Sword "Breaker" or Sword "Catcher"?

Tod's reproduction of a Renaissance Sword "Breaker" or is it a 'sword catcher'?
Most likely named by the Victorians, these unusual looking daggers were actually used to catch and control an opponent's rapier blade and so Sword "Catcher" would probably be a more accurate name.

    From a completely inexpert perspective, I wonder if it was a distancing problem. Once the dagger and rapier are bound, it seems like it locks the combatants at a distance where the binder's rapier would rapidly become relatively useless compared the the standard dirk that would be in the bound person's left hand, ready to rapidly close the now relatively small distance

  • @PatrickRatman

    @PatrickRatman

    Жыл бұрын

    could work if you had a second dagger instead. but at that point i think the opponent would have figured out your potential strategy and avoid any attacks that could be easily be grabbed by the sword breaker, fending you off with distanced thrusts and refusing to get in a distance where such a strategy could be effective.

    I remember hearing one of the possible reasons for them being called a sword breaker was more about breaking the other person's timing and stride. A bit like a disarm used to come from the diableing of the arm, and the term has now become used for removing of a weapon from an opponent.

    I agree that it would take masterful wielding to be relied on. Being able to land the grip angle on the blade is crucial so a lot of training is needed. Another issue is that blades can vary in width, which seems to limit the compatibility of the sword catcher to each blade wielded in combat.

    I have been playing swords with rapiers for about 15 years now. I've never used a "sword breaker" in that time. I agree with the "name" explanation very much. Why not make a lot of them? Well, they're going to be more expensive than a regular dagger. A regular dagger will be more versatile. You can use that dagger for attacks that won't get snagged on the opponent's clothes and won't stay stuck in the opponent. And the dagger itself is just another article to have with you for all sorts of tool uses as well. If you're expecting trouble and want to block that trouble, you'd bring a buckler. A target style is nice. And if you want to to catch and trap a blade in your buckler you can weld a raised circular metal rod onto your buckler. Which was done. So it would seem to me that this lovely "sword buckler" is less a failure and more of a "not versatile enough" and there was something that did the job of blocking better.

However, it is possible that hundreds of years ago, such usage did seem natural. Conversely, it could just be an exception that was accepted because it simply sounds good. So they may have thought of it as something like sword-momentum-breaker, but "swordbreaker" is, excuse me, quite catchy. "car brakes" also implicitly refers to breaking the momentum of the car, without explicitly including that in the name.

    It's a little disappointing that this dagger can't actually "break" a sword, but the fact that it can catch the opponent's blade does have some merits to it even if they came off as impractical if you're expecting it to work every single time without fail. This is exactly why it would make more practical sense to have a spare weapon in your other hand to fight back with to make up for that glaring weakness, especially for a fantasy character facing other sword or blade-wielding foes.

    I think it just took a little bit more time to practice with it than your average fencer was willing to commit. I would imagine someone dedicated and adept in its use would be a formidable opponent. I know as a practicing martial artist specialising in paired weapon techniques e.g butterfly swords. I find that particular pairing very interesting. Especially the blade trapping aspect.

    fierydawn Well yes, but in reality you could carry a shield AND a sword breaker at the same time no? Like use the shield at first and if you drop it or want to suprise the enemy, then just whip this bad body out and trap your opponents sword.

  • @TrueBark

    @TrueBark

    4 жыл бұрын

    Also adding to that, when you have a sword cought on the battlefield and slain your foe, you needed precision and skill to catch the sword, do that like 20 times on the battlefield now where unexpected situations happen, you get ganked on by two dudes or your sword breaker is occupied with the last sword you have in there and another enemy faces you. IMO great for controlled fights most likely 1v1s but the shield benefits outweigh on any other case for me, not getting into personal skill at all ...

    I suspect that simply the added time (and therefore cost) +/- smithing ability required to construct one of these, and hence the material cost of the resulting weapon, simply outweighed any (I suspect) marginal benefits of it, compared to the average dagger. It's certainly a fascinating design though!
