Free Range Sailing teach us how to LIVE OFF THE OCEAN in remote Western Australia - Ep 115
When Finn suddenly arrived on the boat several episodes ago we jumped forward 4000 nautical miles with our vlog updates and have bumped in to a few big sailing channels along the way. Although we are presently buddy boating with the intrepid sailing Zatara, we had the good fortune to meet and make friends with Troy and Pascale from Free Range Sailing when we were all tied up one boat after the other at the well appointed Freemantle Sailing Club Marina.
Troy and Pascale had just completed their circumnavigation of Australia beating us across the Great Australian Bight by a matter of weeks.
We caught up with them again in the beautiful remote Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Geraldton where they taught us the art of Lobster catching and spearfishing.
When Troy showed us how to prepare lobster tails it gave Rob a chance to continue his fascination with undesirable edibles.
Thank you to those who help keep our boat afloat by supporting our creative process via Patreon. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee.

Music
Luna Keller - I don't know where I'm going
Brooke Annibale - O come o come Emmanuel
Rosa Del lete - How great where the Robins
Cricket Farm - Like were crazy
David Mumford - Ball and chain
We are stoked if you take the time to watch our journey. Even better if you take the time to 'like', 'comment' or 'share' (or all of the above) our KZread videos. These are free things that help us enormously.
Thank you!

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 19, Declan 17 and Ivan 14, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
Our plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Why is fish roe considered a delicacy? You eat roe and no one bats an eyelid. However, give the other gamete a nibble and it just seems wrong. Nice drone and underwater filming, with the seal, coral reefs and (tasty) lobsters!! Bth, Declan, nice first catch! Wow!! While cleaning it, it was lucky you didn't got atacked by those menacing seagulls... Ivan did grow quite a lot over the past few vlogs... But never left behind his own character, 👍👍 Neither Rob, haha. Wise words always ready. (In fact, and that is the best, none of you Hamills lost it, key to keep us engage with your adventures). This is the worst cooking show on youtube!! 🔰 Side note ... when I was in college I shopped at the same Montecito grocery store as Julia Child. She would come over to my cart and ask, “now what do you plan on making with these ingredients.” After doing this regularly I had the ingredients for a cobbler and she said, “that sounds unique and delicious. Would you show me how to make that?” So I went over and cooked with Julia Child!! I should add that while in college I was the chauffeur to her neighbor so I was not a complete stranger to Julia Child after I explained why I looked familiar. She said of my cobbler, “your execution is atrocious but your results are astounding.” Seems I fail to follow the proper rules of baking.

The Cruising Kiwis Oh yes, we cooked many times. The first time I made cobbler but she planned dinner. I started talking about Puerto Rican food (my mother is from there) and the herb recao which is used in sofrito. So I came over again to make sofrito with her. She was fascinated that there was an herb she had not used. She was riveted when anyone talked about food. Her husband was very funny. Quiet until he blurted out a punchline. I remember he became ill after I graduated. I fixed their car a couple times too. I think she lived part time in France and when they returned to CA I would get their cars back into shape.

The Cruising Kiwis Well I think the film portrayed two parts of her personality well. I think about the first time in the grocery that she came right up to me ... that fearless connection to people thru food, that came across in the film. Her curiosity was portrayed in the film ... she asked “how will I know if your sofrito is especially good? I have no idea what it is.” I told her, “you will know.” When we finished she dipped a spoon into the sofrito and tasted it, “there are so many layers of flavors. Amazing. We have to prepare a dish with these marvelous flavors.” Then I pulled out a jar of commercially sold “sofrito” and I said, “I have never tasted this because I do not know anyone who buys this product.” After she tasted it she said, “this does not make me want to cook anything!” What was not portrayed in the film ... she was a very sophisticated woman disguised a bit with her being boisterous and funny, but she saw everything and said nothing. We had never discussed me being gay, I never did anything to disguise it. The first time I fixed her car it was a flat tire. I arrived to drive her neighbors to LAX in the limousine, I parked my car across the street and she was in her driveway I asked if she was ok and she replied, “oh, I have to call the tow company there is a flat tire.” I told her not to bother. If her other car was working and she could wait until I returned from LAX I would fix the tire for her in the afternoon. I put the spare on took the flat to be patched and repaired then put it back in place. She came out when I was finished, “my goodness it is amazing. You’ve proven you can cook and now you’ve proven you can fix a car. We are going to have to find a gentleman for you that can truly appreciate your vast range of talents.” I smiled and said, “well you just do that.” This was the 1980’s ... she was well into her 70’s. Just like that complete acceptance without judgement. She knew I was graduating. She called the school to find out the time and location. I never would think to invite her but she was there. I never mentioned her to my parents, they were just dropjawed when I introduced her. And since I asked her I will tell you that she thought the Saturday Night Live skit of her was just the funniest thing. “Utterly hilarious” she said. Also cooking was about socializing for her. Her husband would sit there in the kitchen while we were chopping and cooking. To this day I love being in the kitchen while everyone is cooking together.
