Yes! I just discovered through this video that I apply makeup in French style lol. The only difference is I use a soft brown liner rather than black (black is too harsh on me), and lower lashes get mascara only at the outer edge--not all the way across, because it creates shadows & darkness under the eyes---not good for older women.

I live in America. I agree with you. I can't stand this "modern American technique". The French women know what a sexy woman is...classic, effortless, less is more, enhance one's own real beauty, and not plaster on layers of makeup until you have an unrecognizable mask on. 😑 Vintage American beauty was the way the French still do their makeup.

As a young French woman raised by a parisian fashionista, i can tell you that my mother always told me to use makeup to enhance my beauty not to hide it. To not use use too much coverage on my skin because my skin look human not perfect and a pimple and texture would never ruin my beauty. To learn how to enhance my eyes ( i have hooded eyes unlike the rest of my family and they always been a complex of mine ) and not to change their natural shape. Use makeup juste to show the beauty of your natural features not to change your face, you are already gorgeous, use makeup to let the world see your beautiful face and to gain confidence not to look like a different person.

I prefer the French style because it’s an enhancement rather than a mask. Your face moves naturally and has become one with the makeup. It’s also a classic style that will never go out of fashion. I would perhaps take a few of the American products and apply them very minimally such as a very soft blush or the lightest bit of neutral shimmer on the eyes for special occasions. I also have to have both my reds and my nudes lipsticks! 💄💋

They just need warm water and a bit of pressure on your lashes and the little tubes slide right off your lashes with no remover, cotton pads or tugging on the skin of your eyes. When I switched to it years ago I have never gone back. I use Blinc, but there are now numerous companies that are making it. Also, my skin isn’t quite good enough to go with a corrector and concealer, but I’m getting there! They’re all gone now, but I remember when my grandmothers and my Mom only used powder, lipstick, and a dab of that lipstick on their cheeks for blush. And if short on time, always lipstick! 💄

Americans should have more national pride on such matters. The lady was not fair, you shouldn’t clap her. -I speak both French and English and I’m not American or French and I don’t live in US or France. US might be the only country where French women are known for beauty or beauty skills. I don’t know how come ALL French women use a high end brand like Guerlain all the time? The lady literally was not fair. American hair & American makup is M U C H better than French makeup & hair. Can’t tell the same for fashion sense & fragrances though. But for beauty? Deffo American. PS. I often think that French women invest in fashion & fragrances so much because they’re not much blessed with natural beauty and good makeuo skills. I was very into France during the years of learnibg French, nonse of this lady’s claims are accurate. She only speaks for top class French women. But she unfairly compares top class French to Kardashians who represent more of a ghetto, lower-mid class Americans or just teenager girls. I always found Manhattan women very classy, independent looking, chic. Comparison was so so so unfair.

The Kardashians had a major influence, but American makeup culture isn't defined by theirs or any one single aesthetic. Makeup is big business in the US and there's both a positive and negative side to it. The negative, of course, is pressure placed on people (mainly women) to look "flawless" and reach some unattainable standard. The positive side is a fun celebration of makeup as an outlet for creativity. Let's stop acting like any one philosophy on makeup is better than another.

@@theprousteffect9717 Guess you missed my point. You should read again to see my emphasis. French people often sell the image of perfect, fashionable, elite, luxurious, expensive image of France and French but reality is drastically different. Paris is a filthy and unsafe city and Parisians.. Well, you should see them yourself. The rest of France is much better than Paris. The lady (She’s a proud Parisian from Romania) literally said “All French women use this” for Guerlain bronzer 🤣 And portrayed Kardashian makeup (Which I don’t like. I think Kardashian fashion is subculture) to represent American, top tier French makeup as French. Suspicious. Especially when elite & rich of France often prefer US to live instead of France.

I'm from the US, and I personally strongly dislike our way of applying makeup nowadays. I used to apply makeup that way when I was in high school, but it is atrocious. It is basically a mask to cover up your real face and change your features, and it takes forever. I've obviously stopped and started applying makeup the French way, and yes, its simple, but absolutely beautiful... timeless even.

This was fun. As I age, I pull from both styles. Less obvious foundation is a better look for aging skin, yet it’s useful to cover veins or unsightly dark patches. Winged eyeliner can appear harsh, if applied heavily, but can “lift” the eye. Same for contouring the cheekbones. I also find that a nude lip can be youthful- especially those colors that make teeth appear whiter, yet a red lip is a classic look that is great for evening. I completely agree that if you’re going to do a bold red lip, you should go lighter on the eye shadow, and maybe also lighter with the liner. Thank you for not shaming either style.

