Great video! I had to do the same on my 02 f-150. It was almost just as bad. I purchased it with that noise already. I thought I was looking at an engine replacement. But after tearing into it I found this same situation. But the rest of the engine looked to be in good shape. No sludge, cam lobes in great shape. So I decided to install a new timing set. So far after about 7k miles on it after it's still running strong.

James Peters I just bought a 2002 f-150 a couple of weeks ago with the tapping noises on the passenger side also (4x4 xlt 130,000 red & silver BEAUTY for $2,200) The dealer said he'd go half fees on a reconditioned motor 1,200 if anything happened to this one and he knew nobody else would buy it unless he fix it. His mechanic said it would take 20hrs in labor and cost $1,500!. My chain kit came yesterday getting fixed tomorrow have a hole in the motor where the chain is slapping 😲still runs strong 👍🏃‍♀️lol!

@@johnecker4217 If these systems are so prone to failure at low mileage, Ford should have designed them with a rubber belt instead. My 4.6L lasted until exactly 200K before the rattling sound, but it seems I was one of the lucky ones. I did use synthetic it's entire life, so may have delayed the inevitable.

WOW. I hope my 2000 Grand Marquis 4.6L V8 engine doesn't look like this. My engine just started having a very similar sound. At first, I was thinking a rod was making the tapping sound. Today, I started thinking, maybe, my timing chain may be off somehow, as something not right somewhere. Your video has been very illuminating. Thanks for this.

Other makes and models with timing chain driven OHC are not substantially different. My dad had his whole timing set done on his 2010 Honda Accord because it was doing the same, for example. 190K miles. Much as the OEM's like to advertise timing chains as a lifetime item, they really aren't with the kinds of mileage people are getting today on their engines.

That is the same issue my 2005 Aviator had when I bought it used. The guides were in the oil pan. Pulled the engine for a complete internal inspection. Thankfully there was absolutely no bearing or journal damage. I did have to replace the cams, roller followers and complete timing set with guides. Found a good set of stock pull-out cams from a 2001 Cobra for $400. Previous owner did not change the oil often enough. I had to vapor blast the heads and block to clean up the heavy varnish deposits.

At 8:18 you mentioned the engine condition in a negative manner but did do the repair and at the very end of the video "the engine could be saved". Best guess on potential future mileage/life left on this engine? What is amazing is everything performed like it should. I know that sounds stupid but at the end of the day whether you were doing normal maintenence at 150,000 (timing chain replacement) the cost is basically the same and you have the engine back and running either way. You have incurred the same labor costs. The bad part is we as the consumer want the engine to run without a major repair to 250,000+. Awesome video!!!! Thank!!!

It goes away when I ease off the gas when excelarating. Do the tensioner ports get clogged and don't provide enough pressure on the tensioner or could it be a guide? i have 214,000 on the engine and am about to change the valve cover gaskets because they are leaking. could I be walking into a big problem?

Well I just started hearing a noise like this but it’s very faint and it’s only at idle. It gets quieter after running a couple minutes and goes away completely at idle after a few minutes. if I bump the throttle up just above idle it smooths right out and no noise. Could this be the guide going/gone bad or would I have noise the entire time and off idle?

Wow that's one sparkly oil pan. Amazing how much punishment some engines can take. I had a Ford 4.0 SOHC that sat with the ENTIRE crankcase up to the intake manifold full of rainwater for years. Water ran out of the spark plug holes and oil drain plug for about 5 minutes. Shot some rust penetrant in each plug hole. And it fired on first try no problem. Still driving years later.

I'm a GM fan but stopped to take a look at Ford's version of the timing chain problem. The GM 3.6L eventually suffers from timing chain elongation from wear (many incorrectly call it stretch) and trips the engine light. They also develop a characteristic rattle along with it. Manufacturer recommendations are not always the best and often times are a happy medium to help accomplish EPA requirements. I believe very strongly that the trend towards lower viscosity engine oils for a little bump in fuel economy is at the expense of longevity. Higher viscosity does more than just help keep oil pressure up, it also offers more protection against impact wear. Not unlike the difference running in church shoes on a hard surface vs. running shoes makes on your feet. This is why gear oils are usually very high viscosity. I moved from 5w30 Mobil 1 to 10W40 after my timing chain change in the 3.6L for more moving part cushioning at startup and operating temps and if the variable valve timing will permit it I might run as high as a 50 wt.

Hoping you can help. I have a 99 lariat with the 2V 4.6.. I installed new guides, new tensioners, and new chains. But every time i put the balancer on front it will hang the engine up. I took back apart and installed everything again except for the cover to see what was happening. The chains are hitting each other at the bottom where they pass along the crankshaft gear. What is causing this. I have checked over and over and the crankshaft timing gear is a double and they are on right. When I took them off I tied them together and put a white mark on the front side so I would know how they went back on. What is causing this? Thank you for any answer yo may could give.

I have a 2008 ford fusion 2.3 100k miles never opened the engine except valve cover gasket replacement. I don't hear any noises but how can I determine if I have any wear or guide/tensioner broken ? I worry that sooner or later I may have to change it but would like to be very aware of its condition

Great job, and I know aluminum isn't as bad in bearing surfaces but that thing is living on borrowed time.

Rod bearings come coated with aluminum when new. Most of them are trimetal alloy. aluminum copper steel. The bigger problem would be the cam journals in the heads. They have no bearings just an aluminum bore.

+fordtechmakuloco, Brian not sure if this subject has been covered, but for those of us out there have have like 5.4 2v in f150's and expeditions, either low or high miles, would you recommend using Ford's semi synthetic or a full synthetic to aid in this issue not happening at all

Do you change secondary cam chains and sprockets or can you leave them alone if they look ok? Apparently you need a cam lockdown tool to change those. Hear it's an expensive tool. My Lincoln navigator is a 2000 with 185000 on it just starting to hear a little clatter.

I know this is old, but seeing this with my daughters car right now. I think. If the noise just started, would it be safe enough to drive in for repair, or should it be towed? Any thoughts appreciated.

My 4.6 98 Ford 150 rattles when cold for about a minute or 2, then throughout the day it doesn’t make that noise when driving around town, jus makes it in cold start, whenever I drive fast and rev it up to 3-4 rpms and come to a stop it will shake a bit, could it be this as well ?
