Back in 95-98 me and my friends used to buy the Yamaha version of this bike the sr 125 or 250 , because they were a learning bike in the 🇬🇧 U.K. ,and got smashed or crashed a lot and stolen, and we would buy them for £50-£80 , bought a lot of them!! Put something like a kx 100 front end on , put a nobly tyre on the back and then take the air box lid off and pull out the filter ( for the sound ) and then have hours of fun with all the lads down the woods 😁😁😇.

You can get that speedometer apart, i've done it a few times. You need to slowly and carefully pry back that crimp with a jewelers screwdriver. The crimp in the middle, not the one over the glass lens. Once apart straighten the needle and put it back together then carefully fold the crimp back over, the metal is very soft, it's pretty easy to work with. I did this on a 1981 CB750F that needed the glass replaced in the speedo.

lol, this proves my point about nobody wanting late 70's and early 80's Honda CM's. I bought the CM185 that I built on my channel for $300 with a clean title and 6k original miles. It was for sale for months. The later CM's had that god awful looking frame like this one does. They'll run forever like most old Honda's do however, if you can get past the looks and slim aftermarket options.

Lucky lucky man! If that speedo is anything like my XL500S speedo, it is stamp pressed at the back of it with the lip running all the way around. I made a jig to hold the speedo and used a screwdriver to slowly ‘peel’ the housing apart to gain access to the internals, managed to repair it but in the end it need to be sent to a specialist.

Amazing such a good bike was given away free! I had a blue Hawk 400, best bike I ever owned. Only weakness was the expansion box and mufflers that rusted after a few years. But that 12 valve engine was bullet-proof. The sound when she started up brought back fond memories. Those small Japanese chopper-style bikes from 1980's are great cruisers, even today. Suzuki made a 450L, another classic cruiser from that era. Very strange to see a speedo damaged like that.

There was a 6 speed model and the CM450 Hondamatic with a 2 speed gear box and a constant velocity clutch that some call a torque converter. Having trouble seeing the video clearly (problem's on my end tonight) but I think I see "Hondamatic" on the gear indicator next to the speedometer. When they were new, a few drag racers realized their value at the track. They were so consistent in the quarter mile runs that they would eliminate the high dollar drag bikes and hurt a lot of egos lolol. The guys that ran against 'em and lost, hated them. If it's the 6 speed manual, it's probably an CM450E model because they came with the wire spokes and a drum brake on the front. Check the value on them. They were climbing up the last I'd heard.

  • @sandmanbub

Just got a better look at your bike and it appears to be the 6 speed. The instrument lights to the right of the speedometer have a "OD" light which indicates when the transmission is in over drive/ 6'th gear. Weird way to do it. It had something to do with the fuel shortage we hade decades ago due to an embargo. Makes that bike even more unique. Need to find out why the transmission isn't shifting into all 6 gears.

You deff should have checked the oil before you started it. Put it up on the center stand or you'll never get all the old oil out. I had a CB 350 and it had a centrifugal oil cleaner that needed taken apart and wiped out with a clean rag. This may have the same setup. They were great bikes, those old Hondas.

Gosh! I about fell out of my chair when I saw you had gotten a Honda Street Bike! Then when you started it up so easily, I started laughing! Nothing like an old Honda to just keep running and running and running. This one looked like it was kept indoors all these years. A vast difference between this and all those others you've drug home that were exposed to the elements. Some of the stuff you bring in from the Cold, I just Roll my Eyes. But, I get it, it's a challenge, and entertaining etc. The Honda 450 was Honda's largest Engine until Honda released their 750 in the late 1960's. And they were fairly fast. With a 450, you should be able to get 90 mph easy enough. Good enough for a Commuter Bike. I've owned Dirt Bikes, and Street Bikes, and I'll ride a Street Bike any day over a Bike made for the Dirt. Always enjoy a Street Bike restoration. I would be curious to see what you get for this one when you sell it. Thumbs Up on this Video.

I think the pre-750 honda dohc 450 was a bit of a hot rod for its time. The 450’s like this one here are not the same as those were and its just not a performance engine at all. Indeed it’s more of a workhorse situation, sort of like a giant 125 or something. But they are great and they last for sure. Honda makes amazing stuff.
