    Very solid film. I've been getting more of my friends who I raced mx/sx with into F1 with me. You can really geek out over the technology and the drivers(some)are interesting characters. Plus F1 has it's own little soap opera just like other large professional sports. Anyway, I sent a link to your channel so my buddies are in the know and ready for the new season. Nice job, thumbs up and subbed now.

    @@soholmgaming overall, tyre wear refers to the gradual wearing of the tyre through use under normal circumstances, where tyre degradation refers more specifically to defects that form in the tyres due to abnormal conditions, like blisters due to overheating, or flat spots due to lockups. Mostly though, these terms are used interchangeably and that's fine.

    All you NEED to know to watch your first F1 race - main points in *bold* 1. *F1 is a multinational motor racing series that takes place across 22 races in 22 countries.* Each race has a different amount of laps (times you go around the track) but each race must be at least 305 kilometres long and can not last more than 2 hours. 2. *There are 10 teams, each with 2 drivers, making a total of 20 cars.* Both cars on each team have the same livery (the paint and stickers) except the number on the car is specific to each driver.i 3. *Drivers are competing to win the Driver's Championship, whilst the teams are competing to win the Constructors Championship.* 4. *Points are awarded to the drivers who finish in the top 10 at the end of each race.* The winner gets the most points while 10th place gets the least. The driver who gets the fastest lap during the race gets an extra 1 point, but they only get the point if they finish in the top 10. The points won by both drivers from each team are added together and go toward their team's points in the Constructors Championship. 5. At the end of the year, after all 22 races, *the driver with the most points wins the Drivers Championship* and the *team with the most points wins the Constructors Championship.* The driver who wins the Drivers Championship is also allowed to use the number 1 as their race number the following season. Money is awarded to teams depending on the order they finish in the championship, with the winner getting the most and last place getting least. (Some teams like Ferrari get "Historical payments" at the end of each year because they have been in the sport for so long.) 6. *"F1" is short for "Formula 1."* The formula is the set of regulations (like a recipe) that the teams have to follow when building their car. There are several different championships that use the formula system, such as F2 and F3. F1 is the pinnacle, fastest and most expensive of these. 7. *The position a driver starts each race in is decided by Qualifying.* This happens the day before a race. Drivers try and get the fastest time around the race track. Whoever is fastest gets to start the race from 1st position, this is known as Pole position. The second fastest driver starts in second and so on. 8. *Modern F1 cars are fitted with a DRS system to help them overtake.* The wings on the front and rear of F1 cars are like upside down airplane wings. Instead of pushing a plane in to the sky, they push the car in to the road, meaning it sticks to the road and can go round corners very fast. However, wings can act a bit like sails on a ship and slow a car down in a straight line because they catch all the air and add drag. All current F1 cars are fitted with a DRS (Drag Reduction System). When a driver uses DRS it makes one of the rear wings go horizontal, so it stops pushing the car in to the ground and is less draggy) which makes the cars go quite a bit faster in a straight line. At certain straight parts of each track there are 'DRS Zones' (between one and three of them depending on the track) where drivers can press a button to use their DRS to go even faster and try to overtake the person in front of them. However, they can only use their DRS if they are within 1 second of the person in front of them. DRS was added to F1 cars because it is hard for F1 cars to drive really close behind each other because of all the turbulent air coming off the car in front, so it can be very difficult to overtake the car infront. DRS helps get around this problem by making the car behind in a close fight slightly faster than the car in front. 9. *There are 7 types of tyres used in F1.* 5 of them are used when the track is dry. Then there is an "Intermediate" tyre for when the track is a little bit wet, and a "Wet" tyre for when the track is very wet. The 5 dry tyres vary from very soft to hard. Soft tyres make the car stick the road meaning the car can go it's fastest when using them. However soft tyres wear down quickly so they can't be used for very long. Hard tyres are the opposite, they arent as fast as the soft but they last longer. The different tyres are called "compounds," eg. The hard compound, the Soft compund, the Wet compound. 