There's a high end market for everything. Here, you're talking about a company that operates in California, making hand wired amps (very labor intensive) with top shelf components. Of course there is a markup, as they exist to make money as one of their primary reasons. You also have to consider, the market dictates pricing as well. If nobody paid $3,900 for this amp, Friedman would be forced to lower their prices to sell amps, or they would go under. If they're still here, it means people are buying them

I finally got a Friedman BE 100 & it can go from sparkly bright clean to super saturated, compressed, high gain metal with a smooth, high end. BE 100 covers multiple sounds and tones for me with its two channels, 3 modes (clean, BE, HBE) and a multitude of dip switches. However, the Butterslax just seems to do just one narrow spectrum of sound with its 3 dedicated channels: not very clean to really sharp, brash gain, to just too much gain. Yet, both amps cost exactly the same new: $4K each. Easy to see which is the better value.
