He was just 22 years old when he first fought Ali in Las Vegas in February 1973, turned 23 in Msrch and then fought Frazier at Earls Court London in July. Think about that for a minute and let it sink in. Years later after coming out of retirement in his mid 30s he beat James Tillis, Bonecrusher Smith David Bey and Greg Page. Joe Bugner was never forgiven for 'beating' Henry Cooper in his final fight. Personally, I think Henry won that fight, but the decision went to Joe. He wasn't culpable for that, but the media gave him a hard time consistently as a result. I don't think he ever received the recognition he deserved. He gave Ali a really good go, and the same with Frazier- that alone deserves considerable respect. He seems to have been overlooked for years, but there's no doubting he was a highly capable boxer and athlete.

I was ringside for this fight just behind Bugner's family. Wow they got some stick ! There was a lot of unrest for some reason with a fight breaking out in the stands and chairs and all sorts being thrown ringside at the end. I didn't realise how big a fella Bugner was until he walked past me when he left the ring. Expectation was that Frank would put him away early due to Bugner's age but I think Frank knew that he couldn't be under estimated with all the experience Joe had.

Did the referee know that there was a fight going on? Bugner fell bag into the ropes, that's considered a knockdown if the ropes are holding you up. The little bald leprechaun did nothing while Bruno beat him on the back of the head with several hard shots. Then Bruno grabbed Bugner by the head and shoved him down, the referee was standing there picking his nose the whole time. Everything Bruno did after the first punch hurt Bugner was illegal. Bruno was hitting behind the head the entire fight. They should have had a referee that was taller than Mickey Rooney. 2 fighters 6'6" and a referee about 4' 2" doesn't work too well.

How times change. I don’t know if it’s down to nutrition, training or what, but nowadays nobody would say a heavyweight is over the hill at 37, like they did about Bugner in this fight. Zhang is 40, and just knocked out Joyce (twice.) Joyce was 37 when he knocked out Parker. Klitschko (although he lost) gave what many consider his best performance against AJ at 41, knocking down and dazing AJ in R6. Usyk was 36 when he knocked out 25 yr old Dubois. Maybe it was the UK media again, who never forgave him for defeating Cooper. In fact, he once said that if he’d known the shitstorm that would follow, he wouldn’t have taken that fight.

37 was ancient back then, make no mistake. Yes, boxers age very differently now - partly due to improved training and nutrition, but mostly due to less wear and tear. Boxers back in the day would fight 4, 5, 6 times a year and retire with 50, 60, 70 fights under their belt - nowadays it's once a year, 30-35 fights and you're done.

Dirty fighter Frank Bruno! The worst Rabbit puncher in the game, to be honest I'm not sure I'd even say Frank won the fight. The only one to hold their head high is Joe . Hitting a bloke on the back of the head while the man is on one knee and holding onto the ropes is a blurt on boxing. Punching after the bell and also while the ref is in between is not good at all. I used to like Bruno and often cheered for him but after watching a few of his fights lately I'm not impressed with his dirty tactics .

What a nice humble down to earth guy frank is 😊
I remember Joe calzaghe's father telling a story about the time Bugner gave if I clout around the ear, the reporter said "did it hurt" to which Enzo replied "yea of cause , it made me cry"..the reporter then asked "WHERE did this happen" to which Enzo replied over by the monkey frames and swings....I remember thinking what were they doing fighting in a children's play ground...then it dawned on me ..this happened when they were both little kids growing up in London....ha ha ha ha.
Joe was not going to get help from the ref in this fight despite being hit on the back of the head multiple times ,

That's The British for ya...bad behaviour everywhere they go...they remind me of animals!!
Joe was 37 years old and could still land some heavy punches ! Looks like he may have made the same mistake in this fight he did in the fight with Lyle . He waited too much on his opponent didn't jab first . If he had struck first more often and moved a little more he might even at his age have given Bruno a surprise. Bruno hit behind the head a lot. Also held Bugner behind the neck and hit.
Aj is the modern Bruno .

AJ is a poor mans Bruno tbh both have really good steroids though
Bugner went the distance with Ali twice and arguably beat frazier in a very close decision... very underrated fighter
Bugner has never been knocked out in a title fight
i think joe was underated big time
Bruno beat an old joe he wouldn’t off beat a young joe
Bugner was only a year or 2 older than Tyson Fury and Usyk.
Frank had a beautiful jab on him
Man these guys were so stationary they had no footwork, that's why Tyson bombed out Bruno twice and there's no doubt he would've done the same with Joe
Gotta be the only guy to fight the British public’s favourite two fighters. Cooper and Bruno
This so nice to see to gentlemen fight very respectful
In Bugner’s defense he was already old and out of shape

