FOX 13 News 360: Controversy behind wild horse roundups

Wild horses live all over the western United States, including parts of Utah so remote that many people have never even seen one.
But there are thousands - and by some assessments, too many.
So, how many wild horses can the land sustain? And how - or when - should humans intervene? We looked at the different viewpoints in this in-depth “360” report.
On July 13, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) kicked off what they call a "wild horse gather" in Tooele County.
They invited us to observe, along with advocates for wild horses who are often at odds with the BLM.

Are you aware that a wild horse population doubles every five years? it takes nearly 100 acres to provide food for one horse in the west.

Unfortunately as much as this is something you feel like you need to monitor. Wild animals have been around for millions and thousands of years in these exact conditions with drought and over population. The fact with these conditions they are still around says something. Just with wildfires were preventing these things from performing its natural behavior witch can disrupt the eco system and climate witch has nothing to do with climate change in this sense.

And this is a conflict that I have because I am a huge Horse person but you have to understand yes wild animals and horses have been around since the Don of their evolution but horses were never native to America or southern America the first horses were brought over by Spanish conquistadors in the south the horses that escaped from ranches in from boats and eventually when there was no need for the warhorses a lot of them were just let go some of the herd stayed down south but a lot of them migrated north towards the plains there’s a lot of horses out there andSadly the industrialization of America is forcing their land to be smaller and smaller which creates more and more of an issue

The argument FOR necessity of management is a distractive argument. A large corral with hay and water is one much cheaper way; they get used to using it. Then can be caught in smaller corrals. With caring observers the essential bonding groups can be kept so the social support so necessary to horse well being are not totally disrupted.

Voluntary reductions in livestock grazing (4:55) don't change land-use plans. When conditions improve, grazing will resume at normal levels. The area can support more wild horses, but those resources have been assigned to the ranchers.

Visit a BLM corral. There are entire pans full of foals. Gathers are done in late summer so most foals, who are normally born in the spring, handle gathers well. A few of the rare late summer foals MAY have trouble, but those foals are at greater risk of death from the droughts and from the upcoming harsh winters as well. The time for gathers is chosen in part to be the best time for the foals.

To everyone who says "leave the horses be" Or "Let them be free" you need to go out there and see them starving to death. Yearlings, pregnant mares, old horses, all starving because they don't have enough food. They don't have enough food because there's too many horses out there. If you didn't know these animals are not actually wild, but they are feral. They were not originally here, and OUR own people put them out long ago, they survived, bred with the Spanish horses and BAM Mustangs.. So please do your research before you start saying "let them stay free or w/e". I love horses very much and personally train Mustangs as well as domesticated horses. You sitting there behind your keyboard trying to shame others who are ACTUALLY trying to help the horses is not helping.
