Your channel is a rich trove of gems. I am so glad I stumbled onto it. One of my favorite actors, who had an exquisite speaking voice, was Alastair Sim. I kept thinking of him during this video. It would be a hard discipline to undertake, but I imagine that an actor would benefit by starting with just voice and posture exercises for a year so that it becomes rote, before ever learning a line or asking, "What's my motivation?"

I struggle with speaking clearly and your suggestion to play a character who happens to speak clearly helps immensely. The slightly raised pitch suggestion I find harder to implement but it makes sense. Thank you so much for posting.

This is an amazing video I'm a 12 year old actress and I'm playing Lyra in his dark materials , it's the biggest part I've had yet and one of the hardest. The concept of the story can be complicated and often I don't understand what I'm saying. My main problem is projecting my voice , this video has been of absolute great help and I understand you get money from privately tutoring therefore I think that it's very kind of you to share tips

You're welcome, and if you ever want coaching on skype tell your parents they would be very welcome to be in on the session. But either way just work hard on your lines, as that is what leads to a good performance mostly!

I can only guess the answer - as all actors are different, - and I don't know you: but if you "interpret" lines, knowing what they really (really) mean, you may find yourself WANTING and needing to speak clearly. But that kind of work takes MONTHS, so are you ever doing that? John Windsor-Cunningham

@@NewYorkActingCoach Yes, I really want and need to. I am a method actor and I disappear into my roles so I understand interpretation of lines so well. My projection is OK but my speech..... it's like my tongue wiggles my words into blabbing instead of speaking clearly and I always tend to go too fast, especially in front of the camera. I'm doing my first movie though and that's my experience. On stage it's not so bad but on camera, terrible!

Thank you very much for this. I’ve always struggled with either a nasally voice or a low, back-of-the-throat voice. I often end up raising my voice which amplified the problem. I have a softish Mancunian accent. After listening to your advice, I’m starting to overcome these problems. I have my first show in December after passing my audition.

bitchimsexyy 666 I found it enormously beneficial to record myself talking or reading a piece of prose. By messing around with inflections and such, I was able to find a happy medium.

I wish I could have a coach as good as him . I have always wanted to act since I was little I would act in my room alone . Thank you for this video and all your tips 🙏🏻

If you can't afford coaching then try to find a class with others, as that may also get you information about auditions, and if you make a friend in the group and buy them a coffee you may get lots of help from them. Just keep at it as much as possible. Actors who work at acting only about two days each month are likely to find it more difficult than those who do some sort of work every day. Read a thousand scripts for a start. John Windsor-Cunningham

If we could arrange that and you could afford the time, I would love to compensate you for your time and energy, I am an acting coach out of sheer dumb luck and I truly want to improve myself. for myself. More importantly I truly want to continue to improve myself for as long as I have lungs to talk and a heart to perform. I used the tip of slightly raising the tone of my voice in a show called "One for the pot” (a Cooney comedy) which a City in Virginia, Smithfield, is putting on this coming February- March, and it was fantastic, my director noticed immediately.

How would an actor train their voice to make it their OWN unique voice? e.g. Hopkins, Rickman, Christopher Lee, McKellen - they all have different voices but are all so enviable. Do standard exercises merely draw out/enhance the innate qualities of their voices, or can one "learn" and "acquire" such qualities?

I've worked with all he guys you mention except Lee, and it can be a matter of 'truth' that makes the sound of a voice. Personally I think Tony Hopkins knows more about truth than the others and it has made his voice fuller, but the point is to make sure your lines are said from the heart. If you can work hard enough at it to reach that point. John Windsor-Cunningham

You know, at one time I didn't understand why the director demanded to speak louder "Ann, and the rest of you behind the fourth row will not be heard", because according to the meaning of one of my scenes there is a calm, casual conversation,it would be unnatural ... how to speak louder? I realized that you can speak loudly and at the same time in a calm tone, but I cannot comprehend this skill (for now) I lower my voice and after a few days it becomes coarse and then disappears altogether.

If your voice "disappears" something must be wrong. And the answer - as most deaf people know - is that people need to speak NOT 'louder' but 'more clearly' - using the consonants at the start and end of words, so that the words do not sound like some OTHER words ( !!) That, if I may so, is the trick. Deaf people love it. Just speak clearly and everyone will be happy. Actors I work with can almost whisper their lines if a microphone is attached to them AS LONG AS they say all of the W. . or . . D . Sorry to go on about this, but it makes audiences and friends LOVE you. John Windsor-Cunningham

@@user-dt1qr8xr5t I know I myself called it a "trick", but the warmth of our voice must connect with a real warmth in ourselves, or it can sound horribly false, - charm may sound 'smarmy'! So taking in what the other person asks, in the SAME CARING caring way, - not just listening but listening gently, - helps our voice to have the tone which interests people. Of course. Sorry that may be obvious, but is not always to actors when saying lines written by somebody else! John Windsor-Cunningham

It's complicated. And, in short, difficult. I'm not an expert on visas, though I understand some drama schools in the USA, and some university courses give the chance to continue working in the USA, but the competition for every job is enormous. The one advantage you have is being young. Sorry, I can't give names to people I don't know. It can raise problems, and if you really want somebody then ask on Backstage.com or if you only want somebody to listen to then listen to then I fear you need to listen to lots of audio books. Maybe think of an actor you feel has the kind of sound you want, and see what books he has done. JOhn
