Freydis Moon faked being latinx and has 10+ fake identities: a deep dive into the messy book drama

Book twitter just found out that Freydis Moon has been masquerading as a latinx person while also having multiple aliases, including Taylor B. Barton/Taylor Brook/Brooklyn Ray: the white author that was blacklisted years ago for racism and bullying.

When I first fell into BookTube wit the Cait Corrain situation, I never thought drama would be a monthly/weekly thing. Always something new and chaotic proving that fact is always stranger than fiction.

Book drama has been a fairly regular thing for decades, I actually can't remember year after the internet got big that there hasn't been as least one scandal every two months or more. Often around race or gender, but plagiarism is another biggie. And lately AI, one sci-fi magazine nearly had to close submissions completely because they were overwhelmed with ChatGP submissions. Given that this publisher (Clark's World) had a particularly easy way to submit that was designed to make it easier for authors from developing nations to submit their work this was a huge problem last year in science fiction publishing. Clark has managed to overcome it, but other magazines are struggling with AI. That's just one example.

I have seen this stuff in the Read with Cindy video and this is wild. I am a latino (Brazilian) and I am white af, so this is like... If they were going to lie about being latine, why didn't they say they were a white latine? They couldn't even lie well. I am sure they didn't lie about being a white latine, because a lot of gringos simply don't understand the concept that Latines aren't a race, we are a group of nationalities that were colonized by Spain and Portugal.

As a queer latine who gets scraps when it comes to rep dealing with gender, religion and the diaspora I really connected with Freydis work. To say I was blindsided was an understatement. And by a white person? 🤡 like I have 4 of their books… Id barely been on social media this past year and bam this is what I’m confronted with the second I finally check back in LMAO

Bro seeing these Discord screenshots of people like Freydis Moon and Cait Corrain just cold bloodedly lying through their teeth about their entire identity, personality, and past for multiple whole ass conversations gives me so much anxiety. And it's the EXACT same tone and speech every time, with the same "omg wtf thats insane who would do something like that and screw me over so badly omg please don't hate me???" Bone chilling. I commend people for confronting both of these authors despite the fact that it must have felt so slimy to carry on a convo with someone being so manipulative and gaslighty. And also scary, given the freaky racism. Really sorry to everyone who was a fan of their books and/or looked up to them, you did not deserve this.

Wow!! Whats crazy is that initially Brooklyn Ray was masquerading as an afro latinx person i cant find it on GR but i know in late 2022 or 2023 when i first heard of their series it was because i was looking to read and support more latinx books. As a latina i feel like i was lacking in reading my own cultures stories so i went out to find authors that were writing fantasy and romance (there are great authors that are staples to all hispanics like Isabel Allende and Julia Alvarez but i wanted to find new emerging authors too) and darkling was recommended as diverse and brujo (witch). during this time i also read freydis moon for the same reason queer latinx rep in exodus 20:3 i would never critique someones experience because that is unique to each individual but looking back there were several things that i thought of as a yikes but let it go due to attributing it to the person maybe not being too in-touch with that part of their identity or culture (basically some of us get critiqued for being too american or not *insert country* enough) now i see why. This whole thing only really hurts us in the end. There are countries where we are not safe to come out or are in situations where we cant due to family. This debacle will only make people distrust the next latinx author that cant use their real names due to safety or whatever reason they deem important enough to not have to or want to use their real name.

While I can understand having a pen name that doesn't correspond to your real ethnicity (which, I understand, is controversial), it's the deliberate lying that crosses the line, at least for me. I've noticed more French and Spanish-sounding pen names for romance books, but to my knowledge, the real writers don't lie about their experiences as a race or culture they're not. Former Cracked writer and author of "John Dies at the End" David Wong is not Asian (he's White, that is a pen name), but he's also never lied about having experiences as an Asian man or taken opportunities away from actual Asian people. All she had to do was not lie and say, "It's a pen name that may or may not reflect what I am as a person." It's not hard!

This drama is wild! I bought one of Freydis’s books last year because I was specifically looking for a queer Latinx author to support and it was highly recommended, and I really liked it!
