that's because he has nothing good to say about it. he got taken for a ride and dumped and they didn't apologize or anything he was used as fresh meat and discarded when slightly out of date. they need to keep touring and making the $ off of randy's material he got used for that and they paid him squat. take a look at how he acts about it hes not happy at all and really never discusses it like it was some great memory more like its just a pain in the ass to have to keep talking about it like it interests him hes probably bored as fuck about the whole affair I would be. sharon and ozzy still aren't square with him i wouldn't be happy either.

Jake E Lee is my second favorite guitar player of all time, behind Jimmy Page. His band, Badlands is my second favorite behind Led Zeppelin. And that, with only 3 albums! His riffs, chops and phrasing are so unique. It's difficult to figure out his solos because he breaks rules of theory that if anyone else did it, it wouldn't work. But Jake can build psychedelic phrases that sound insane, intense, emotive, passionate and inspired concurrently. His contribution to his generation is invaluable 🤘

The only difference between Randy and Jake's playing is in body style. Jake did alot of actual physical interpretation of the music while Randy just basically stood there focusing alot more than Jake, who moved his entire body to the sound alot. That distracted from his concentration somewhat. Randy had him on that. Randy was classically trained from age 7. Who can compete with someone who lived guitar their entire life? Jake was the only player I know of though who could step in and keep Ozzy and Sharon's machine alive. Jake is a great guitarist in his own right and even more thrilling that Randy to watch, and that's saying alot.

Brad K, you don’t replace a pope who dies. You choose a new one. If a man’s wife dies and he remarried, he didn’t replace her. He replaces her if they get divorced. Nobody could replace Randy Rhoads. Ozzy had a different sound after Randy died. Do you have kids or even pets. You don’t replace a pet that dies. You may choose to get a new one, but you don’t replace the pet. Ozzy’s band had an opening that needed to be filled due to death. No one quit or died. Replacing means getting the same or better because you no longer want the original. Replacing is a choice. You replace a refrigerator you no longer like. If your refrigerator quits working, you don’t have a functioning refrigerator, so you buy a new one. You don’t replace it.

Doesn’t surprise me George didn’t work out. His playing is SO stylized and unique it isn’t really in the cards for Lynch to cop other guys’ licks and solos. Having said this, Jake really took to the gig, considering his natural stylistic inclinations are quite different from those normally associated with Ozzy. Of course, he did cut his teeth in the burgeoning LA metal scene, so that approach wasn’t alien to him. If Lee had recorded nothing else, “Bark at the Moon”, the song, would have cemented his legend. That tune is a goldmine of riffs and soloing.

Randy Rhoads is the person I most credit for helping me to decide between drums, or guitar; I heard Ozzy's "Over the Mountain" and asked who that was playing guitar, and I had found my mentor. Therefore, I scrutinized Jake E. Lee's playing unfairly in my opinion; it's unfair to expect anyone to be as good as Randy Rhoads. Moreover, though Jake E. Lee does not command the power of Music Theory and Composition to the degree Randy did, e.g, Jake E. Lee says on this recording "I Don't Know" and "Crazy Train" are similar songs, they're both in "A.", etc. which is not true with regard to key signatures in musical notation. In college I learned in first year music theory (Classical Guitar) to commit the circle of fifths and fourths to memory by their key signatures, sharps, flats, enharmonic equivalents, etc. It's true that "Crazy Train" is written in the key of three sharps = A Major f# minor. However, "I Don't Know" is written in the key signature of zero sharps and zero flats = C Major a minor. Therefore, though one is dronning on an underlying "A" tone/note, one is thinking very differently with regard to open strings, and scales. Therefore, Jake E. Lee was lacking in his lead guitar playing prowess when compared to Randy Rhoads who was a loving student of musical theory which shows to this day in his musical thinking. For me, Jake E. Lee's songwriting ability on a whole, and his rhythm playing has always been his greatest strength and he's no slouch on leads either. "Bark at the Moon" is a metal anthem along with "Rock 'n' Roll Rebel", and "Shot In The Dark" is one of Ozzy's biggest commercial successes. Personally, I liked tunes like "Now You See It, Now You Don't", "Slow down" and "Never" which has a real "Ratt" feel to it, which is very cool. This recording helps clear a lot of things up for me about the rumours about how things went down, and I believe Jake E. I thought Gillis left over some conflict with Sharron and I thought Lynch failed at his first attempt to gain a nod from Ozzy. I'm not at all surprised to hear that Jake E. Lee was considered all along because he can write a good song with more of a finger on the pulse of what's popular at the time.