10. At each race Pirelli (the company who make all the tyres for F1) chose 3 of the 5 types of tyres that they think suit that specific race track. Some tracks make tyres wear quickly, some the opposite. *Every driver has to use two of the three types of tyres during a race.* This rule is cancelled if it is raining and teams have to put Wet or Intermediate tyres. 11. During races *flags are used by marshalls to communicate with drivers.* Marshalls are volunteers who stand next to the track to help make sure the race goes smoothly. There are a number of different flags, but the most common are: - *Yellow flag:* waved if there is an incident on track to warn drivers (for example if a piece of a car has broken off and is on the track.) When drivers see this they must slow down a little bit. If two yellow flags are waved by one marshall that means the incident is more severe and drivers should be extra careful. - *Green Flag:* these are waved when the track is clear to let drivers know that any previous incidents have been cleared up and they can return to normal racing speed. - *Red flag:* this means the race is being stopped (usually if there has been a particularly bad crash that will take a long time to clean up.) - *Blue flag:* this are waved at a driver if he is being "lapped" by a car that is ahead of him, telling him to let the driver behind past. Being "lapped" or "lapping" is when a driver is so fast they go all the way around the track and come back up behind slower cars who are actually behind them in the race. The slower cars are lapped when the fast car overtakes them. - *SC:* this stands for Safety Car. The Safety Car comes out if there is an incident on track that needs clearing up by Marshalls. It drives around the tack slowly, with all the F1 cars in a line behind it until the incident is cleared. Then it goes back in, and the driver in first position then decides when to start the race. - *Black flag:* waved at a driver telling them they are disqualified from the race. Is waved if they are driving dangerously or are causing danger to other drivers. - *Chequered flag:* this is waved at the end of the race to signify the race is now over. Once waved all cars must complete the lap they are on and then stop. 12. At the end of the race the *drivers who finish in 1st, 2nd and 3rd all go on to the podium* and receive trophies and a bottle of champaigne. The winner gets the biggest trophy and 3rd gets the smallest. Being in the top three is known as being "on the podium" and is a big deal to drivers and their teams. some drivers go their whole career and never get on the podium. There are always more details to learn about F1 as you become a bigger fan, that's what makes the sport so fun, there's always more to learn, but to get started that list of 12 is all you need to know to enjoy your first F1 race. (There are a few answers to questions new fans have asked in the replies below, so if you have a question it might have been answered there, but feel free to ask anything that you want below.) There are a few channels which are great for explaining all the different parts of F1 in simple videos here on KZread, including Cranky Yankee! 1. Chain Bear (has weekly videos on all the main parts of F1) 2. Marc Priestley F1 Elvis (ex-Mclaren pit crew, weekly Q&A and explainer vids) 3. THE RACE (motorsports news channel with with discussions about current F1 issues) 4. Formula 1 (the official F1 KZread channel, has become a great source of fun and interesting videos about the sport, races and drivers) Some of the questions that have been answered in the responses below: - Do the same 2 drivers represent each team for all of the races in a year? - How does a new F1 driver get selected to drive in F1? - (in 2020) Which drivers haven't been on the podium yet? - Why have Ferrari been struggling recently? - Could the Williams team make a comeback soon? - Does "season" mean "year"? - Is Netflix's F1: Drive to Survive good? - What's the difference between the Virtual Safety Car and the normal Safety Car? - What are the "Historical payments" you mentioned? - Why would Ferrari ever leave F1? - Will the upcoming cost-cap help level the playing field and give us closer racing? - What does GP2 mean? - Does the order of the 22 Grand Prix change each year? - How is the order of the Grand Prix decided each year? - Why do cars go in wavy line sometimes before racing? - Can cars go to the pit anytime they want? - What are crash tactics? - Why Pit during SC / VSC? - What are some of the new rules for 2022?

