FORGOTTEN 1957 Dodge Restoration After YEARS of Sitting! Fixing 64 Year Old Brakes

"He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty;
and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." - Proverbs 16:32
Big John the 1957 Dodge D500 fights me at every possible turn. Think this truck will ever hit the road again after sitting for decades?

Yes ! The messed up hair ending was great , explained the whole " fun " journey of car maintenance and repair. and modification. As I write the soccer fans in the pub down the road are singing like a football folk song chant thing I think England might have beat Italy in the Euros.
Love the moral of this video. He who can admit when he is wrong, is strong indeed.

My question for automotive experts: If it's a safety feature to have the driver's side lug nuts left-hand threaded, why doesn't everyone do it? You'd think there would be lots of news stories of wheels loosening and coming off on other makes...
@uzivatel56
3 жыл бұрын
@@odahithedubious2017 You just answered your question. Somebody decided it was not worth the hassle manufacturing cars with different thread directions on the lugnuts. Nothing happened. Wheels didn't come loose. It works just fine.

I love Big John. Please do more of him! You're my favorite classic car restoration mechanic on youtube.
The intro is fantastic 👏🏻
That narration was PERFECT. It was engaging, funny, and the got it wrong counter just made a video that would work for non-car people. It was 40 minutes that felt like 15. Great job.
I had an old Chevy dump truck that I used to keep in my front yard and the way big John Started and idled made me have nostalgia I miss that old dump truck.
Dylan; the explanation for why it stopped raining; God has a sense of humor, if you ever doubt that just tell him your plans. If that's not enough look at the Duck billed platypus.
My father in law almost died when starting a tractor. It ran him over and almost ended his life. He was starting it by shorting it like you did.

Love the sense of humor, Sir. Sounds like the electric pump decided to self-immolate.
Good luck with John, what a stubborn fella he is. I'm sure you will beat him into submission eventually and become good friends and have many good years together. Looking back and being able to laugh at this moment in time :)
I love this ol truck my uncle bought 1 like this new. He used it till 1988 then gave it to his son my cousin. And he restored it takes it to local shows now
looking forward to seeing big john back on the road!

That head smacked of the hood is priceless. .been there done that!
Dylan it is great that you use what we call a sermon to get a good point across. The Dodge truck would make a nice camper.
Hey Dylan @10:09, that 1/2” hose fitting should have a hose running up to your engine. That’s how the brake booster gets vacuum. Will definitely help with the ease of braking. On the firewall of your truck they might still have a large check valve mounted to the firewall, one side goes to the intake manifold and one side to the fitting on the booster. I’ve changed a few of those boosters over the years on 2 ton trucks. They are like master cylinders, they don’t like to sit up for long. May have to invest in one of those as well. Good luck with the project
Don’t give up! That truck has been waiting for YOU. Big John knows your his salvation, don’t let him down.
You hit the nail on the head with the "patience" story... well done and thanks for the reminder!
With how difficult this process has been, I was cheering with every success and down in the mouth with every set back. You're doing great Dylan. There's an old riddle: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! Make sure you chew well with every bite my friend, and best of luck on this build.
I love the positive message. The world needs more people like you.
Haven't even watched the whole video, gave it a thumbs up just for the intro. I think we could use the "most important tool" a lot more.
Dylan, you are a good teacher - I'm not a car fixing type of guy, but I enjoy watching and learning from your videos.
I share the love for the old Dodge,....lol....you found out Ya don't mess with Big John,.....you tryd to walk it outta there....but Big John just took off runnin without ya......Yall lucked out on this beauty,...usually them valves get all stuck from sittin....& ya gotta pull the head & lube & tap & crank & hope they don't snap off...I had The D100, flat 6 3on the tree,... my first P/U...it was a rusty old bucket....but I rebuilt all the external engine components & drove it for years without a problem.
Dylan’s videos are getting better and better man... I think I’m going to start calling him Dylan “McSmoooothh” ☺️☺️👍🏻👍🏻💪🏻
The problem with the brakes is that once there’s a leak and it sits a long time, moisture finds its way in and everything corrodes from that point on, hence the seized master piston and leaky wheel cylinders…Great content and presentation style, almost as if you’re narrating a tv show with a story line in the style of “The Wonder Years”, subbed…

