Frank Drake - Why Aren't Aliens Already Here?

It seems absurd in a universe with 100 billion galaxies, each with billions of stars and planets, that we are the only intelligent life. So where are all the others? This is the famous 'Fermi Paradox,' asked by Nobel Laureate Enrico Fermi. By any reasonable calculation, we should see evidence of other civilizations all over the universe, but we see nothing.
It is with deep sadness that we at Closer To Truth, along with our viewers, acknowledge the death of Frank Drake on September 2, 2022 at the age of 92. More importantly, we celebrate his life and seminal contributions to how we think about the universe, the possibility (to Frank, the high likelihood) that extraterrestrial intelligences populate the universe. He made significant contributions to radio studies of the planets and was one of the founding pioneers of the search for extraterrestrial intelligences; he was one of the first trustees of the SETI Institute. His eponymous “Drake Equation” set the standard for estimating probabilities of extraterrestrial intelligences.

That mind encompasses infinitely more than the universe. 3. Nothing inside the universe could have created the universe, hence aliens are not god in the way you mean it. 4. God is an intermediate level being which encompasses all of awareness among all beings. 5. Gods nature is mind. It has being, awareness, consciousness, will/intention, knowing, love. God can't experience hatred, jealousy, fear, etc at its level of existence. It fractionated its awareness into infinite perspectives upon itself to experience what can actualized from the possibility space. It is through us (itself) that god knows negative emotions. This is called The Dark Forest Theory. It can be thought of as an outgrowth of the Precautionary Principle, in which any intelligent society which detects another in space must destroy it if it can in order to eliminate the possibility of being destroyed itself. This is too grim an outlook for me. But I do think we should not be sending messages to try and get ourselves noticed at this time.

The earth is made of rock, dust and whatever accumulated from space to make earth a livable planet. From that came all sorts of materials that comprise this planet even gold came here from outer space. We as "human beings" have only been here for such a short amount of time! Remember, the earth is over three and a half billion years old! So many changes have happened in all that time. Could it be possibe that an example of alien life could be some kind of consciousness thats evolved to not need a visible/physical body? Or maybe like a cloud like the one from futurama or star trek? If this were the case than we would need to change how we look for life. And who knows, maybe someone has already discovered this and is interacting with them already. I personally think that there could very well possibly be ‘beings’ that vibrate at a different rate than us.

Even if our consciousness was compatible with an Alien, to the point, that we could find a common way to communicate, the timing of our Brains is tuned to the neighborhood of, their home planets position in the Galaxy/Universe. (our brains and their brains are working like a 33rpm record compared to a 45rpm record, more than tone and pitch is changed though) I wonder if advanced Aliens have a similar barrier to space travel, and their visiting us is more of a compromise to actually being here. Imagine UFOs being an Illusion, Like a cross between Virtual Reality with Remote observation. A futuristic Duck Blind to observe Humans/Earth, and moments of failure to 'hide' is when we people see their efforts. We only see 'Flying Saucers', or 'Tic-Tacs', when their ability to hide is down. (or when it is inefficient to hide.) The ability to have craft break rules of physics, Like transferring from air travel to sub marine travel without a splash down, or to hover motionless in the presence of chaotic weather. Weird feats like this suggest that they are not affected by atmosphere because they are not completely there.

After 2 decades of writing I come to the conclusion that most people are living a delusionary reality. They lack a sincere curiosity for the experiences of others--- yet use words that give themselves influence over lesser aware individuals--- the Priest/Priestess complex. Contact is direct. There is no "authority" that can act as an intermediator between what is labeled ET and what we can perceive directly. Contact is not "out there in the cosmos aboard space ships." We have been mislead. 😁😨 My 71 years of documented evidence reveals another reality. Maybe I am the only one? The mathematics does not lie. It began at my conception time/date. It is referenced by my birth certificate number, and my Social Security Number, and my Selective Service Number. Most interestingly, we bought a home 25 years ago that coincidentally reveals the coincidence of my exact birth time and date. The sequence of addresses over my lifetime is amazing. Above the home where I lived from age 7 to age 18--- on a g.map--- are the letters "et". 😨 The evidence is beyond coincidental at this point. Some say that a lifetime of research proves a theory.