    I highly suggest watching the older seasons with the V10 cars. Those cars were just masterpieces. Watch the 2005 and 2006 seasons. The title fight between F1's two greatest drivers - Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. Schumacher had won 7 drivers titles, 5 in succession. Alonso and Renault came to challenge that domination. EPIC would be the word to describe those years. If you can only watch one race from that era, its the 2005 San Marino GP.

    What a terrible show about Formula 1, more soap opera/reality TV than sport. Did not even cover Hamilton until the middle of the second season. Didn't interview his dad or showing his family like they did other drivers. Also tried to make it look like Hamilton was a reckless driver causing accidents. Total and complete disrespect. And to top it all off, focused way too much on that stupid egotistical Aussie driver and other second- and third-rate scrubs.

    You are right it's called Dual Axis Steering....but there is technically only one axis. Weather the steering wheel is rotated about the axis or moved along the axis, there is only one axis. If CY wants to call it Dual Access Steering it's sort of makes sense too since now there are now two ways to access the steering of the wheels. Probably a small mistake on CY's part but still another great video!

    ForgedCarbon they still use them. But they just don’t call them hypersoft and ultrasoft. They changed all tire names to c1-c5. Pirelli brings 3 of the 5 tire compounds to each race and they are just referred to as soft medium and hard regardless of what the actual compound is. I do agree they should just use names for each compound like they did before though.

    Hey my dude! Good job per par. Though I am new to the sport myself I am familiar with the procedures part of the sport. I'm not a total motorsports noob. I've watched NASCAR and Indycar for most of my life so I knew a few of the procedures and technicality of the car (Applies more so with Indycars.) The rules is where it gets murky for me and how the stewarding is done. There seems to be massive bias when making decisions on who gets a penalty/how harsh, etc.

  • @CYMotorsport

    @CYMotorsport

    4 жыл бұрын

    We’re all noobs don’t worry about it you know we don’t do that here. I said dual access instead axis system like a freakin idiot in the video haha it’s equally biased as nascar in terms of an agenda. I’ve always wanted to do an overtaking video but I cant. There’s literally too much unsaid. It’s not worth the outcry it’ll get haha . That’s the problem with so much of the rules of F1. And there’s so many opinions. My issue with it all is the most substantial rules we don’t really Know all the time. So much of the car is proprietary so when someone is out of breach, there’s a chance we don’t ever know. They issue what’s called “technical directives”. Or even right this very second the FIA and Ferrari entered a private agreement on a ruling and they chose not to include everyone else in the outcome of their engine investigation. It’s just stuff like that. So then fans are forced to fill in gaps with little to no info. So people will claim Ferrari is getting special treatment. I mean yeah probably but honestly we don’t know. In reality, their engine could be just over the edge but revealing it would give other teams the advantage they paid hundreds of millions to develop. I mean I’d get that. I wouldn’t like it but I understand. That’s actually what I think is happening and that it might even spill into technology for 2021. That’s the only way they’d have the balls to do it like this. So I guess to answer, they are expensive rulings. We’re talking millions on millions with each major outcome. In that sense, it’s almost... understandably political? Idk it’s just not ticky tack political. Everyone is pretty cagey but I feel for good reason

    Hey dude, I recently started following all your videos like the controversies, the different seasons like 2012, the team specific vids like the Ferrari battle and Hamilton and his rival Rosberg. I started following F1, like a lot of people, after the TV show Drive to Survive. I've read a lot for understanding the sport as and when I hear about those things while watching the sport on the weekends. The most confusing thing that I don't get is the allocation of engine parts or PU or other electronics and their importance in F1. How does a team decide to switch to a new PU or any other part and what all penalties to take from it? Here also you explained the tyres a little bit but how does a team decide on strategies for choosing one over other and why do they go for one-stop over two-stop sometimes and change it if a driver had a bad start or even confusingly if a driver from the other team had a good start!!