I truly enjoy your videos. Not only are you talented with vehicles and engines but your are also a fantastic, natural teacher. Along with Junkyard Digs and Thunderhead289, y’all are a first rate tech school! You encourage novices like me to be more self sufficient. Thank you for the great content!
Dylan, make yourself a drum brake spring tool. Take an old STRONG standard (flat-tip) screw driver and grind a V-shaped slot into the blade of the screwdriver. It will make the job INFINITELY easier.
Loved everything about this video. Everything. Big John can fight all he wants, but he’ll never win the war!
Great format, I like how it displays an inner dialogue while teaching a lesson. Thanks Dylan!
Everybody has to have their own way of being unique. He found his! Love it.
That Truck is a GREAT Find! Congrats! :)
I liked this video a lot! Awesome editing!
This young man and those like him gives me hope for the future of America . What a fine example of young manhood.
In the year this truck was built, don't blame John. That electric fuel pump is an after market item. So now my old pickup is gonna get an electric fuel pump also. Now that John bared his teeth and laid back his ears I know exactly how to get my old truck to start right away. Thank you John boy for the help.
I love your real life content and the fact that you don't leave much out. My opinion the less you leave out the better the video. Great Job!
Hey now that you're driving a "BIG JOHN TRUCK" use them mirrors when backing! LOL Hope you're having as much fun doing these as we are watching them! ✌☝️😎
Your excitement while driving this truck is on a new level.
Hands down the most inspirational KZreadr on the web now much respect keep up the good work brother
Man working on an old thing like that in the rain is some character building stuff. Almost feel guilty watching this all warm and cozy.
I like the new narrator. He seems to get a bit too close sometimes but I chalk it up to enthusiasm. A fine addition to the team.
The camera falling over at the end there, just about sums up your day! Keep at it fella, John’ll come around in the end.
Dylan, you're getting better and better at making content...now that I see you're trying to add a bit of humour to your videos and it works really well Dylan you have a great humour sense..keep going, buddy..you'll get there..!

I’ve got a 1950 Dodge 1 ton flatbed. I feel your pain my truck seems to fight me every time I work on it. But it’s a blast to drive. Love the truck👍
This has been my biggest problem ever working on 3 and 4 wheelers and my truck, I have no patience. For being 15 going on 16 I am pretty darn good at working on atvs its how I earned the money to buy my truck but once one or a few things go wrong I get stressed out and mad since I feel like I'm not doing good enough so then I go inside to do something else which is not productive. Seeing this intro has made me want to try to get my patience back, thank you.
36:37 as John said don’t get to cocky young man!
I rebuild a 50 International Harvester L162 a few years back. It was a leaning experience with a steep curve. Turned out to be a great truck. I sold it to make room in my barn for more projects. Kinda wish I still had it. :)
I love the opening. My dad never learned that lesson and always threw his tools around loosing his temper. I practice patience and keeping a cool temper both in my daily job as a mechanic and with my son when teaching him new skills like ridding a scooter or swimming.
My "patience" wrench is bent, broken and scratched from throwing it at something or skipping across the garage floor along with some choice swear words. It's therapeutic to throw it and I feel better after. Great video Dylan!
Great vid. I really like the new format. Looking forward to see Big John revived and runnin like a top!
big john is just showin his self alittle bit. .......nothin to worry about. job well done. 😁👍👍
I'm loving your story about "BIG JOHN". This was so funny, and when the camera couldn't even stand to watch Big John getting towed home, I just lost it! Can't wait for the next video.
You’re a man of culture I see, Knipex Cobra. 🙌🏻
Literally laughed out loud at "...nowican'tseethistastesfunny." All those comments, stacked right on top of one another, was a stroke of editing genius.
Loved the Video. It is amazing what you have to do to these old trucks and cars to get them going again. You have done great just keep up the fine work and post more videos... I can't wait...
One of the best episodes I’ve seen yet . I’m rooting for ya. Big John 😬
The additional work you put into editing this one and voice overs etc shows. You have better software than I do, and you know how to use it. Most people don't realize the hours of work that goes into a video. Your patience got a workout today.

