    I've always wondered why they don't have Indycar style cameras that do a 360 which shows you exactly who is coming up from behind and to the side and then around for the overtake in one smooth shot. It's brilliant for showing speed, and the beauty of an overtake, and who is at fault for what in crashes.

  • @VideoNarstee

    @VideoNarstee

    Please god no! The Indycar 360 cameras get waaaay over used. They're constantly getting twitched and turned needlessly, and end up missing action.

  • @marcorennmaus

    They do have 360 cameras somewhere in the front of the car, but it's not part of the data stream that gets fed into the live broadcast as far as I know. It's main purpose is just for the FIA to document currently. As a result, this camera is for us only visible in special clips they upload later, such as the Verstappen/Hamilton crash at Monza 2021.

  • @nickspriggs2699

    @nickspriggs2699

    Yeah, I'm not a fan of that at all. Half the time it missing the action and you don't get a sense of the cars overall grip and performance because it's always moving. F1 does actually have 360 cameras though, if you check their KZread you can see some footage of them. They just don't spin around

  • @mattamys

    I have a theory as it might be due to a separate part being able to freely move around, which F1 teams could argue is effecting the car's balance - again, this is a completely theory but will investigate!

  • @DanTheStripe

    I really dislike the 360 camera, because they constantly rotate us as a car goes past, meaning it's impossible to establish a shot of how fast the car is actually going.

    I'll be honest it's not the angles that need changing. They need to increase the FOV and shutter speed to give a better sense of speed (and more visibility/less blurriness for the viewer) and also increase the bitrate/quality.

    That's pretty interesting. I'm currently watching the 1987 season and they actually used a rear onboard camera in a similar angle as the one you described in the Brabham of Andrea de Cesaris at least during the Portuguese GP (I think that it was also used in the Spanish GP, but it might be my memory tricking me). Amazing how far RaceCam has come since Channel 7 introduced it in 1979. Back then the camera was huge and was able to be turned 360 deg by the broadcast director. The images from the camera were sent to a helicopter flying overhead then back down to the ground for use by the TV channel.

    For me, those T cams and helmet cams are the best onboard angles. I like how they are testing some new ways to show the tracks as well. Whatch a car coming from behind is kind of useles if we already can see the car in front getting closer and closer from the T-camera in the overtaking car.

    And you can thank the 7 Network Australia who invented what was then "race-cam" in the late 1970s for their broadcast of the Bathurst 1000. It was the first ever live-from-racing-car footage, and it included a remote controlled camera which could swivel, and 2-way audio communication between driver and commentator. Cutting edge stuff for the era! This was pre-WiFi, pre-cellular.

    There's so many good choices for camera placement though, looking at what other series have one. Indycar has had some great ones over the year, the shoulder camera on a speedway was always good since you were at driver's head level,then in the early 2000s we had helmet cams, and now the 360 cameras, the PTZ ones that are always giving great shots. Oh and can we talk about the one at track level looking back from the gearbox I emember from the late 80s/early 90 too, It was fascinating watching just how much the suspension moved around when the car as a whole didn't seem to move that much. I mean. I'll take helmet cam over T-cam any day, I' like more camera choices personally And from tin top/stok cars we've had a front facing suspension that doubled as a brake cam, the foot/pedal cam on road courses pointed at, you guessed it, the pedals, and latterly, helmet cameras, and pit crew cameras too in a lot. NHRA had rear wing mounte cams. Nothing like having nitro flames spitting out on either side of the shot and staring dead ahead at the roll hoop and the quarter mile,then the flames going from barely there to bright as the car launches EDIT: Also forgot the camera on/in the back bumpers too fof various cars, and used for great effect during pittop, too. Also from Indycar, I don't recall if it was just a for the opening lap of the race bit, but they had one on the very tip of the nose. which at Laguna in 94, backfired when Rahal had it on his car, went off, and there went that angle for the rest of the race, it was the same idea as the gearbox camera, just pointed forward. Actually it showed up again, the rear facing one in 2004 when F1 refugee Gaston Mazacane, yes, that one, got into the back of the car ahead under yellow. All that was needed was the AMR team to put a set of shark teeth on that car. Also NASCAR had the pace car camera idea back in the early 90s, it's hown up quite a bit here an there but never for very long, so there's so many notes F1 can take and ry out. I'd love to see a shot of the car in action, with throttle/brake/steering traces between team mates in a ession, sort of thing. I loved, in the Grand Prix games from Geoff Crammond, sitting down, going over the aforementioned traces and working out where I was losing time to everyone else, or whre I was quicker

    Idk the science behind this but since we’re on the topic, why is it not possible to film races in a way that captures the speed of the cars? I know it’s probably something about frames…? But speaking as a new fan it was a really weird disconnect realising these cars are actually going well over 200km/hr. Could there not be more static shots that demonstrate the speed? Cause I feel like that’s a key part of… racing. Just wondering, super excited about these new angles though :)

Or pretend they are sitting in the cockpit of the cars. I can't believe it hasn't been done yet, i would gladly pay heard earned cash to watch sporting events this way. Sit ringside on a boxing match for example is another idea, or have cameras mounted on roller coasters. The ideas are limitless. it just constantly send out a 360 video that anyone can join in and view.

    They should change the field of view and not have it as such a wide shot with so much of the halo. The early 2000s cars looked so fast because there wasnt such a stationary object in the screen

    The camera angle not being perfectly aligned with the car tilts me so much. I can't understand why in pre season they use the very nice centered camera and during the seaon the offset camera is back, it's just stupid. I don't care if that affects aerodynamics or not, F1 is a sport made for TV, so give the viewers the best posible experience FFS.
