The thing I most dread about flying, is the border checks coming back to my country, the UK. Even though I'm a UK citizen with a UK passport, they still ask me a dozen questions: what is my job, do I live alone, where am I going, what's my address, how am I going to get there. Of course I know I should be OK. But they've sent foreign people back who had a perfect right to come in, and all the proof. They just refused to believe them.

@@Igorinrussia There was a case of a student from Nepal (that was once part of British India). He had enrolled as a student on a tourism course in the UK. His family had crowd funded the money for the course. When he got to the UK, the Border Force refused to let him in, even though the college had confirmed that he had enrolled with them and paid the money. The Border Force expected him to name most of the course modules from memory and when he couldn't, they said he had no interest in what he was supposedly studying. He had paid all the course fees, but when they contacted the college, it gave a standard response confirming that he had paid the minimum amount. The Border Force picked on this disparity between the amount he said and what the college had said, to claim he was lying. They're a complete nightmare.

0:08:30 - the business visa is not a work visa (check “On approval of the list "Purposes of travel" when issuing visas to foreign citizens» - then you will know WHAT EXACTLY you are allowed to do in Russia with different visa types). Business visa allows you to enter to Russia for business negotiations, signing contracts, visiting exhibitions and fairs, etc. - but not to earn money DIRECTLY in Russia.

0:03:10 - that usually means that the same very day, just a few hours before you came to RU border, at the matching FI border control point a few RU citizens have been denied entry (and their visas have been cancelled). So a few hours later “the empire strikes back”, and denies entry (and cancels the entry visas) for FI citizens intending to enter RU. Eye for an eye.

0:01:50 - e-visas are not free. They cost $52, that can be paid only by a bank card issued outside of Russia.

Thanks for another interesting video Igor. In April they stopped me very briefly at the border control. At most 7 minutes. Then they let me in. I had a tourist visa. However, I have a Russian daughter so I could get a 'family visa' but it seems that it might be more difficult than a tourist visa. I am going again soon maybe I should try and sort out the family visa. FYI I am a UK citizen. So I don't think we can get eVisa??

@IGORinRussia It's like we've traveled back in time to the 1990s, to the post-Soviet era. I remember that time well, and I have many funny stories to tell about the arbitrary actions of the Russian border authorities at the Finnish border. Now, arbitrariness doesn't have much significance because very few people travel to Russia anymore. Russia is becoming an incredibly inexpensive destination for those who do travel there. Can you imagine! The Central Bank of Russia has raised the key interest rate to 12 percent, and yet the plunge of the ruble hasn't subsided. Foreign goods will become really expensive for Russians.

Is it easier to enter with a E visa rather than a normal one?

The main differences are: 1. Only the citizens of 55 countries are eligible to receive Russian e-Visas; 2. e-Visas are single entry ONLY (not double and not multi); 3. e-Visas are issued for a 60 days large "corridor" /with 16 days of stay in Russia max (while multi-entry visas can be up to 3 years, and permit up to 90 days of stay withing 180 days / or 180 days out of 365).

When I was leaving Russia this summer I also had almost the same situation. The customs lady started to ask some questions when I was heading back to Finland: What was your trip's purpose, business, etc.? I said that on a family trip, my brother had finally moved to Russia from Turkmenistan and I was visiting him. She thought for a couple of minutes and then let me pass. Also 1.5 months after came back to Russia no questions were asked of any kind. Probably also helps that I have a Ukrainian/Russian name.

"The customs lady"? Are you sure? Customs are controlling the transportation of cash and goods across the borders only. The questions you have mentionned above were, most likely, asked by a border control officer.

I traveled to Russia to see my parents first time in 4.5 years with visa. On my way through Latvia everything went well but when I was leaving Russia at the airport of Yekaterinburg I was stopped for two hours at the passport control. Almost missed my plane. Was asked many questions in a special room. Have no idea what would happen next time? They also were questioning me about my social media contacts and KZread. The situation was absolutely the same. I was the first one waiting for my passport to be stamped and my passport wasn't returned to me, instead I had to wait for a special employee to be questioned additionally at another room.

Hello Igor ! I've been planning to visit St. Petersburg in the coming weeks with a e-visa from Finland. Maybe exit from Narva to Estonia. Just a.few days to see the City. I guess it"s still doable ?

@@Igorinrussia It's just an idea to see Narva crossing, but since I would be travelling by bus/train, it takes some more planning. I'm tempted to make a road trip around the gulf of Finland. Roads are quite good, we visited Kronstadt from Vyborg a few years ago. Great shaslik !

0:05:40 - THEY know, of course - BUT you are not supposed to admit it openly! You shall learn the name of the company that has issued an invitation letter for you, and learn the right answer (e.g. “I am planning to sign a contract / establish a business with them, so I am traveling to meet people from this company / to negotiate the future projects”). Most of the visa agencies send you a short memo with all this information (company name, and the person working for this company - name, last name, phone number - who, if the border control calls, would answer the phone and confirm that they have invited you).