UFO’s or UAP’s have been documented since the 50’s and arguably much earlier than that. Now the government openly states that we have objects flying with impunity over restricted airspace, performing maneuvers that defy the laws of physics as we currently understand them. Aliens could be thousands or millions of years ahead of us. Would we understand anything they did? That they are here is a fact. Too many credible examples exist. They can even turn on and off out nuclear warheads. How they got here, where are they from and how do they operate we might not understand for another 100,000 year. If you told him that in the future people would be able to travel anywhere in the world in flying machines, he'd think you were crazy, or possessed by a devil. Humans are extraordinarily bad at predicting the future (and I say this as someone whose business it is to predict the future), and that's what you're doing when you try to imagine the motives and the technologies of aliens. I think they are here (USS Nimitz incident), and they can transgress our visible light wavelengths, but on occasion slip up and become visible. A cloaking mechanism would be quite simple relative to the sophistication in technology used on any craft to bend spacetime and travel here to begin with…

@@d.r.tweedstweeddale9038 New ideas are always deemed stupid and crazy until sometimes they end up being true. The human brain is an interface that gathers and filters electromagnetic information. It ‘interprets’ light refraction as colour, and pressure waves as sound. In reality both phenomena don’t actually exist as we perceive them, the brain simply interprets those wavelengths as an end product phenomena in our heads. Therefore, reality as we experience it is an ‘interpretation’ of electromagnetic wavelengths, and not absolute full ‘objective’ reality. The point I’m wanting to make is how can you be confident in your understanding of reality when you can not actually perceive infallible objective reality yourself? I believe the USS Nimitz tic-tac craft was able to manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum in ways we’ve yet to fully understand (or fully disclose). I went as far as to say these craft seem to bend the spacetime around them, as well as hide in plain sight above, below or around our visible light wavelength. The videos we have are e occasions they appear in our visible range. I believe whatever the USS Nimitz UAP phenomena was had a consciousness, purpose, and knew how to navigate around our electromagnetic perception limitations. The behaviour of these tic tac objects are consistent in each case, looking like ‘balls of light’ and ‘moving erratically defying the laws of physics’. So given all the blatant anomalies out there on this subject, who are you to say another distant civilization didn’t figure out how to manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum and bend spacetime to their advantage to get here?

Something to consider is that EVERYTHING had to be just right for life to begin on Earth. Not just the Earth itself - but the whole Solar System had to be set up just right for life to flourish on THIS planet. Change anything - even the tilt of the Earth ( which was caused by a one - off collision ) and things might be different. Bearing all this in mind, you can begin to appriciate how rare life actually is - despite the size of the Universe.

Since the history of earth's birth, and the cycles it went through, its evident enough that existence can be possible in other planets too. Which images they emerged to, depends on the right conditions that made it possible. So, we shouldn't expect human like aliens, that's human fantasy, I'd rather be prepared with some kind of species that can survive space, and maybe our atmosphere with no problem. Our biological existence may be unique in the wide cosmos, and we might experience other life forms pretty soon.

It absolutely CAN fail. Not detecting a signal is not a conclusive answer that we are alone. Also - because of the speed of light, we can only see the distant past. If life only became possible 1 million years ago (because of some underlying property of the universe that changed at that time) - and it started developing everywhere in the universe simultaneously (at the same rate as us) we still wouldn’t be able to see ANY of it - because the light from their stars (and any radio signals) hasn’t reached us yet. A lot of the stars we see when we look to the sky are already dead and gone - but we’ll continue to see their light for many millennia.

It is a very complex question. First of all, you have to know what to look for. You have to understand completely what constitutes "life". Then you have to be objective enough to consider all possibilities and that some of what you thought was the fact is wrong. Not easy. There is any number of possibilities for life (especially advanced life) to take form in the universe. You see when we look at exoplanets we look at them as we might look for a species similar to us. You know the distance from the star in the so-called "habitable zone". Do we really know what that habitable zone is? I tend to agree with Drake that alien species are not going to advertise themselves to us. Especially if they are more advanced. What would be the purpose? As for concerns that an advanced species may wipe us out, I doubt it. If they are advanced they already know we are here. We are no threat to them and so for whatever reason, they have left us alone. For whatever reason, they have cloaked their existence from us so once again no threat to them. We can't reach them so once again not an issue. We also don't know that an advanced species follows a Type 1, 2, 3, etc advance. Maybe they are content with their own evolution the way it is without expansion? I don't know. I simply paint these scenarios to show humility in the face of the unknown. It is only through this humility that we will at some point make contact.

