Beside the well-known typical ornaments like the trill and mordent, in the Baroque period it was also possible to add freer ornamentation. How did people learn to do this?
One answer comes from Johann Joachim Quantz, in his 1752 Versuch, a flute method. Quantz uses typical melodic and harmonic building blocks to teach options for ornamentation and all the while gives some useful tips about ornamentation in general.
