.

Sopranos isn't just cloned. It in many ways freed up television plot structure on a whole. If you watch almost any series before the sopranos, they are so cookie cutter and similar. Post sopranos you had the clones, but also a lot of shows were given structural freedom. It really is amazing. Nerd out.

After Sopranos we got Six Feet Under, Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men, True Detective, Lost, etc. The only shows before Sopranos that you could give major props to are NYPD Blue, Twin Peaks, maybe you could say Twilight Zone, etc. But after the Sopranos we got so much amazing television content. It changed the way TV was perceived.

The Sopranos was AMAZING , its really nice but everybody watching it need to watch it at least to season 3 to get into the Story and understand all Characters...

1 of my all time favorite shows. I spent 2 years in Germany watching through several seasons, back on dvd I would buy them when our Base Exchange would get them in.

Best thing about the sopranos was they were just a dysfunctional family that happens to be apart of the mob. It was so much more than a mob show/movie. Great show of all time IMO.

I agree that the psychiatrist's presence was unrealistic, but her role in the story is a window into Tony's character. She is necessary as a literary device. If it were a book, instead of a TV series, she would likely not be in the story. In a book, you can read about a character's innermost thoughts (first person, omniscient, or 3rd person limited). In a movie, you can only develop a character by what he says, what he does, and what others say about him. Since it is television, we only know the thoughts he talks about, and he would only discuss his insecurities and vulnerabilities with a psychiatrist. He would not discuss any such thing with his fellow mobsters, or even his own family.

Even more so, if the show was narrated instead of him seeing someone to let the thoughts out, it would pull from the character of Tony. Chase could’ve written the show with the exclusion of Melfi in the regard that he was just narrating to an audience, but that is so unlike his character that it would seem unnatural. I don’t think Chase strived for it to be the most accurate depiction of a mafioso family, but with the inclusion of a psychiatrist, it helped ground Tony’s issues to where instead of speaking to the psychiatrist, you kind of feel like he’s talking to you about his issues, especially within the first season of the show.

Melfi represented the audience and the therapy sessions was Tony talking about his life directly to the audience, giving us insight on how he thinks during the scenes. Melfi’s therapist represents the creator, David Chase. Her therapy sessions represents the creator talking to the audience about how we perceive Tony and how we wanna glorify and see him succeed even tho he is so evil.

Initially yes during the run of the show the shrink played well, but in reruns or the box set I have, I fast forward through the shrink scenes. They didn't age well and become a distraction from the drama and comedy.

Especially for its time, The Sopranos has one of the most realistic depictions of therapy I've ever seen. It would've aged worse if Melfi wasn't perfectly professional, but she just did such a good job of being an extremely realistic psychiatrist.

The Sopranos, hands down, is my forever all time favorite show!

I miss listening to my Italian grandmother complain about the things you outlined. Perfect description. 👍❤️

We get a couple REALLY great episodes of Tony and the guys in Italy and I’d love to know michaels thoughts on that and learn more about joint ventures between the American and Italian mobs.

@@Dial999 agreed. Those were the first sopranos episodes I ever saw when I was 12 and it’s what got me hooked. There’s so much interesting and sometimes hilarious character work there, especially where paulie is concerned. Those r some of the most underrated episodes in the series imo.

The third through fifth season are my personal favorites. I would love for you to review an episode of the later seasons. I’m curious your opinion on Ralph Ciffereto.

Just got through binge-watching all six series. Not got a favourite line exactly, but love the scene with Phil Leotardo ruminating and the John Cooper Clarke "Chickentown" playing over this scene and the credits. Just after it went out on TV in England, I saw him (JCC) getting out of a car and going into our town hall in Bakewell, Derbyshire before doing a gig there, and I shouted "welcome to Chickentown" and he nodded and gave me a thumbs up! Great man!

What i love about Michael is he is straight as an arrow with his answer. Even though he couldn't get into the show properly after season 2 still realises it was a great show and gives the show a lot of credit. Also he done amazing going straight and getting out of the criminal underworld. I know a few old petty criminals and even with little crimes it's hard to go to an honest 9-5 life style. I never committed a crime but I see how friends struggle to leave there old ways. As its the only survival skills they know. So take my hat of to Michael he is a top man.

Personally, I've never seen characters that seemed so real. All of them played their parts amazingly well. So well that when I see any of them talking in real life I expect them to be their counterpart. Particularly Tony's ma, that woman absolutely knocked it outta park and into the lot next door. Also, Tony's dream sequences were on point as far as the ethereal quality of them.

The Sopranos for me is still the best god damn tv show ever made ! All characters we`re developed and interesting.And Gandolfini was just on another lvl !

I'd say "The Wire", but these things are personal. When Prime had them a few years ago I thought I'd watch them both through the way I did when they first ran, but I couldn't watch "The Sopranos" again. I watched a couple episodes, like Chris's seeing hell, but it was just too depressing. I watched "The Wire" again and enjoyed it as much, but couldn't do Tony and the crew again.

I started watching The Sopranos at the age of 10 with my older sister. We loved that show because Tony had similar traits to our father. Our father wasn’t a gangster nor a killer but my sister and I often joked how much better our lives would be if our father was more like Tony because his temper was nothing compared to our father

The funny thing is, The Sopranos is practically a Goodfellas reunion. Most of the actors from the Goodfellas ended up in the Sopranos. Now that there’s going to be a Sopranos prequel/spin-off movie it’s got Ray Liotta.