BTW, love that truck. Totally something I would own.
love this series, I'm currently going through the same thing with brakes on my 1971 Ford f600 dump truck that sat for 15 years, just finished installing all new brake shoes and 6 new wheel cylinders and several brake lines, going to attempt to get them bled out tonight! Good luck moving forward with big john!
Love the new format. Love the rebuild/repair of this truck. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for much better content than what I can get on TV or cable!
41:11 good example here of properly jacking up a vehicle and safely supporting the vehicle and the jack stands to keep everything stable
Really enjoying this story telling format of the past couple videos, thanks for all the effort!
Hello Dylan. I am fairly new to your KZread channel and really enjoyed this video. Regarding the hydraulic braking system; From the parts that were already replaced, I would strongly advise you to go ahead and replace all of the hydraulic brake hoses. On a vehicle that has been sitting for a long period of time, The hoses usually crack open at where they have the metal crimped onto the rubber hydraulic hoses or they deteriorate internally and get to the point where you have to practically stand on the brake pedal to engage the brakes. One thing to assist in removing those large wheels would be a roll around wheel lift designed for dual wheels or maybe even a hydraulic pallet jack with a helper to help steady the wheels. I worked for many years within a state government equipment repair facility in which the mechanics were doing basically the same things you were except our trucks braking systems transitioned from electric over hydraulic to air brakes. One point to always remember regarding the IH/Navistar trucks was that you should take a photo or write down all of the pertinent information that is on the ID Plate. Always know what the day that your truck was manufactured because IH was notorious about changing production runs within a model year and sometimes more than once. Ford was also famous for changing midstream within a model year.
Patience is indeed a virtue Great intro. Love the wrong counter. We are rooting for you. That is going to be one awesome truck with stories to back when done. Hang in there!
Fantastic video Dylan! Love the new storyline and videography!
I love watching your videos, they're so neat to watch and see what you can do with cars and God bless you!!
Love this series with this old truck. I'd have had a EZ Wire wiring kit over nighted and rewired that truck within the next few days! Can't wait for the next video on it!
Greetings from a cold and windy Scotland. Your videos are jist Beezer. Thank You for posting.
You and Derick are my go to for entertainment. Great job Dylan. Keep it up!
It is always great the first trip after you bring one back
These videos get better and better. Keep up the good work.
Patience is right! Good stuff man!
I love the narration. Adds something new to the videos, in a good way!!! Keep up the good work!!!
I love watching you reason out how to work out the problem. It is so satisfying to watch the darn truck stop!
Those rear wheel nuts are called budnuts. Also, its fun watching light duty guys remove tires on heavy trucks! A prybar under the wheel helps a ton! Slides right off
I can believe anything you work on is driving. You are an amazing mechanic.
you are doing a great job with these recent videos. I love the story quality and your heart
Dylan this is a good one i enjoyed love the beginning and the advice to yourself. Good advice to all, im still working on it my self. That truck is now family to me since you named it soooo be nice.
Cool videos love the stories and the point of view keep up the good work can't wait for more videos
Nice job! I really enjoy the way you've changed how you shoot your videos. Great project the 57 is my favorite body style of that era of Dodge trucks.
The interesting thing about patience is how misaligned expectations oftentimes are responsible for its absence. It took me 40 years to figure out the cause and effect relationship between patience and expectations, but it was a welcomed revelation, so now I teach my students what I’ve learned via living in the hopes that I’ll preserve their patience. Loved the video Dylan! Just think, you are finally giving this old iron the attention it has always needed-I bet your efforts will pay great dividends and give you a bit of joy to boot. ✌🏻🧰🔧👏🏻 Fun fact: my nickname as youngster was Big Bad John🤣🤣. I earned this name because I swung a vicious pickaxe and splitting maul.
That was great.... Keep up the work on John!

I loved the look on your face at the end, awesome. Keep working on him and he'll be pulling stumps on your land in no time. God Bless Dylan!
