Man. Can't wait too get out of the ratrace, retire and play video games. Only 30+ years to go! Nah, my wife will drive me mad any time soon.

20 years and no other game delivers quite the same feelings as Freelancer. But luckily, the fan community (or should I say communities?) keeps the game alive and the servers running. You can hop back into playing the game within about 10 minutes, or experience it for the first time if you've missed out on this game for all these years!

I find it strange that all these years and there is no true successor to this masterpiece. Yes, there is the promise of a successor (if its not mired by greed). Makes you appreciate the geniuses behind this game so much more.

@@kindledashling3610 Freelancer is a fairly star-studded, high production, space fighter game. It came out during a time when the market for space sims was still pretty popular (Wing Commander, Homeworld, Rogue Squadron) but was starting to wane. I don't think you'll find another like it for that reason; no major studio is going to attempt such a game any longer. Starfield might be the closest, if you ignore the focus on planet exploration. The closest real successor is probably X3. While it doesn't have RPG elements or a story (worth mentioning), all of the mechanics are there and fleshed out. Personally I've found the X-series to be closer to what I was looking for, myself. It's also programmable enough that Freelancer could likely be modded into X3 or X4.

The first game I ever played... now 67 years old I am still playing it. Love the Discovery Community.

That Neumann guy sounds like a rheinland character in storyline that escort us through rheinland in main storyline.

A game that I always find myself replaying every 2 to 3 years.

I can't seem to remember the countless times I've played Freelancer and it was the best space rts games of it's time and the no story is ever the same. In fact, that's one Freelancer's best qualities, you have the freedom to make what experience you have playing this game your own. Your choices define what outcome you'll face in the end.

And yet in 2003 it was a financial "failure" . 21 years latter no one remembers the "hits" of 2003... While Freelancer still rules !

I mean, lots of people remember doom 3, vice city, wind waker, dbz budokai, KOTOR, viewtiful joe, sands of time, beyond good and evil, those years were just chock full of classics

@@DarkElfDiva I remember Starlancer, with many mods also, but it wasn't my beef, so to speak. It was "pushed aside" by Earth é Beyond, Early good times of EVE-online and: FREELANCER ! Edit: However, Starlancer was amazing for its time. Great Game History !

freelancer a game that has always been stuck in a special place in my hart i wished they picked up the IP again and made a new one , still got so many fond memories of the game and the discovery comunity , its been years ago i played discovery

Superb game. Honestly with a couple of tweeks it would do very well even today. Hope we get another one some day!

It's called Star Citizen...same creators...everything Freelancer was and waaaay more...unfortunately Microsoft owns Freelancer, Chris Roberts had to sell Digital anvil to them and the rights to the game just to finish it the way it was...it was supposed to have land mission and some other stuff...

Easily the best spaceship game I've ever seen or played.

Anyone else get really excited when they first clicked on this? Still awesome, don't get me wrong. Just saying...

Need a Remake in U5 engine and a sequel.

A some kind of the sequel is in development, actually. Check the "Freelancer: The Nomad Legacy" mod.

I LOVE FREELANCER. A REMAKE would be fun. And something based on the Classic. I hope they don´t forget the STORY as in the old one, to me a major reason to buy it if they do it right. That one had been as epochal as in MASS EFFECT 6;07 -As someone loving the keyboard and mouth controls FREELNACER WAS MY GAME!! I also think you can see what a nimbus this game has by the many imitating titles like DARK STAR ONE or CHORUS and now UNDERSPACE for example.

I love freelancer my man. It hits hard, It comes back to my nostalgia. I was thinking about NPC Wingman for that.

I remember this! The only downside of the game was that space was flat.

Still one the top 10 space games.

@@winni2701 kept exceeding the budget and release date with feature creep, the game was originally slated for 2001, and with how fast tech was moving then it appeared quite dated already in 2003, because of the delays, dated appearanced and overbudget it flopped and more or less made space sims toxic to publishers after that, effectively killing the genre

Great game. Loved it.

i think i still have a copy of the original.. made into ISO... a relative of mine.. showed it to me in 2007.. and i played it and kept it in my game collection... just checked it.. Yes.. still have it.

It'll never not be funny to me how this 21 year old game beats Starfield on the Open World Space RPG front, by a HUGE margin

Very good game with only one gripe from me. The story is short, and once you finish it the universe kind of loses its feeling of expansive and feels...empty. I would love a game like this that has more expansive story and more unique things to do.

Where can i get the remake?

Any way to get it to run on windows 11?

There's an installation link in the video description, but if you want to check out the original campaign before trying any other expansion mods, I'd recommend the Freelancer HD Edition mod.

You can hear the laugh of Chris roberts between 0:54 and 0:55 (and i think you can see him in blue shirt in front of the white board)

its going to be a hard sell though... there are other games that already does what freelancer is trying to do... now it has to be a phenomenal story to beat the others

You do realise that most concepts in Freelancer are expanded in Star Citizen.. or will b at som e point Hard to describe but Seeing how Star Citizen is developed I see many things from freelancer in it.. like it had the same game designer behind both titles

@@ZeratKJ The art design of Freelancer is much more imaginative and inspiring than what seems to be a very generic, standardized look of Star Citizen. Each House in Freelancer has a unique visual design, yet the entire art direction still has a cohesive appearance.

This game needs a remaster.

I thought i was actually going to be an upgrade not a graphic up date to 2k. Would much rather a Freelancer 3.