She was teaching the industry about elegance, women empowerment, better aging, and real beauty. What you said is quite true! Magnify the nature gave you, #1 rule Eyes or Lips etc. Thank you! (I'll put sunscreen and be careful with my liner 😉) Coco Chanel said "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance." and "Fashion changes, but style endures." If you ever find you to old to be pretty remember what she said : "You can be gorgeous at thirty, charming at forty, and irresistible for the rest of your life." 😘

When I completed aesthetics training in the 2000s they hammered home that contour is for photo shoots ONLY. While being ultra nice, you hammered the concept home - the American side will make you look flawless in every *photo.* Yes - because that quantity of makeup is designed for theater, film, and photo shoots! I understand why it's popular - when everyone lives and connects and expresses themselves via social media and photographs, *of course* they'd want to look good in pictures. But I vastly prefer what you called the French look. It feels more honest and looks much more natural in person. Plus it takes so much less time to apply - I've got stuff to do!

Agreed. The French side is where I am gravitating more these days too, as I dive deeper into my 50s. As much as it bums me out, the cat-eye/ wing thing looks silly on me. I have watched videos on applying cat-eye when one is older, and it worked for about 5 years, but not any more. I am pretty sure a makeup artist might still accomplish the look for me, but it looks atrocious when I try it (and it's turned from a fun play with makeup into a real chore). The only scenarios I could see it still work (possibly) would be in low-light situations or events such as going to the theater, nightclub, or if I were to ever play in bands again. I still LOVE eye junk, but as my eyes age, they are more deep-set and my lids drooping (unevenly at that!). So aside from the more "French" approach, I go the smoky route. For daytime, I use a neutral warm brown smoky eye. With my deeper-set eyes, I avoid any dark colors directly on the lids, but I do apply right along the lash-line and blend up from there into a very neutral lid color, or even a slight highlight/ shimmer. Smoky eye, I find, can actually range from muted to quite dramatic, so that's my new play-zone.

@@keikofay9804 I hear ya re the cat eye! O used to love it in my 40s but my eyes have changed so much that it's too difficult to get right. I use a dark wine and eggplant colored eye liner pencils that highlight my eye color and dark brown mascara ( like I used in high school!) Black mascars just does not look good anymore on me. Makes me look like I'm pissed off :-D We have to adjust all the makeup as we get older and everything changes--hair color and texture. Skin color and texture. I always wore red lipstick. But I find now it works best only on occasion with thr barest eye makeup. The rest of the time I use a neutral nude. Charlotte Tilbury "Pillow Talk" works great for me, and I add a little colored lip balm to change it up a bit. Or just go with the lip balm. I still use a liner -- Huda Beauty's Venus is a great neutral color -- because I dont like the ball smearing or bleeding. Plus it makes it easier to add a little shape to my ever thinning upper lip. (I now have the British "stiff upper lip :-D) I love to play with color and miss all the lipstick and eyeshadow, but take that color skill and use it other places rather than my face.

I never realized there was such a difference even in the west. I'm from Japan and make up here is _very_ different from French and American. When you say that with the French, a good mascara and black eyeshadow/liner is the staple, here in Japan colored eyeshadow (usually brown/pink/orange), eyebrow mascara, and lipstick (light pink/beige/orange/brown red colors) are the staples! There's also a hugee trend for emphasizing your under eye by using lightly colored pink or red eyeliner to create a shadow under your eye bags. They like the full look it gives to the eyes!

I have big, wide eyes, so it would look weird on me, but I think that’s the point, you should adapt all of these techniques to what suits you. I haven't seen it in everyday makeup though. I think it also depends on the city you live in. NY or LA are much more glamorous, but if you move away from big cities, classic and simple styles (like the french one) tend to show more. In my case, I use a mix of both, but as I have a white-latina skin I tend to prefer Mac or Bobbi Brown on me because of the warm undertone they have. Amazing video! :)

For me it's the technique I appreciate in American make up. I don't wear much but learning to properly prep the skin, place make up in a way that accentuates my face and eye shape, and flawless look when you do want to go all glam. Technique is advanced and ahead of it's time here in the US even if you don't like the all glam look. I would never use eyeshadow without primer and using my fingers for foundation looks bad in person. The advanced techniques can still be used for minimalist make up.

The one thing that really struck me - almost culture shock (I'm from North America) when I visited Paris in 2016 was that the women all had lovely hair and natural looking makeup. They also dressed nicely. No overdrawn clown lips, Amy Winehouse flick, no messy buns, or unkept look at all (no sweats or ripped pants). The women all looked very fashionable and not like they were street walkers. I found the same thing all over Europe, in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, etc. The women looked gorgeous and fashionable. My sweats are limited to my home and my ripped pants to my gardening. Many North American women don't realize how to emphasize their beauty rather than covering it up in a caricature.

