Great video Michael! May be worth mentioning that this only works with BRAW, and having tested on my side, I also encountered the same awkward results you had after processing a shot and it still looks like vertical lines are tilted from the rolling shutter - turns out that's actually from the camera itself being tilted on its roll axis when you did the erratic movements (you can actually see it in the gyro data graph). Should you try that test again with the camera on a tripod you'll see the RS correction works very well 🙂 The other good news is that it also works very well with anamorphic lenses (albeit you need to calculate a corrected lens data to input for it to work), which really gave me hope to going back to this camera for anamorphics

Yeah! Figured the issue was my crazy hand movements haha a tripod would have made it more scientific. My 3am brain wasn’t thinking properly I guess 😅

Michael, this was gone over in detail recently in a CVP review if the new Cinema Camera, and it had a bunch of footage examples.

Gyrodata stabilisation is not the same as rolling shutter compensation

So what part of setting Gryo to zero strength was well known. Why do people always miss half of what’s said? Do you people really pay attention? This isn’t about gyro stabilization

Yeah Michael did a video about that when the gyro update was released. The excitement and confusion here is that rolling shutter was remedied by that update, but not explicitly described by bmd as something that would remedy rolling shutter. Rolling shutter is not even addressed in the patch notes. Meanwhile, people are ALWAYS complaining about rolling shutter these days (because we’ve run out of things to complain about I think), and this was apparently an obscure fix the whole time. Wild…

In the original video by diode it zooms quite a bit but if you shoot 6k with room you could accommodate for this. However a better solution may be after effects rolling shutter repair which fixes it without any zoom, somehow. Fusion doesn’t seem to have an effect like this strangely.

You might also want to mention that you don't get gyro data recorded if you're using a lens with stabilization and it's turned on.

Ah, yes, as a SteadXP user for years, I was in the forums pushing for them to add both gyro stabilization and angle shift rolling shutter compensation. Just to be aware it can't fix rolling sutter on moving objects within a static frame, or at least not without a little AI/ neural engine involvement. For what it's worth one could also technically get near perfect post motion blur from the gyro data as well if they wanted to implement it; however, I'm not sure if Blackmagic uses the gyro data along with the pixel data for the Davinci motion blur motion vectors, but if they did, then using a lower shutter angle to compensate for the hand held micro jitter moment, which typically destroys the 180 degree shutter, could be returned to a 180 degree shutter fairly easily in post.

  • @billyoung9538

@@G_handle I'll try and explain the theory to save you the trouble. If one knows the focal length and sensor size of the camera in conjunction with the relative position of the camera then there are techniques that can be used to figure out the relative distance to objects and create depth maps. (edited additional note on this to calculate a fairly accurate depth map one needs a few frames of objects offset from one another, and that happens a lot with video footage) DaVinci Resolve can already do the depth maps to a reasonable degree. The motion blur is a combination of the physical object movement from frame to frame in addition to the relative camera movement from frame to frame. We know both with gyro, lens & sensor data, and unlike simulated depth of field (aka what iphones can do) motion blur blends uniformly in botth directions meaning there is no hard pixelated edge like with depth of field. AKA we can literally calculate near perfect motion blur in post thanks to gyro data. To nip a related question in the butt ahead of time. Yes, one can do motion vector motion blur already inside Davinci Resolve on the color page, but I don't believe they've added the gyro data into the calculation as of yet, but I don't see why they couldn't.

@@billyoung9538 yeah there are a few things they could do with gyro which they don't - seems like it would be possible to do handheld sky replacement from the gyro data - since it's far enough away for position not to matter? There was someone on the BM forums asking about getting gyro data into Blender, but no idea if they got anywhere with it

The ability to not only stabilize a shot from a BM camera but reduce rolling shutter is an amazing find. Having had the BMPCC4K, I know how much I miss working with BRAW. Now, I know the word "cinematic" is thrown around a lot these days. But, to me, the BRAW footage coming straight out of a BM camera has a very cinematic look. Color wise especially. This discovery has caused me to reconsider BM camera again. Why BM hasn't called out this feature is truly baffling.

Wait…. If the camera can shoot at faster frame rates than it must be able to record pixels on the censor faster. In that case BMD could create a preset that films at a faster frame rate and then downsamples to 24. Rolling shutter gone, the files will just initially take up more space and have less motion blur. You could do this manually by filming at a speed that’s a multiple of 24 like 48 and then speeding the resulting footage back up to 24. Then you could add motion blur with an effect if you want. This is based on the assumption that the camera doesn’t time scale up the sensor pixel sweep in slow mo mode. Because why would they do that? I’m going to do a bunch of tests with my 6K G2.

Very important to realize that this doesn't fix rolling shutter issues that are caused by something else than the movement of the camera. So for example if you point the camera out of the window of a moving car the lamp posts will still be warped! Point the camera at the propellor of an airplane and it will still be totally warped. YT'ers try to bring this a magic trick to turn this camera into a GS camera, but it's simply not.
