Bulgaria weakened just after the 1994 World Cup. Since then, they never managed to qualify to the knockout stage of both world cup and european champioship, and they took part for the last time in 1998 when lost 1-6 to Spain.

This game was blessing for France they managed to rebuild and reach the semi final at the Euro 96 and win the world cup 98 and Euro 2000

France didnt have luck. Thats all. As u can see all the time they were attacking here at yet Bulgarians had two chances and they exploited them 100%. No shame in losing to this generation of Bulgaria either. Anyone could have lost to this Bulgaria. Even Brazil or Italy.

I can't even put words to this. Every time I watch it, I can't help but feel a lot of emotion for Bulgaria. At the same time, I can't imagine what the french players must have felt like after having such an excellent run individually to be chosen for the national team only to be eliminated at the last minute before living their dream of going to the World Cup. Life is so short and some of those players were not chosen for the next World Cup. So they missed their opportunity. Such is the valley of tears called life. May the Lord keep them at peace over this disappointment. He has a reason for everything.

They had been European champions in 1984, reached the WC semis in 1986, they had some taste of success but not this team, even though made of talented players, the PSG-Marseille divide was a major factor...

@@chelsblue7370 That is very interesting! Of course, they won the WC in 1998. Zizi came into the picture in August of 1994 and Henry in 1997. That duo was unstoppable in the 1998 WC. France also played the 1998 WC at home, which helped a lot.

After this match wherever a bulgarian club met a french referee they were on the loosing side. The first one was the semifinal on the WC 94 with Italy. The whole world saw the hand of Costacurta in the penalty area but not the french referee. Otherwise we would have to watch a Bulgaria - Brazil final and then who knows?!

Помню тот отбор, французам надо было в двух матчах, Израиль и Болгария, матчи дома, набрать одно очко! А сборная у Франции тогда тоже золотое поколение было! Папен, Кантона, Жинола!!!!!! И вот сначала они Израилю проиграли, ну а потом этот матч, у болгар тоже чудо команда собралась! Насколько помню, парни почти на последних минутах гол забили и забил если не изменяет память Эмил Костадинов! Ну и в США они отлично играли, помню Лечкова, Михайлова, Балакова, ну и великий Христо Стоичков!!!!!

Gran gol de Kostadinov y medio gol de Penev que hizo un pase milimetrico y le puso la pelota a Kostadinov como como si fuese con la mano. Kostadinov no dudo y definio con sangre fria. Tambien con complicidad del penultimo defensor frances (no Blanc) que debio marcar a Kostadinov en vez de tratar interceptar la pelota. Kostadinov le gano la posicion y pudo definir antes de la llegada de Blanc. Golazo.

In the qualifixations 1 Sweden 2 Bulgaria, both did 1/2 final so this group was indeed very strong.

Unbelievable, crazy insane ,one of the happiest moments in my life, I was only 17 and playing football myself, but that was incredible. Anyone who experienced that is verry lucky for the chance to see the Golden generation in action. Happy to be able to watch Stoichkov, Penev, Kostadinov and Trifon Ivanov live in many matches, when they were part of CSKA. Very sad of what Bulgarian football became.

Gérard Houiller m'avait tellement énervé d'accuser Ginola comme un lâche. Un entraîneur ne salit pas son joueur dans des moments comme ça. Ginola en a payé le prix fort et c'est injuste. Il méritait tellement de faire parti de l'équipe victorieuse de 1998. Il était très bon.

La Coupe du monde 98 a été acheté, et dire le contraire c'est être de mauvaise foi et absolument rien connaître au football. La plus grande équipe du Brésil de l'histoire se fait battre 3-0 par une équipe de bras cassé ! Ronaldo et son équipe qui était en mode bulldozer tout au long de la compétition ont étonnamment été transparent en finale, c'est à peine si ils couraient.

França e Dinamarca. Duas seleções quase classificadas para a Copa de 94 e deixaram a vaga escapar no último jogo. Mas a França perdeu a vaga para a Bulgária, era uma seleção histórica, muito, mas muito forte. Já a Dinamarca perdeu pra Espanha e perdeu a vaga para a Irlanda.

Sempre tive curiosidade de saber como uma seleção forte como a frança ficou de fora da copa 94, a seleção francesa sempre foi uma seleção forte mesmo antes de ser campeão mundial. Porém nesse jogo teve pela frente a melhor Bulgária da história, Stoichkov era um fora de série e ainda tinha bons jogadores ofensivos. Não a toa a Bulgária chegou a semifinal de 94 eliminando os atuais campeões Alemanha ( que tinha uma seleção bastante envelhecida). E creio que a França perdeu a vaga na partida contra 🇮🇱 pois esse Bulgária seria um jogo complicado de qualquer forma. Abraços do 🇧🇷.

A França antes não era uma seleção forte era apenas mediana ! sua melhor colocação tinha sido um 3° lugar na copa de 1958 com a geração de koppa e Fontaine. Só começou a aparecer para o cenário mundial aparti 1984 quando ganhou seu primeiro título a Euro de 84 antes disso tinha voltado a copa depois de 20 anos fora , fez uma copa pífia em 1978 e só mostrou algum 1982 com a geração de Platini e cia ficando em 3° lugar de novo ! na realidade a seleção francesa so passou a ser uma seleção de primeira prateleira depois de 1998 quando ganhou seu primeiro título mundial adotando metade dos descendentes de africanos vestindo sua camisa azul , antes disso a França era pífia só vivia de rompantes quando surgia uma boa geração.

Good thing France recovered after that but historically France is very inconsistent. 94 didn’t qualify then won in 98 then got eliminated in the first round in 2002 then reached the final in 2006 then got eliminated in the first round again in 2010 and won last World Cup. Let’s see what they come up with this year

не пори херь. 1. здесь чернокожие тоже есть 2. в 1999 году, всего на 6 лет позже этого матча было уже 9(!) черных. У меня фото в журнале есть. Так что этот процесс уже давно. 3. Сейчас в принципе белых тоже немало во Франции 4. Если уж ты хотел сказать про "белых в сборной Франции" тогда бы уж 1984 вспомнил максимум )

Сколько? Да и сейчас они в клубах. В основном, у бомжей. Что им платят для храбрости - загадка. Многие из клубов рпл сделали ноги

Without home advantage I doubt! They had great team (minus a quality center forward), but so did Brazil, Holland and Croatia. It is little things like home advantage and luck (penalty shoot out against Italy that could have gone the opposite direction) that makes the difference. Personally, I would have loved to see Ginola and Cantona playing in 1998 W. Cup, but France manager had different ideas!

I will never forget this match...I stayed for a very long time e With sickness and looking very sad....and one of my uncle that was in mission in Bulgaria was laughing to me and my friends....he was treated so good Bulgaria that he fall himself as a true Bulgarian
