"The Heller Approach" is an acting technique that gives actors a simple yet practical and solid foundation so that actors are ready and empowered with reliable and easily accessible tools to work in any medium. The technique and its application are based on muscle memory and not on past personal experiences.
The amazing technique is born from working actors and directors. It truly frees the artist to access feelings and thoughts that are universal to all humans, helping actors to create the most believable, entertaining characters in a way that is conducive to the fast-paced entertainment industry.
"The Heller Approach" is taught exclusively by Brad Heller, a working actor, director, and acting coach. Group classes are available every Wednesday night and Tuesday days in Los Angeles, California. Private lessons are also available via Skype, Zoom, or in person.
Professor Heller taught for 5 years at UCLA before opening his own acting studio in 1995. Heller's teachings are based on the works of his former teacher and mentor, Don Richardson, who was an original member of the Group Theater, which was the nucleus of Acting in the United States. Richardson's fellow students were Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen. Don was one of the Group Theatre students who said, "The Method is NOT what acting is about." He directed over 800 television shows in his time.
Don's acting technique became a rescue for Brad Heller because despite having a degree in theater from one of the world's finest theater programs, Boston University School of Theater Arts, and trying multiple acting techniques, Brad could not enjoy the process of acting. Combining Don Richardson's acting technique with the knowledge of anxiety from Dr. Eda Gorbis and lessons from his mentor Academy Award winner Seth Winston, and more, the Heller Approach has become trusted by thousands of students globally.

    +thehellerapproach Most of my experience is classical stage, so TV is completely new. People are very friendly and helpful but I'll need all the help I can get. You are right about who they pick, only people that get along with others. People who are hard work to deal with are eliminated at the first interviews. If this series goes on for years it's important that everyone is happy with each other. I intend to get on well with everyone, especially the writers, and not be a pain to anyone. This is my big break, I won't mess this up.

    I believe after years of trial and error working in different professions that no matter if it is a casting director, a producer, or the hiring manager of a company that manufactures widgets, they all have, with some exceptions, a preconceived idea of the kind of person they want. Why? Because talent searches eat up time and money and both are typically in limited supply. People in hiring positions generally have great confidence in their ability to size up people instantly. You many have the best resume or a magnetic personality, but sometimes, it just isn't enough because you aren't the "type" they are looking for. Luck is the dirty little secret of the entire process, unfortunately a component that no amount of talent or experience can compensate for. Typically, it works out that the interview you feel wasn't your best is the one that gets you hired. That's one of the cruelest ironies of any profession.

    Great video, as always, thank you! In my very first audition with a director and producer, I nailed it. We hit it off, they were all smiles, they were talking about how they'd cast my costars and ended it with "You will hear from me REAL soon." I never did. I later found that my representation (a scammy "agency" that charged through the nose to get in the door) might have messed up the deal but they wouldn't talk to me about it. Brad, do you have any advice for actors when they audition and already have representation? Is it ok to audition if the agent didn't set it up? (In my case, they DID set up the audition for me) Do you follow up with the agent after the audition, etc.? I thought it was my big break and 20 years later I'm still trying to make it. I don't ever want to go through that again.

  • @thehellerapproach

    Sorry to hear about that ordeal. Any reputable agent should be OK with your auditioning for projects that you self-submitted for. Backstage and Actors Access are two examples of good resources for casting calls, whether you have representation or not. -Brad's Staff

    What if it's a bad character who in some scenes is trying to come across as a good person? I'm just thinking of those horror movies where we sometimes don't realize a character is mean until near the end, like the Will Benson character in "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer". I guess my question is, when people are playing mean or evil characters, how do actors make that character likable?

  • @thehellerapproach

    @thehellerapproach

    3 жыл бұрын

    A great example to help you with this is Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs. Even though he plays an evil character, he has a magnetic quality to him that makes you want to watch him on screen. Always remember - everyone is a hero in their own story. A villain isn't just a villain to be a villain - there's always a driving force that makes them believe that what they're doing is right. Hope this helps!

    Thank you for your support to the channel! Our first recommendation is always to get proper training first. Taking classes, or private lessons is very important. In doing so you are establishing a foundation, a technique that you can trust and rely on. As an actor you need to know how to breakdown material, analyze, understand the text, and create believable characters. Are you currently taking any acting lessons?