But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! Thank you for this tutorial. I am American, and I feel disconnected from the makeup styles that I've seen for over a decade or more (basically since the Kardashians started to heavily influence makeup over here). When I watch makeup tutorials, all I think is how I know I won't do any of the techniques or buy any of the products mentioned. I didn't realize that I was naturally doing something closer to a French style of makeup -- including using my fingers instead of brushes. I will look for French inspired makeup tutorials.

Yeah, exactly. I look around in the US a lot. In the 28 states I've visited and the 2 of my citizenship FL and CA. Most women just don't wear make up, or they wear such a light make up that you can't tell they are wearing anything at all. In CA, I see people wear the Kardashian look when they are taking selfies or might be posted on the internet. There's a false internet look. Walking around, it's a messy and natural look or a casual and natural look that I see the most.

i feel like the French side is kinda like the lazy side. Not that I'm calling the French lazy. Or maybe it could be compared to the 90s? Just way less product overall, makeup as enhancement not total transformation. i feel like digital culture has produced really alienating online trends where literally everything looks so artificial. I've never been amazing with applying makeup but i just find those scenarios where someone looks totally unlike themselves uncanny, like even if it's an improvement, it feels like it would be too hard to take your makeup off without people doing a massive double take. i just like it if makeup is fun and a bit of a pick me up and a compliment to one's own style. For me in the thumbnail what's weirding me out is that the eyes look like they're totally different sizes. I think both sides look good, the American side looks more glam, with a bigger and more laboriously detailed eye and deeper cheek contour. But the French side perhaps looks closer to the natural face? And there's something to be said for that. These days I wouldn't glam up like the right unless i was going to an event. i think for me the fun of makeup gets taken out of it if it takes too long to put on and maintain, and i live in a hot climate where things melt easily. But i guess if you were really good at slapping on the glam, maybe you'd think less of using it for the everyday. For me the side on the right is just not an everyday daytime look. Not because it looks bad, it's just too much, daytime is more casual and the light is more intense, whereas lower light environments favour bolder looks to stand out.

As an American I would say this video is very accurate! I laughed when you applied the bronzer at the end- because you can't forget that! Of all things! ;) This is actually very comforting to me, because growing up my mother's generation didn't use a lot of makeup. I taught myself through KZread videos, and since I was on the dance team I learned further how to do my hair, eye shadow, eyeliner, fake eyelashes, lipstick, and had a lot of practice! The American makeup style is just that- it's very heavy, like costume and performance makeup. I have sensitive skin and have always preferred to use less, but was under the impression I was doing it wrong if I didn't apply the full face. I love the French concept that you have a statement lip OR eye, but not both. Here in America, if you put on eyeshadow it is an automatic requirement you add eyeliner, as well as a lip color. And bronzer! Always bronzer! I think it can be said the French culture is much healthier than American in terms of insecurities and body image (maybe?), since you mentioned they enjoy seeing their own faces in the mirror! Thank you for bringing to my attention there is not a "wrong way." Lovely video, thank you!

@@5DNRG Honnestly you don't really see strong makeup especially lips during the day. For those who do wear makeup (because many don't) it's usually light makeup during the day (eyes and lips). And if there is make-up in the evening it would be strong lips with light eyes or light eye makeup look with strong lips or again light eyes with light makeup or even no makeup at all. Many French women always wear light makeup wether it is day or night. Now the younger generations 18-25 is different as they are more influenced by the new social-media trends. Obviously not everyone is like this but it describes the vast majority of women that you can easily see at work or on the subway when going out or at work or when spending time in a mall.

The high fashion make-up look (ie. the french makeup style), embraces minimalist beauty. The Instagram make-up look is very popular and trendy, and thankfully, it depends on what you're use to (ie. what has influenced you during your teen years, and early adulthood) in terms of enhancing one's beauty, thus women have options. I must agree that the Photo ready/Photo Shoot makeup is perfect for the camera. Thank You for showing the contrast in make-up looks. But then American influence: I love highlighter, a winged eyeliner moment, and I'll use bronzer but almost as a contour at some points, and i always wear SPF) So I use some American products and techniques, but with the French natural aesthetic of subtle slapped on and a focus on enhancing beauty over hiding flaws. As a makeup loving American Latina, I think it’ comes down to age in the US. The younger ladies in their 20s are definitely more into your version of American makeup. And it’s mostly to go out and not everyday. I’m in my 30s and what I see from my peers (30s & 40s) is more of a merge between both of your looks. Mostly the French side since we are on the go with kids and life. And my mothers generation is definitely the French side, with the exception that they don’t use bronzer but do use blush. But overall in the US, for the most part if you remove social media what you’ll see is more of the no make up makeup look. I am Latina so I do go all out for an event.