You can not have two visas to the same country at the same time. If you have a business-visa, you can not get a tourist visa at the same time - first you have to bring your travel passport to the consulate that has issued your business visa and to have that visa cancelled. Then you can apply for another visa, with different purpose of visit and / or different duration.

@@mustapilleri No, you can not - because when you try to apply for the second e-Visa, in the computer system of Russian ministry of foreign affairs there will already be an information about the first issued e-Visa. So the second application will not be approved until you use (means: entry and exit) the first e-Visa.

Depends on what type of visa you're planning to enter. If on a tourist visa: 1. Have the hotel confirmation, voucher, and "confirmation of a foreign tourist acceptance" printed & saved in your smartphone 2. Know the name and the telephone number of the RU travel agency that has issued them. 3. Learn what RU cities are printed in your visa (only Moscow? or also Saint-Petersburg? some other cities?) + 3A have the hotel reservation confirmations from these cities as well, printed AND saved in your smartphone. 4. Be ready to answer the question "Do you have the tickets to go there? If not - who will provide you with the tickets?". 5. Have your return flight ticket printed. 6. Have a health insurance printed + saved as PDF in your smartphone. 7. Have the sufficient amount of money with you (RU subsitence wage / divided into 30 x multiplied into the number of days you are planning to stay). 8. Be able to prove that you intend to return to your home country (have the copies of your working contract, apartment rental or ownership papers, etc.).

I was denied entry on a student visa two weeks ago. They didn't not tell me the reason . My phone was checked .

I love that piece of SPB I was near once or twice max. I was in a Naval hospital 300 meter from this spot in 2007 with severe injury

When I going back from St Petersburg, it happen to me , they ask me where i live , then when bus is full , they give me my passport and let me go.

Last year I had to wait a while and then give full fingerprints, but this year I went through easily, family visa, from UK.

@@Igorinrussia you leave basic fingerprints when you apply for the visa, but these were the full fingerprinting process. We had a few Ukrainians on the minibus so that delayed things further, I was just from an "unfriendly state" 😏

Yes this happens everywhere, if people use visa for wrong purposes as the visa was intended. Ibterestibg how they made news about it in Finland, when i know that Finns are more stricter with their visas for Russians

We're living in wartime, as things escalate it will eventually be difficult for anyone living in a "unfriendly" country to visit Russia. You're lucky you have your KZread channel that promotes Russia in a positive way, I'm sure it helps. I wish I would of went to work there 15-20 years ago and worked on getting my citizenship. At this point it might be too late for a lot of us westerners to ever live there.

The company that I worked for had some invitations flat-out refused, which is definitely not how it was before. So with that, yeah, it can be understood that the door is starting to close on some of those outside. Thankfully, I'm marrying my girlfriend this year and won't have to worry so much myself. And generally, I haven't had any problems with any documents, everyone treats me respectfully, but I also haven't left in a couple of years and support the direction of the country. But still, there are plenty of sympathetic Westerners out there who can help make the country even better.

There no ”wartime” actions at border, new E-visa launched etc. The tension are visible via these kind of things

I found what they did to you at the border pretty normal, they do it to foreigners at the US border/airport, when the customs authorities have doubts about the intent of the guest visiting the country, they are taken aside, interrogated and searched. Russia has to make sure you're not a Ukrainian agent/saboteur or a NATO spy, Russia has to do all within its power to prevent terrorist acts in the country (they had a few so far, and it's believed those have been done by agents working for Ukraine/NATO). Another thing, if Finland gives Russians a hard time at the border, then Russia should reciprocate and do the same thing with foreigners coming from that country.

Customs area of responsibility is transportation of currencies and goods across the border, solely. "Another thing, if Finland gives Russians a hard time at the border, then Russia should reciprocate and do the same thing with foreigners coming from that country" - here I completely agree with you. Reciprocity is the main rule of diplomacy :)

@@M_mOuSe_ in the US ICE(Immigration Customs Enforcement) and HSI (Homeland Security) are the agents someone will encounter at the airport, so customs is a correct name in the above described scenario.

@@miked451 Interesting! In Russia and in Europe these are two different structures. In Russia, passport control (border guards) is a division of the Federal Security Service (FSB). While customs is a separate structure dealing exclusively with economic issues (taxes - if the cost of goods exceeds the permissible value for the green corridor, movement of cash currency, etc.)

@@M_mOuSe_ they used to be separate agencies in the US before Sept 11 attacks. After that they were combined under Homeland Security umbrella to supposedly help with intel sharing.

I already wrote about this on another channel (EXPAT American) ..... If it were up to me, I would let foreigners into Russia (well, like they do in the Baltics) only after they answer a few questions correctly. For example: - whose Crimea is it? - what is the difference between "Русский (Russian)" and "Российский (Russian)"? If the result is negative, they should be sent to a hospital for treatment to instill love for Russia. And after compulsory treatment in the form of learning by heart the Russian anthem and marching in kirzovye boots, followed by forced deportation for 2 weeks to a sanatorium in North Correia to further improve their health...