@SabuPtolemy My facts pointed out above prove your argument to be wrong. If you state that I'm "wrong" you will need to offer proof (I have already offered proof to the contrary above, just look it up) of why I am wrong, which you have failed to do. I never said Jake E. Lee knew nothing about theory, I said he was wrong about these key signatures (fact, not opinion) and that he is not as learned in theory as Rhoads was which is also a fact.

More specifically, "I Don't Know" is written in C natural major (i.e. the Ionian mode)/A natural minor (Aeolian mode), while "Crazy Train" is in F# Aeolian/A Ionian. But you're correct - the two songs are in very different tonalities.

@SabuPtolemy As a lead guitarist who's been playing since 1985 and who knows quite a bit of theory, I have to side with David here - Jake is clearly not as knowledgeable about music theory as Randy was, but he's a great player nonetheless.

  • @ScotchmanGass

@@hinjurock Exactly! This is the brilliance of Rhoads' theory in crafting these two pieces of music. In "I Don't Know" Rhoads decides to bring about a very strong, almost Ionian feel to a song written in a minor key signature as he employs two note chords with omitted thirds (no 3rds) to also mask their Aeolian tonic in nature, so when he goes to the dominant fifth (G Major) and begins his pentatonic dorian blues attack it makes for a very refreshing and unexpected direction which I love hearing, and playing. In "Crazy Train" (NFL Kickoff Anthem) written in A Major, f# minor, or three sharps, Randy opens with a bass line on a dominant fifth (E Major) and later after playing the famous riff rides the Ionian tonic A while playing yet more no third chords afterward lending the overall feel of the rhythm to an Aeolian vibe.

@SabuPtolemy Actually, it was Jake E. Lee, and Pythagoras who presented the "facts" above in the video (a minor=no sharps or flats, and A Major=three sharps are two very different key signatures) and in the standard written musical language of notation. It was I who pointed these facts out, and it was you who failed to notice either. Also, I saw Jake E. Lee at Arco Arena on the "Ultimate Sin" tour; Jake E. Lee rocks! However, he does not play Randy's music the way Randy did, so I know you are wrong about that as I experienced it for myself. Zakk Wylde also plays Randy's music very differently from the way Randy played it; I have seen Zakk (who surely kicks ass) twice playing for Ozzy, and all of that harmonic pitch squeal shit gets boring as fuck the first ten-thousand times around, and I'm pretty sure Randy wouldn't like so much of that in his music, though I could be wrong. Goodbye you ignorant dolt. Cheers!

OOPS!!! Didn't see your comment till now.... I just posted this above... I'll repost here, if you don't mind: And, as for Lynch's 2nd time he was up for Ozzy... and essentially had the gig... I interviewed George a few times for Guitar One magazine (between 1998-2005), and in one of them he mentioned something about needing to get a side job as a truck driver, because after he (apparently) got the Ozzy gig, there was no $$ coming in yet... He had to CUT HIS HAIR to get the trick driver job... Ozzy saw George and asked "Why'd you cut your hair?!" and was pissed... This coincides with when Jake showed up at SIR, or wherever the rehearsal "audition" was Jake refers to in this interview. An extra detail to toss int the pot! (Maybe someone already wrote this in earlier comments though.)
