@History: This is a general misconception that the sword breaker was used to break the actual sword. It wasn't. "To sword / the sword" was said to talk about the swordwork, the fencing with the sword. So when you "break your enemies sword" what it meant was "to break your enemies swordwork aka fencing". And it was not used in medieval times, it was used later in renaisance, 16th-17th century. Sorry, FiF, you have to up your knowlegde a bit ;)

The sword breaker was an uncommon renaissance dueling knife used to bind with an enemy's weapon and render it temporarily useless as you stuck the opponent. It was uncommon because they're hard to make and use and there were other weapons that could do the same task without being as hard to use.

While I haven't watched too much of this show, I really like how wholesome everyone is. From all the clips I've watched, everyone seems to take their criticism gracefully and accept their mistakes. Yeah, the name is a bit misleading. It would be more accurate to call it a sword trapper. The serrations are meant to allow you to more easily trap and redirect the opponents sword. Theoretically you can 'pinch' the opponents blade so it cannot be used to defend against your own strikes.
@PoorFoxface
3 жыл бұрын
I've heard that the "breaking" the name refers to relates to breaking the guard (defensive / pre-strike starting position) the sword is being held in, rather than the blade itself. It was, as you say, a control weapon. It traps the enemy blade so that their guard can be broken, either aiding disarmament or opening a gap in their defences that can be exploited with a follow-up blow.

3:16 *"If there's any stress left in the metal, that's going to home out and that's usually in the shape of a warp."* That's true, but not the only possibility: the internal stress can also cause stress fractures. So for any aspiring blade smiths - fully anneal the blade. Heat the blade up till it's hot enough to heat treat (critical temperature, nonferrous, nonmagnetic) - then instead of quenching: pack it in an insulating material and let it cool as slowly as possible. This will relieve nearly all of the stress left in the blade by the forging process. Normalizing is good, it relieves a lot, if not most, of the internal stresses by doing several thermal cycles: but annealing is better. The difference is thermal cycling with multiple normalizations only takes hours: while fully annealing may require an entire day.
They're always SO nice to each other
Good choice on the winner. One point of contention with the judges: the sword breaker is meant for the off-hand, not just the left hand. A left-handed fighter would use it in his right hand. Thus, having the ring on the other side is not a mistake.
@frasierm314
2 жыл бұрын
another thing to know, left handedness did not become a thing until the late 1800's as result of a gene mutation, so he was still wrong. And the bladesmith James was right handed, so considering he was told it was an offhanded weapon he would not of purposely made that weapon with the state of mind that his right hand was his off hand.

Don't want to sound like a sword nerd, but... You put one ring on the guard of a swordbreaker for a reason. And the fact, that your hand isn't protected when you specifically switch to the serrated part isn't a Smith's fault. The technique behind catching the opponent's blade in the serretion is in twisting the wrist in a specific moment of the opponent's attack. So - the comment on the lack of defence of the knuckles is a bit inaccurate imho
@redknight6695
3 жыл бұрын
Also, the Sword-Breaker (not really a sword breaker) was used by nobles in DUELS, not by knights. It was used mainly as a side-arm to RAPIER duels. It is meant to catch and bend the opponent's rapier and consequently, their wrists. It was never meant to BREAK swords or any other weapons, only to momentarely unable the opponent to attack.

So I'm an anime fan and also a big fan of this show. When I found out they did one of the weapons in my favorite anime and game sword art only I kinds laughed in joy since it's the first time I heard something from an anime featured in a tv show.
Wow - i'm no sword expert, but i'm always impressed with what these smiths create...event he ones that break are fascinating to watch in use.
Although an unrealistic expectation, I was hoping the final test would be a real battle between contestants and their blades.
Everyone is talking about why sao was mentioned but they ain’t talking why he was talking about the video game instead of the anime.

sorry if im wrong but as i remember the Character that wield the Sword Breaker ( Philia ), isnt even mentioned in Anime ( SAO,ALO,GGO,or even Alicizatio, i didnt watch the alternate GGO), i know her from SAO:Integral Factor and she appear on other game too like Hollow Fragment (idk bout the rest) , but since 1H Dagger isnt my main (on Integral Factor, and yes you didnt play as Kirito but u create ur own char) so i didnt use it.
4:35 tests starts from here
The most friendly competition they're actually happy for each other

If he lives out of town, then yeah it could easily take 4 hours to go get a new 3" PVC endcap.
Great episode!
It's also good as a regular parrying dagger, being even capable of stopping an axe! My OC has a pair of these, one for the right hand and the other for the left. Having two is also good for a nice strong dual cross block, as you can insert the edge of one dagger into the teeth on the other and draw the sword into the middle
You'd expect the eperts on this stuff to know the sword breaker didn't actually break swords that often it just trapped them.
“And do some cutting test on it.” “I’ve got my daughters out there” oh
Bruh the turtle was just vibin and gets slapped with a pvc
The most humble show I have seen. Nice hosts and respectful competitors. They should win more than $10,000.