J Krishnamurti talking with David Bohm, Ojai,1980. 'The Ending of Time '. And any of his other talks shows that the wrong questions are being asked. It's not ' Where are the Aliens', but ' Where Are We'. Rupert Sheldrake talking with Graham Hancock also explains about the mechanism used to create our daily live, 'The Waking Dream', is the same that creates the Sleeping Dream. I've had a contract with an intelligently controlled disc when I was 14yrs old, and this occurred with two other boys who saw it also. In fact we flashed our cycle lights at it and it altered course to come over to our location and then started to descend. My friends ran but I stayed. Ten years after the contract, I asked for proof if contact was still with me, and I got confirmation which involved me changing jobs. I've also had an experience with a red light on the road, one other friend in attendance, in the 1980s in S W Wales late at night which involved odd time..... I'm going to say manipulation/distortion.... because that's what it seemed to be. And a friend was confronted with the so called 'Men In Black' , who spoke with her and said something that involved an action which I did that connected me with what they said. All this happened many years ago, but even to this day synchronistic events are being recorded. What seems to be happening with our perception is that the physical/material reality is flawed. 'They' are not Extraterrestrial, but are able to exploit our limited view of where and how we exist. I say that the phenomena originates from the ' Sleeping Dream' State, and that's what we need to explore. Of course, to call it a 'Dream', is to do the concept a great disservice. Because It's as 'real' as our daily live view is. Google, ' Ignacio Darnaude, Westwood teleportation 1954'. I have been researching this for many years, and have spoken with Margaret Westwood, an ex police officer, who believed the case to have merit. And once again, as soon as I started to delve into the case, synchronicity 'raised it's head'. I've started watching ' Fringe '. The TV series is worth watching as it reveals many new concepts we can explore. Carlos Castaneda's audio books on KZread are another avenue to become acquainted with. 'I Origins' with Michael Pitt and Brit Marling, about reincarnation, was mentioned on 'Art Bell' talking with Dean Radin. ( Timeline.pt 10810).

There’s an implicit assumption that if the the conditions for Life (as we understand it) are present, *Intelligent* Life is inevitable. “The Vital Question” by Nick Lane points out using energy calculations and arguments, that while (Carbon based) bacterial life should evolve relatively easily given a certain Goldilocks planetary conditions, multicellular life - required for intelligent creatures - is hardly inevitable. In particular though bacterial life has been around for nearly the whole of Earth’s history, there are no multicellular bacterial life. Only eukaryotic. Lane argues using energy calculations that eukaryotic life - or more broadly cells that have a tendency to come together to build larger structures - should be exceedingly rare and that the evolution of the eukaryotic cell was more or less serendipitous. If his reasoning is right, it means that bacterial like life should be fairly common but multicellular (let alone intelligent) life very rare.

Why would you assume that other life forms would live in “cities” with essentially electric lights?

  • @r.davidsen

    @r.davidsen

    Жыл бұрын

Because mastering electricity is one of the easiest things an advanced civilization can learn. Also, it is a sure sign of life and intelligence, as well as being relatively "easy" to detect. It isn't assumed that aliens live in cities, have civilizations at all, or that they have city lights. With that said, such a thing would be "easy" to detect. He was just using an example which it is easy to understand. The more advanced technology a civilization has, the harder it is to hide yourself. For example, a civilization that can build a Dyson sphere around a planet or a star would be one of the easiest things to detect, and we could do it right now. There are even candidates for such objects. There are stars whose light is obscured by objects larger than planets that orbit said stars closer than a planet would do. Those stars are the very first objects I would point the James Webb telescope in.

It is understandable that we are interested about whether intelligent, communicative life exists out in our or other Solar Systems but I find it odd how we care so much about trying to contact and understand other intelligent life on other planets when we appear to care so little about our own intelligent species and guaranteeing their future survival (Whales, Gorillas, Elephants, etc.) right now, before it’s too late. If we ever did manage to communicate back and forth with another planet’s intelligent life form, they could never travel the massive distances to get here, thank goodness, but they could possibly give us good advice on how to better run things on our own planet, for our long term survival, and explain to us the importance of keeping the diversity of life here on our planet healthy and intact, like our Scientists do all the time, to which most likely, all our leaders, governments, people would promptly ignore.

Excellent interview with the late Frank Drake, let us honor his memory as a seminal contributor to SETI. Drake argued that if they exist advanced ET civilizations in our galaxy will make it hard to detect them, requiring substantial resources dedicated to SETI. Then he says that it will require the cost of one space mission to make a real assessment. But what if the cost is much higher, consistent with the Galactic Club having a protocol to only admit civilizations that are no longer primitive like our own with perpetual wars, preventable misery and the threat of climate catastrophe? This is precisely what I argued in 2010 in my essay SETI Redux: Joining the Galactic Club, originally published on Astrobiology Magazine.

Our paths regarding radio signals have to cross at the right time - or the wrong time depending on how you look at it. If a civilisation 1000 light years away was at the same stage as us - then we wouldn’t see it for another 1000 years. Then they may have done this 15000 years ago - so 3000 years BC for us so we couldn’t detect it. Those signals may well have been and gone - and we may have missed them. The senders may have destroyed themselves by now - we are heading that way after all.

And that's the challenge with just listening for radio signals. The Earth may have formed billions of years after, or before, other worlds that support life. And those worlds may have had their civilizations rise and fall without ever developing radio signal generating tech. It's a crap shoot at the very best that we would receive a signal from a distant world that is likely to be technologically produced. The timing of it all is highly problematic. And then like you said, if it came from a distant solar system, potentially billions of light years away, do they still exist? Probably not. By the time their signal arrived their star, or one close enough to them, may have gone nova and wiped them out completely, or their galaxy may have collided with another. Just because we are where we are in our time line doesn't mean any other world's advancements parallel our own.
