More of an abrupt ending than a brutal beating, it was a very competitive fight right up until the very final exchange. Thats HW boxing, in particular, one punch can not only change a fight, it can change a life, for better or worse.

The USA amateur system back then was producing very high level & highly seasoned competitors, Whitherspoon is a prime example of it. He gave Larry Holmes hell in only his 15th pro fight & fighting Bruno in a stadium of 50,000 in Brunos home town didnt phase him one bit. The Yank attitude back in the day was TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH.

But between 1986-1990 there was nobody who could live with him. What Tyson was & what we haven't seen since, he was extremely aggressive & extremely confident in his fight ending ability. He threw with a ferocious conviction very few could handle & he could do it for 12 rds, he was a phenomenal athlete, he had a great chin too & when it came to sweet science he was second to none. Holyfield was a very special fighter n if it wasnt for him Tysons second reign mighta lasted into the 2000s, although I think 1992-1996 Riddick Bowe woulda been a hell of a problem for him.

Whitherspoon was a highly seasoned amateur & by then he had already been in with Holmes n nearly beat him, had beaten Bonecrusher & was a reigning 2 x World Champ. Bottom line, he was just way, way ahead of where Bruno was as a boxer, he had paid WAY WAY more dues at a higher level than Bruno n mentally there was no way he was gonna lose in those circumstances. Bruno was about as good as he could have been in the circumstances, it was a 50/50 fight right up until the final exchange, he done well vs a 2 x Champ who was very much in his prime.

At this stage in his career Bruno was at his peak, it’s a shame he came across this world class fast hitting15 round seasoned pro he was never going to beat. In this fight despite losing Bruno looked like a boxer not muscle bound Mr universe and had relatively good head movement, decent combination punches, hooks and upper cuts. He was also relatively quick on his feet, and had decent speed and did shake up world class Terrible Tim . After this fight Bruno went for power and muscle mass and lost most of his boxing technique except for his jab. Bruno for this fight was in the best conditioning he had ever been in and would be ever be in again. Its just a shame he came across Terrible Tim a fighter that had never been down before this fight and to boot ex-sparring partner of Mohammed Ali, otherwise it could have been a different story. Even in this fight Bruno was gassed out in the 11th showing he would always struggle 12 rounds never mind 15. Well done Frank you done it in the end 1995.

Bruno was an embarrassing disappointment to the UK. He lost against 2 bums, and KO'd within 3 rounds against an over the hill Tyson who just came out of prison. Also, let's not forget the Lewis fight in 1993. Yes, Bruno was ahead on points but let's not forget that Lennox hadn't reached his peak yet and the fact that Bruno couldn't take a punch very well. But tbh, I had that fight a draw on my scorecard before the stoppage. Bruno couldn't even hold a major belt. The only time he did was in the Oliver McCall fight, and tbh, he was nearly KO'd in the 11th or 12th round and I bet on any money if it was a 15th rounder, he would of been TKO'd in the 14th round. Even when he managed to beat McCall for the WBC belt, he couldn't even defend it not even once when he fought an over the hill Tyson. In all fairness, Bruno was a brilliant fighter and possibly an elite journeyman and a B level fighter, but was extremely overrated by the British public. He was a paper champion and nothing more. Maybe if he worked on his defence, fought in spurts and paces and was more betterly disciplined, he could of been great for his era, but in the end, he was nothing but a lost talent. The only British Heavyweight that managed to accomplish things and to be underrated is probably Lennox Lewis. In fact he is my favourite fighter and always will be.

I do think Witherspoon could have come in a little better shape but that's history. Bruno is a good boxer for the UK he is the typical stand straightup fighter that is the British fighting style. Bruno really has little power with basic boxing skills and a semi-glass jaw. Bruno should stick to the UK boxing scene where he could become the heavyweight champion but against good world class United States heavyweight contenders he is mince meat. Bruno in my opinion could have built up a much better boxing CV. After this loss he fought mediocrities and half decent fighters in between unsuccessful title shots against Lewis and twice against Tyson. Clearly he was being "well managed" but it would have been nice to be able to look back on a career with a few more top wins than Gerrie Coetzee and Oliver McCall as there were other top contenders around against whom Bruno could and should have won.