  • @CYMotorsport

    @CYMotorsport

    4 жыл бұрын

    I’ll be doing a tyre strategy short here soon :) as for PU, they change for two reasons: upgrades or issues. They are set to a number per year they can’t breach. They release car upgrades spread out accordingly. You learn as the season goes so usually the worst version of your car is first. If you spend all your money early and upgrade sure you’ll do well but other teams adapt and will beat you later on. It’s really a timing thing. Which is why winter testing Is so important. And sometimes the Pu, alternator, etc fails. When they upgrade the power unit or change parts on the fly, usually , generally, you get penalized bc you are taking an unplanned advantage it’s presumed. Drive to survive is great but it leaves a lot out. check out my video later today for an in depth look at history!

    @@CYMotorsport Google use KZread as it's incubator of AI technology and big data, given the companies significant knowledge on the subject I don't even believe it works 100%. Have you never seen a "new" video offered to you that you have already watched!!?? They keep embedding new smarts and yet they appear to forget it's emotive connectivity that makes people watch things, something you are very good at...!! For all the smarts and all the data, it only adds value to people if they can interpret something from it. i.e. the decision to watch was already made emotively, the data just supports the decision. The downside is it tries to drive us all into specific areas of interest or opinion, which is why politics is to polarised today...a form of indoctrination. For those of us trying to think laterally for information, you have to logout and come back anonymously.

    1:35, are you sure “2 liter 750cc engines” is correct? Does this mean 2.75 liter?

  • @philrobinson

    @philrobinson

    I thought the exact same! The actual regulations were: 2.0 litre naturally aspirated OR 750cc (0.75 litre) supercharged.

  • @CYMotorsport

    @CYMotorsport

    4 жыл бұрын

    didn't include aspirated or supercharged. goal was to not say anything that would lead to a hung out question except on tyres. I had a feeling I'd lose the audience if I starting dropping jargon that early. are you a new fan? I also made the calculation a new fan wouldn't be interested in engine displacement or the intricacies or strokes. especially considering the next decade capacity increased to 1600cc in F2. battles to fight - this wasn't one.

    @@CYMotorsport You're missing the point... You said it was limited to 2 liter, 750cc engines. An engine cannot be 2 liters and also be 750 cc so by not adding the bit about being N/A or supercharged you just made the whole thing sound really weird... Most people who are going to get into F1 are at least a little bit car fans I would think and more than likely know what Naturally/Normally aspirated is and pretty much everyone knows what a supercharger or turbo is. 2 liter- 2000 cc.. 750 cc -.75 liters, which is why 1000 cc motorcycles are often referred to as liter bikes.

    CrankyYankeeF1 How is aspiration relevant to this question? This seems like a good channel, but now you’re confusing me. This question, which has been asked multiple times, is about an error you made in the conversion from liters to cc regarding engine displacement. That’s my understanding anyways. Am I missing something? Otherwise, good video!

    I follow F1 since I was a child in the 80s because of Fittipaldi, Piquet and Senna who were national heroes at the sport here in Brazil at the time. It's sad that after Senna's death F1 lost its fan base here in Brazil, more due the immense tragedy it was than the lack of good drivers. We had Barrichello and Massa but F1 was never the same for us. Senna's death still hurts us all and makes the sport bring an aura of sadness for most of people here. A sentiment of nostalgia for the great past and "saudade" (the sentiment of missing someone do much) of Senna is present in each F1 old fan here in Brazil. Due to the lack of a Brazilian driver so great as Senna was there's very little fan base here nowadays, unfortunately. F1 has this thing that from time to time there's an dominating driver and team. This also contribute to fans losing interest. That happened to me with Schumacher winning so much, then with Vettel and Hamilton. But I recently discovered that the fun of F1 must be also found at lower positions. The championship leading part is generally the most boring, except when there's a real dispute for the championship. So if someone is winning so much, we should "exclude" then from the equation, then it's start to be fun again. That's exactly what the DTS series does. Very little is talked about Hamilton, they focus on the underdogs and other competitors dramas.
