    Every time Foster shakes hands with Dean after his routine, there's always this look of admiration / respect / appreciation / friendship that's so touching. Dean knew he was lucky to have Foster on the show, and Foster knew he was lucky to have such a wonderful opportunity to reach such a large audience.

    Foster Brooks, the greatest drunk who never took a drink. This is when comedy was worth watching and no one got offended as everyone knew it was just in good fun and what fun it was.

  • @capblood3046

    @capblood3046

    Well, he took quite a few in earlier life. part of how he played it so well afterward. Sad you find comedy today not worth watching-there is much that is brilliant, if it's mores are not of another time. Yes, 'good fun' in these roasts was good fun-but they are the root of much of the rather mean streak of today's comedy, so we cannot absolve it completely as being removed from that evolution. And, having had a mean alcoholic father who was definitely NOT funny, Foster's brilliant comedy is also a bit painful to watch. What in past years might be made fun of ain't funny today for many good reasons-'good clean fun' of yesterday included laughing and making fun of substance abuse, women, race, and religion; for good reason not tolerated today...

    @@waterheaterservices You might be surprised to know, I agree with your disdain for our 'politically correct' censorship on humor today. Laughing at ourselves is, to my mind, one of the bastions of a democratic spirit. Still does not make insults of race, drug abuse, women, fat, etc. the right, or necessary, thing to do. The 'correct approved thinking' that allowed abuse in the past (fat is funny, drunks are hilarious...) is well and truly gone. We can navigate the future without such insensitivity excused as humor...

    What kept me coming back to watching these Roasts was Foster Brooks. I fell in love with his style of comedy because nobody was doing what he was at his level. He mastered his style of funny tipsy drinker. I LOVED how Dean Martin used Foster in every Roast he was a part of... He encorperated Foster Into whoever was being roasted as if he was a personal friend manager, boy scout leader, campaign leader for a senator.. and in this case personal physician of the Great Jackie Gleason. He could do it all. It was amazing to watch him work the audience into a frenzy of uncontrolled laughing along with Dean and the countless other great comedians and actors who graced the stages on those special nights of Roasting the stars. What a great Era of Comedy in those years. I miss those days immensely. 😪 they were one of a kind and special.

    Every few generations will have what is looked upon as a golden age of comedy. The silent comedians are considered a golden age. The physical talent of comedians such as Chaplin, Arbuckle, Keaton and Lloyd will probably never return. Milton Berle, Jack Benny and others of that period were a different golden age. Then came the age of Martin and Lewis, Peter Sellers. Foster Brooks would be from the 1970s.golden age. What the previous golden ages had was a limited arena where the best were concentrate in one area. Right now, we have an overabundance of comedians and different venues to see them.

    On the old "Jackie Gleason Show" from the early '50's, he always started the show by coming onstage with a cup of "coffee". After Gleason died, some of the production people from the show said that the cup was full of straight rum. What a fun place that must have been. He had a reputation of never rehearsing a scene after he read the script, just to get the gist of it. He thought on his feet and the other actors had to follow his lead. It was live television back then. No retakes. Comic genius.

    Frank Guerrero When Foster was just starting his career, Steve Allen had him on his show. Steve's wife, Jayne Meadows, had not seen Foster yet and didn't know he was a comedian. Steve told her he was a scientist coming on the show for a serious discussion. Everyone in the group was in on the joke except Jayne, and when Foster appeared to be falling down drunk, she was aghast. They kept the camera on her the whole time to get her reaction, and it was hilarious.
