    In the film industry the Job is called Highspeed Operator. The Demand is already there. Get to know industry standard cameras like the phantom high-speed cameras. It really helps to be on film sets in generell. Get to know work flows in the camera department, since these are the same Workflows on high paid commercials. Work as AC and get to know camera accessories (maybe even work in a movie rental) and you’ll be able to specialise in commercial work and being a highspeed Operator. :)

    5120x2880@600fps and open gate @360fps seem like essentially the perfect use cases for this camera. You get the full width of the sensor at anywhere from 25x (24fps) to 10x (60fps) slow-mo with a global shutter and pretty damn good dynamic range. Basketball/football/baseball slow-mo shots, anyone?

    I think a really easy way Freefly could differentiate themselves from the market would be to include a log profile. Right now, by virtue of only supporting HLG and Rec709 profiles, it can't really be well-supported by any color management pipeline. When I've emailed their support team, they didn't seem to understand the value of a log profile even though it's just as easy for them to implement as any other in-camera picture profile, and would enable a lot of high end workflows with this camera. Hell, Phantom RAW's color management support is broken in Resolve and has some tone mapping built in. Freefly could literally outperform their only competitor in this aspect and it's just a firmware adjustment.

  • @thatcherfreeman

    Tbh the argument that they can't design a log profile that has the right noise levels for them is bogus. I'll happily design their log profile for free if they want.

    If you put your project framerate to 50p, the HDMI can not output 50p? How about sensitivity of the sensor: with the same lux, does the ember at 400 ISO and the Raptor at 800 ISO have the same T-stop on the lens to expose for middle gray?

    I've been dying to test out this camera. The footage looks really great overall! With such low ISO options, did you guys even need to use ND filters when shooting outside? I imagine in a studio setting you need to throw ridiculous amounts of light at this sensor, and no chance in hell that it is usable in any low light environment. Also did you mess around with the shutter angle? I assume the 180 rule doesn't really apply here since you aren't going to want any sort of motion blur in super slow motion footage.

  • @thatcherfreeman

    @thatcherfreeman

    8 ай бұрын

    You may still want motion blur in slow motion footage, otherwise fast moving objects will still stutter across the screen when slowed down to 24fps.

  • @DynamicPhil84

    @DynamicPhil84

    @@thatcherfreeman Interesting, I hadn't thought of it from that angle. But you're right, I have seen slow motion footage that seemed to stutter, and maybe this is why.

  • @thatcherfreeman

    @thatcherfreeman

    8 ай бұрын

    @@DynamicPhil84 There is one thing to watch out for, which is that if some footage is shot at say, 1200fps, but the editor decided later that 240fps was sufficient, then they'll effectively be slowing down the clips by 10x instead of the 50x that's possible with the footage. Depending on the retiming algorithm used, they may just be dropping all frames except for every fifth frame, which would give the appearance of footage taken with a 72 degree shutter angle or less. One alternative I'm experimenting with, if you're not sure what speed you want to play back the footage but can shoot very high framerates and have cheap storage, is that you could shoot at a 360 degree shutter at a high speed. Then, if you later want to play it back faster, you can blend and drop an appropriate number of frames and simulate a variety of shutter speeds so it's not choppy.

    hear me out: dual sensor design for slowmo cams. Minolta already made a dual sensor cam and multi sensor cameras were also a thing beack in the days. Maybe the time has come for revisiting old tech like this. You can either use two identical sensors and use median mixing methods to cut down the noise so much that the shadows get more usable or a second version with an nd to create a hdr image or at least to make up for the loss of dynamic range ...

    There's probably great value in using the two sensors to make an HDR composite and extending the dynamic range, but taking the mean between two equal ISO images might not lower the noise significantly. That's because you're sending half the light to each sensor, which will increase noise by one stop and then taking the mean will bring you back to the original noise levels as if you had one sensor.

  • 8 ай бұрын

    @@thatcherfreeman like i said it is a either or situation, either expanding the dynamic range by creating an hdr composite or by doubling the the signal and use the mix of both signals to reduce the noise, this can also expand the dynamic range slightly because less noise means more usable underexposed stops
