Jake E Lee Interview Part 1

Part 1. Jake E Lee joins the program for a wide ranging conversation that covers everything from Ozzy wanting to write songs at 3:00 in the morning, Phil Soussan conspiring against him, not bonding with Ozzy, the Badlands manager trying to blackmail him, how he found out Ray Gillan was sick, the modern way of recording an album, Red Dragon Cartels latest record Patina and SOOOOO much more. Just in time for the Holidays, Jake is the gift that just keeps on giving. A fascinating and at times absurd conversation. You may want to relieve yourself before listening. This one is long. Enjoy.

I’ve always said the same thing about Jake. His Rhythm parts are insane. Great solos but it took me longer to learn his rhythm parts than his solos. Bark at the Moon is a perfect example of that. I could never play the last solo bit with my thumb like he does either. Jake, anyone with half a brain knows and knew you wrote that stuff. Ozzy never struck me as a guy that knows a G from an A chord on any instrument.

Jake is the most underrated guitarist of all time, with Badlands being the most underrated band! I recently checked out a video of Ray with Sabbath and OMG is he awesome. Covers Ozzy and Dio and STILL manages to sound like Ray in the process. Ray had my favorite voice in rock, bar none. Pity he died too soon!

Many love Jake E Lee, but in my opinion he is still underrated. He should have been way bigger than he already is. Bark At The Moon album is the album that changed my life back in 1987 at eight years old. It is the album that got me into Hard Rock/Heavy Metal music big time, and it was because of Jake's guitar playing. I love everything that Jake has done, and he is one of the coolest guys ever. Shame on Sharon and Ozzy for screwing Jake over songwriting royalties and for firing him. In my opinion Jake is Ozzy's greatest guitar player, and I love Randy big time.

Jake E Lee is a really cool dude . I read an interview in a guitar magazine years ago , and there was no bitterness and cursing when talking about problems musicians had with Sharon and Ozzy . It's kinda sad it didn't work out because his first major recording and touring was with Ozzy . And he did a great job . He was still just a kid it seemed . Totally naive it seemed . Then just recently Ozzy claimed Jake was trying to take control of him . Ridiculous . Again , just a nice guy .

I was a huge fan of Rhoads and I'll admit I never paid a lot of attention to Jake at the time. I was familiar enough with Bark at the Moon, but had mostly moved on from Ozzy. My band recently decided to try BATM, as we already do a bunch of the Rhoads tunes. Wow, I gotta say, that tune is super fun to play and really tough to get right. I'm listening to a lot of Badlands and Red Dragon Cartel now and Jake is a monster player! Lots of tasteful shredding, great compositions that really showcase his version of the SoCal sound of the 80's.

At about 5:40 Jake mentions that his style was too American for Dio and his rhythm playing was too busy. That's spot on. I always felt that Ronnie wanted the guitar to be subordinate to his vocal dynamics. He didn't like very groovy rhythms. He also spent a number of years playing with Blackmore in Rainbow and Iommi in Sabbath. Now, Tony is a very groovy player, and he had the upper hand in Sabbath. But I think Ronnie got the idea that a weaker style of rhythm playing, like Ritchie's, was more complimentary to his vocal style and let him be the star of the show. Although Holy Diver has some groovy rhythms I can't say that of any other Dio album. It's all middle of the road horse riding.

George Lynch wasn’t in Dokken in 1979 when Randy got the Ozzy gig. Greg Leon was Dokken’s guitarist and they did do a small tour of Germany. Leon left Dokken at the end of 1979 to take over Randy’s spot in Quiet Riot and George took over Randy’s spot as a guitar teacher at Randy’s mom school. Jake always tells the story wrong. George did get the gig over Jake but then cut his hair short and had the two tone color which Sharon hated so Ozzy ended up giving Jake the job instead even though he screwed up his audition by confusing parts of crazy train and I don’t know. Fact.

I've read elsewhere that RR disliked the older material, but I've often wondered whether a guy like him, Jake Lee or George Lynch couldn't have found a creative way to 'reboot' some of those classics. Kick-starting them from the 70's into the 80's with up-tempo, pedal tone rhythms, and shredding new solos. Would the songs sustain that kind of a make-over? or would it just be a waste of time. Loved this interview! thanks for posting. I have tried and failed to play Bark at the Moon, the 24'th note tremolo picking and the fingerspan reach required for that outro lick are far beyond what my ordinary hand is capable of, but I listen to the recording and it sounds so easy.

I personally always thought that Randy's death wasn't probably "accident"... He wanted out of the band, he revived Ozzy's career, they didn't know how lucky they woukd get, AGAIN, finding Jake, so i'm sure Sharon was concerned about the money... After what Bob Daisley wrote in his book, with Ozzy punching Randy in the face when he knew he wanted out, and Sharon changing Rhoads's contract moments after his death, everything really doesn't sound right, who knows...