Well said and I agree, even going one further as to disqualify Frank as only damage done, was caused buy illegal blows. Quite pathetic on Frank's and the refs behalf. Joe for the win in this one for me.
They are class act
I was never a particular fan of either Bugner or Bruno tbh. But what a dirty fighter Bruno was. A young Joe would wipe the floor with Bruno.
Full respect to Bugner
That comment Bruno made about just trying to survive really applied to him against Tyson. Bruno is a nice guy but he was carefully matched and avoided dangerous guys like Holyfield, Morrison and others.
Rabbit punches from Bruno totally illegal
Yes as many have stated he went the distance with Ali twice never got the credit he deserved he had it all but just lacked the killer instinct but there was good reason as one of his opponents died shor t ly after the bout
Must’ve been cold you see their breath
Joe was definitely a stayer, no quitter but also unfortunately, not a decisive puncher either...
Big Joe was as Tough as Nails
Un grande boxeador!!!
Don't know if it's true but i remember being told that after his fight against Ali, Ali spent 2 weeks in Hospital and Bugner went swimming.
Frank was a bit naughty punching him when he was on his knee.

-Who needs a rigged fight. If Cooper wanted to beat Joe Bugner Then he should gave a better showings. But they wanted Bugner to throw the fight & let Cooper win.
Bugner beat Henry Cooper fair and square, all of Coopers ranting was because he thought no one would ever beat him. Joe Bugner could have been world champion but he just didn’t use his strength or ring craft in any of his fights, it was like he didn’t want to get his face messed up
Nice interview with his lady. Burner had his payday and was gracious in defeat. Good work by the cornermen to throw in the towel.
Joe is practically sitting and ref lets Frank hit him at will. Crooked.

-To bad a chair was not thrown into the ring and hit that no good Ref on the head. The people right next to the ring were already throwing chairs all over the place.
I liked both these guys, not like the trash talking boxers today. Joe Bugner was very underrated. He was smooth looking, he had a good style, and he never really gotvhurt in the ring. He had his wins and losses, ok, he never won the big ones, but, he always gave a good account of himself
Bugner a gentleman, off to Australia 🇦🇺 now , the real winner 🏆 😊
Bruno rabbit punching and hitting after the bell had gone - what a little sh*t.

I wish they would say Bugner real height. He’s obviously taller than 6’3”
How times change.

AJ and Bruno very similar.
2 Naturals both 6’4 there’s gonna be a lot thumping in the ring Joe Bugner 👍👏
Burner could’ve been a great. But he was never the same after the death of Ulric Regis.
weird to see the superstar reception Bugner got (police protection, limousines,...) when he arrived. The man was a glorified journeyman, only famous for losing against Ali and Frasier and winning a fight most people say he lost against an aging Cooper.
Bugner was the greatest sparring partner of all time.
Tyson fury and joe bugner are the same equally as good as each other ,bugner in his prime would boxed Bruno’s head off and joe would made a fortune fighting todays fighters and would been unified world champion
I never understood Bugner he went the distance with all of them. And not much else.
was hitting back of the head ok back then, ref said jack shit to bruno
Why was it not end of round yet the ref let bruno carry on punching .?
how many rabbit did bruno throw
A hearn was promoting a hype job and ripping the British public off with shit fights even back then lol
Joe is something else great champion
The trouble with Bugner was , he.was a big guy with almost everything in his locker but he never had enough aggression and nor did he enjoy boxing he did it just for the money. You’re never going to be special if you don’t enjoy it.

Joe unfortunately now, is suffering from Vascular dementia. He is in a care home in AUS. Sad to say.

I don’t think Bruno is in much better shape.
I overheard someone say after the result of this that he wanted to put money on Bruno to win this, but was unable to. He was ex-patriate British in Australia, but Australia still did not have sports betting at that time. " I wanted to have a few bob on Bruno. I couldn't get on. Obviously Bruno was going to punch his head off. Just a matter of service [ re; the betting ]. ", was what he said.
AJ really is a poor mans Frank Bruno
fight was fixed..a certain group wanted this result for reasons that cannot be discussed..
Joe was a professional for sure
Why oh why was the towel thrown in on the bell 😉
As fixed as it gets 😂😂😂
Bugner infuriated my dad. He had everything but always boxed within himself, seemed hed rather have a tame defeat than try for a big win. But its not really a criticism, its a job and he went in with the best and never got hammered. It could be he was just a bit smarter than your average Joe.
He knocked him out after the bell that was great, lol.
Joe Bugner one had man.
I was there :) I was smoking a J and a bloke behind me said he was an off-duty policeman and would bust me if I didn't put it out! I put it out. Bastard!
Wow, this looked like a charity fight?
Bugners accent seemed to change after the fight. I thought he was welsh afterwards.
Bugner. I’m Australian wait no I’m British oh. What am I. Lol
Bugner was a different class to Bruno he should have won this fight but as people said it was in England and shit appen
37 looks about 47
The standout here - the referee. From the first bell, allowing the fighters to hit behind the head. The reaction to the end of the fight was also terrible refereeing.
Hell the round was over!!!!
The boxer senior Joe Bugner & Frank Bruno...? The sames life stylish....?
Bruno was a big puncher, just too slow to finish off a decent opponent
