@@FOUDEFOOT85 I think they are close. Bulgaria had that one run at WC, but Romania was more consistent. They went past group stage in multiple occasions both at WC and EURO. They beat some great teams too. They are also much better at club football.

That match didn't let us to see Papin and Cantona, in USA 94; however, we saw the great Bulgaria with Stoichkov, Kostadinov, Balakov, Letchkov, Ivanov, and Mikhailov. It was meant to be!

J'avais 10 ans à l'époque et je m'en souviens encore 😫 et oui la Bulgarie avait une merveilleuse équipe de guerrier. C'est ce qu'il manquait à l'équipe de France de cette époque malgré le talent. J'avais eu beaucoup de peine par la suite pour David Ginola quand tout le monde lui était tombé dessus.

Yes, very sadly Trifon Ivanov passed away in 2016 aged 50. The best centre-back we've had, he was our iron man. We were joking about him 'Trifon is so tough, he eats coal for breakfast". Stoichkov did an jubilee match for its own 50th birthday, where he paid tribute to his fallen friends Trifon Ivanov, and to the legendary Johan Cruyff - who also passed away in 2016, two months before the match. It was a touching tribute. Saludos amigos 🇧🇬🍻

Kostadinov delivered under a huge pressure. Last seconds of the game. He had very little time (if you look closely you can see that Blanc came very close to stop or deflect his shot with a desperate tackle) and very little space, but still he managed to score under the cross bar with an incredibly beautiful shot, taken from a difficult angle. Bulgaria proved the following year to fully deserve to be at the World Cup.

On one hand it was heartbreaking for France, but on the other - Bulgaria was really strong back than, which they proved during the final tournament. It was a bit like England who was stunned by Poland in WC 1974 qualification, but then Poland went on to become 3rd. So not only this result enabled Bulgaria to get their best World Cup result ever, but also maybe created perfect circumstances for France to rebuild their team and prepare to the 1998 World Cup in the best way possible.

J'avais 10 ans. J'ai pleuré toutes les larmes de mon petit corps ce soir-là.

One of greatest national teams football matches of all time!

I remember this so well. It's interesting that Bulgaria went on to perform so well in the world cup in the USA. A similar thing happened in 1973, when Poland nipped in to qualify for the 1974 world cup ahead of England....and were very close to reaching the final.

Kostadinov paved the way for Bulgaria to the World Cup finals in the US in 1994. And he did that against the favoured French team in an away match - in the 90th minute. That was something for football history. I do not recall anything similar by the great Lionel Messi...

As a French I still remember vividly these last seconds... Why did Ginola not just keep the ball? Anyways, it was an amazing Bulgarian team, they deserved to go to the World Cup and did very well there.

Bulgaria qualified and made it to the World Cup semifinals, by far the greatest performance for the Bulgarian football. But after that, Bulgaria qualified only once again to the World Cup and twice to Euro. France on the other hand, won twice the World Cup(1998 & 2018), played another final in 2006, won Euro in 2000, and played another Euro final in 2016, not to mention they never missed again a final tournament.

@@Varaughe Kind of mirrors what my own Romania did: since 1994 quarter finals, 3 more Euros and only another world cup. These countries went through very difficult social and economic changes and sports have collapsed there. These use to be strong Olympic countries as well.

En même temps ça fait un million d'année. Faut oublier à un moment donné, on s'en fout de tout ça maintenant. Et la guéguerre par médias interposés Houiller-Ginola pathétique nous a assez saoulés comme ça...jusqu'à la disparition d'Houillier. J'ajoute que de toute façon, c'était mérité: 1- c'est pas interdit de défendre, 2- il'y a les autres matchs à chier avant ça, 3- tellement d'anti-jeu et de manque de fair-play avant et dans la rencontre que c'est mieux comme ça. Les bulgares n'ont rien volés, contrairement à la France face à l'Irlande pour la CM 2010...

When you put your qualification at stake against Bulgaria, for the last match, you are in big trouble. The mistake was not to lose to this Bulgarian team, that was very good, but against Israël before. This is one of the most traumatic event in french football with France - Germany 1982. Nothing much to say here. Kostadynov was brilliant that day and Bulgaria deserved the qualification.

I remember this game like it was yesterday.As a bulgarian,I can tell you we lost hope by the end and all in the sudden ........France out from the World Cup!What a team France was back then!?Some of the best players in the world!But I think we did them a big favor.4 years later they won the World Cup and dominated the world of football till now!After that shocker,France won two times the World Cup,lost one final on penalties (could have been 3 times),one European Cup,and lost one EC final!I think they are so over this game :)

I am French so I remember like it was yesterday also:-), in fact, this group was very strong Sweden finish first and Bulgaria second and both reached the semi-final in wc94, I agree this loss was a benefit for France who won the world cup 4 years later.

Yes, the French team needs traumatic losses to win afterwards : WC 1982 : traumatic loss against Germany, wins Euro 1984 WC 1993 : traumatic loss against Bulgaria, wins WC 1998, Euro 2000 and reach WC final in 2006 WC 2010 : cataclysmic crisis in the squad, long restructuration and finally reached Euro final in 2016, won WC 2018 and reached WC final in 2022 So thanks Bulgaria for traumatically spanking the French team !

As half-bulgarian and 14-15 yo boy at the time, those few years of Bulgarian football peak are written in my mind forever and are one of the most emotional sport related experiences I ever had. Bulgaria played exeptionally well at the world cup and proved it was not a coincident they qualified. And in the end everything came toghether for France too, few years later as they climed to the top. And that is the beauty of sport in a nutshell. The victory tastes so much better, knowing you went through the cruelest defeats and toughest tests before.

France had a great team too, they would have eliminated Bulgaria had they not slacked off against Israel the game before. Sweden was also in the same group and they were excellent too, reaching the semifinals in 94, it was the group of death in uefa that time.

France was a huge favorites before the match and expect easy qualify after missed the previous wc in italy 4 years before. Surprisingly Bulgaria had won and qualified with sweden from this group. The golden cherry on the cake is fact that both countries (bul,swe) almost played in wc 94 final game :DDDDD

After not qualifying twice, France changed everything in their football system from the youth selection and training stage, and this paid very well. We should do the same in Italy now, but I expect we'll never do that.

except for Penev yes :). Letckov would be way higher up the rankings than Penev. He didn't contribute much of anything especially since he was center forward

weahhhh,what a night that wednesday night,Portugal was also in San Siro playing with scare,even the Portuguese commentar said,theirs exteriors forces here preventing Portugal to go to USA,what days those were,but thats how it goes,i neve rheld hard feelings against Italia,their actually my favorite team after Portugal,but fuckin Switzerland got in between the 2.

Joao Rebelo yes, but even if Portugal had tied the game, no matter that Italy, Switzerland and Portugal were going to be with 15 points, with the goal difference, Italy and Switzerland were still going to be ahead of Portugal. Portugal needed to win its last match in Italy :).

This is the dark age of French football. In 1990 and 1994,France failed to qualify for the world cup for two consecutive terms. This really broke many people's hearts at that time...However, we can't deny that Bulgaria did very well in that year and reached the last four in the 1994 World Cup, they deserved the honour....
