What a Godsend. December 2023 and I’ve just bought a 2.0GXL - unfinished project. Shell’s done, painted and rolling. but interior in boxes. This lad sounds northern - hope he is up my way.

Just found this, what a great project! Back in the 80s I remember my school teacher selling his GXL for a tenner when it failed the MoT..think it was a dark silver auto with red interior

I'm a British Leyland guy these days though I was very much into Fords at one time, especially the mk3 Cortina and mk1 Escort. My dad had a mk3 in red with a vinyl roof on a J reg but that was before my time. He talks about it quite often! I had a 4 door mk1 Escort XL in the 90's. I remember the reg, VYA 890M

Fantastic video Pete, lots of useful information and part with the photographer and the Vulcan cracked me up :) like you say, you couldn't make it up! I watched this last night and spent all day sat at work wishing I was in the garage working on mine! Nothing like having the radio on and getting stuck in. Look forward to the next one and can't believe we've still got the two door coming up, I'm sure you've got some great ideas for the recovery video of that one! Cheers again.

Hi pete really enjoyed the update video on the strip down , sounds like its a pre face lift model the first mk3's had the interior light in the middle but the preface lift models had the interior light by the front windscreen also the preface lift models had more features than the earlier models , the fact it had a seperate hazard switch is interesting but could of had a wiring fault common as my dads was always blowing fuses than we found out there a burn out in the wiring and was earthing out lol , probably the model you have is the one just before the mk4 dash model found on post 1973 models on wards and is quite rare , still keep the videos coming and look forward to seeing it restored thanks Den

LDV V8 initially thats what i thought but it has the early larger door switches which they phased out in 72, also the loom has connections for centre light...hmmm , hazard looks like wiring fault as you say as part of old loom is there for hazards, also the roof is cut out to take the centre light, this was blanked out later, wonder if its a change over model, chassis on logbook shows 71 build date as does engine casting code and stamp, mystery continues..all part of the fun

"Not a lot of people know about", lol, your dead right Pete, in all the time i had my old GXL i never realised you could pull one of those levers on the heater controls! 20 plus years later i find out. I have also learned why the steering column plastic shroud never stayed in place properly - it did not have the securing ring around the top of it! Still can't believe how lucky you have been find this car, you must be correct when you say she's never seen much weather. My Mondeo has got more rust than Ruby. Nice info about removing the crash pad, i always wondered how it was held in. Those clips can be a real pain when they use them in places where you can't get to the back of them. Good luck with it all Pete, and great interlude by the way, one hell of a chance meet up! I heard a rumour that the Vulcan is in her last few weeks of flight?, is that correct?, will be a great shame if so.
