I was very fortunate to be able to perform with Freddie on alto saxophone as well about this same time, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at a jam at the Apartment Lounge. I used to sometimes play second alto to Kenny's first in Marcus Belgrave's New Detroit Jazz Ensemble.

I really dislike his aesthetic conceptions. Don't sounds good to me.

This piece is so full of texture that a blind person could just about read it with their fingertips. Kenny Garrett is so good in this that it's the sound of mystical flight from 16min on

Man I am SO FEELIN that guy in the crowd at 19:14...maybe a young German saxophonist? A musician for sure, I'd bet. What I would've given to be there! So inspiring. Love Kenny Garrett, and Freddie is one of my biggest heroes, but I never got to see him in an intimate venue like this before he passed away.

Amazing performance. Hubbard was a giant but has not received his share of fame.

tromly76+You're telling me. I don'r know much about jazz but i can hear how distinct his sound is. He is built like a bull-that helps to play the trumpet when it would make the physical force aspect effortless. It's the same with upper body strength and flamenco guitar and why there are virtually no female players. Not the only reason he's great of course. Errol Garner was a sexual volcano...that same physical tangible behind their sound

It always annoys the hell out of me that the jazz community in general does not give Freddie the praise and credit other greats get. People will always list 10 cats before they get to Freddie. Personally Lee Morgan is my number 1 and Freddie is second. I love all the other greats but for trumpet I will listen to those two cats first. I wish I could have seen Freddie live. He has such a different style.

@@erichuang7524 Great top 3. I would add Dizzy to my top 3 as well. In my opinion he took trumpet playing to another level. People forget he was a mentor to Lee Morgan. I am a big fan of Clifford Brown and Booker Little as well.

I've never been a huge Freddie fan--his technical prowess was awesome but a bit overwhelming for me. That said, this show is LEGIT. There is some serious blowing here, especially from Freddie and Kenny. Check it out and enjoy.

In a acoustically weird space with a cruddy old upright a rubbery sounding horrible 80's condenser on the Bass, zee Germans television engineers made a decent mix. Having 5000$ Senheiser mics helps, but still, Mein Gott!! Maybe German television could do some Foreign Aid to the US. Send a couple engineers to Newport. Train their sorry ass sound people? just a thought.
