Former media executive has a new calling: saving donkeys and helping them heal

Reevaluating his life in the midst of the pandemic, a former media executive found a new mission: saving donkeys from slaughter. It's an unexpected turn for Ron King, who went from wearing Gucci and covering fashion to caring for donkeys and helping them heal in a sanctuary he created in Northern California.

David Begnaud hit this one out of the park. An amazing correspondent and storyteller! Takes the time to observe, elicit information and enthuse the viewer with these visual experiences. The animals are intelligent, sentient beings, who respond to love, patience and kindness and are fortunate to have found sanctuary there. Few are that lucky. Well done!

Beautiful story, animals are healers. We rescued our first donkey 8 years ago, he had a collar on that should have been removed God only knows, so he lost his bray, his hooves were curled from neglect and he had foundered and he was abused by an unworthy family. The people we got him from took the donkey from that family. We got the call when they heard we were looking for a donkey, but two days before that we brought home 2 mini horses. My husband saw my eyes light up so he said we would go look, he made the mistake of hooking up our horse trailer to the truck. He was wild and in need of care & love. They were going to shoot the poor thing if we didn't take him. His name was Pepe, I wanted him to leave his awful past behind so we called him Pepe Louie for 3 months til we thought we could drop his old name. He seemed happier, we got his weight in check the first year and his feet where he could stand and run comfortably. Louie was a joy, we loved each other so much... and one day I was coming near him and he let out this screeching sound, he got his voice back, neighbors say they heard it more than a mile up the road lol. He is with a cousin now and he has learned tricks that he entertains people at fairs and he is so proud of what he can do! The reason she has him is my mini mare had a mini mule with another mini donkey of ours we were told was gelded (to our surprise) and Louie took over when Thunder was born and wouldn't let our mare anywhere near the foal. Anyway, a year later the mini mule was still tiny but powerful he was rolling over our two senior dogs and was in a real brat stage, so our cousin again was thrilled and she took the little one and his dad Jake and they were reunited with Louie.

@@oscarsplace6199 Thank you for your kind words. I love animals but my husband is the mushy one when no one is looking...lol. We ended up with 12 minis and mini donkies within a short period of time, it was a wonderful experience! Some went on to be trained for visiting hospitals and nursing homes, a pony for a lil girl to spoil with braids in her mane with lots of bows, individually they've brought much joy and so on. I do miss all of them, they were quite the herd together getting into mischief always lol. About 6 years ago one night in early December we had gotten 2 feet of snow, it was dawn Sunday with an orange pink glow and we were awoke from a ruckus on our front porch, turns out the donkies and horses all got out and were running and playing on our porch and in the snow. We through our barn clothes on quickly, needless to say... Someone did not close the gate to the cow pastures (100 acres) and that little herd of minis were making use of it... running all together as fast as their lil hooves would take them, snow swishing and flighing everywhere, it was a half mile out and then back again they were having a grand old time, but this time they kept on going right out of the dooryard all taking a sharp right onto the road then another into my husbands aunts yard (thank the lord), she was not impressed but couldn't hold back her laughter, you heard the sound of thunder of hooves and it turns out to be a bunch of mischievous mini horses & mini donkies on the loose, it was quite a sight to behold! One of the best days ever for animals & human lol....

Even those horses that were once well known & big money makers are oh so too easily written off & not so humanely destroyed … same plight for used up racing greyhounds … My hat’s off for creating a refuge for unwanted/burdensome donkeys whose only sin was being born a donkey.
