Ford C6 Teardown and Inspection - FE Series Fixed Yoke

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I tear down and inspect a 1972 2WD C6 from an FE391 equipped Ford Truck. This C6 is a bit different than the other C6 on the channel in that it has a 'fixed yoke' that features a specialized extension housing, output shaft and yoke secured to the output shaft by a 1-1/2 inch hex nut.
The first part of the video covers the tear down itself where I cover disassembly of the extension housing/output shaft assembly, cover significant changes between early and late C6s and touch on considerations for rebuild.
The second half of the video takes you though a detailed inspection of the case components, case and valve body after they have been cleaned. I also cover valve body mods, tips and pointers for getting the most out of your C6.
The video is long so feel free to skip around or watch sections that are of interest to you based on the TOC below.
Intro - 0:00
Ext to Case Belly Teardown - 2:18
Case Teardown - 36:16
Component Inspection - 1:24:00
Valve Body Pointers and Mods: 2:01:00

I rebuilt my 69 f100 c6 fixed yoke transmission using your other c6 video last month. I wish this one would have been out then but mine turned out great. Thanks for your attention to detail. It helped me big time. First auto rebuild I ever did

Appreciate your videos, your time and sharing your knowledge. Your videos and a few others have made my first C6 rebuild go much smoother than I could have ever hoped for.

That's interesting, being a screw in modulator and has detent in the case . Being 72 must be in that changeover period . Would thought it'd be a clicker valvebody

This one was kind of an odd ball; I also expected to find a clicker VB...It has all the attributes of one except the click/detent.

Another fantastic C6 video! I’m building an early C6 core for my 69 F100….Stock 360, not a performance build - You think I should add the wave/cushion plate to the forward clutch pack? My forward drum can hold 4 frictions plus a wave plate…..I’m wondering what kind of shifts the wave plate will give me. The reverse wave plate seems impossible to find, but maybe the forward is worth adding since they added them post-76.

Hi JB, thank you for watching and the kind words! It's up to you if you want to add but if so, you'll likely need to swap your snap ring to a thinner version....but assuming your clutch clearance falls somewhere between .022-.040 thousands, you'll be fine...Wave cushion plate will give a slightly softer engagement into drive vs leaving it out.

I inherited my Dad’s 1971 Lincoln with the 460CI/365HP engine. Of course, it has the C6 transmission. The car only 65K miles but hasn’t been started since 8/2002. It’s been in my garage since then. The transmission was in great shape when I parked it. I want to get it running again and am wondering what you would recommend I do for the transmission. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Sonny, sorry to hear of your loss (assuming your inheritance was the result of a loss)...As far as the transmissions's concerned, I'd first check fluid level to see if it has the correct amount of fluid and condition of the fluid...Unless he had it serviced at some point in the past, my guess is that Type F is what's in there. Ford switched over to Dex fluid in mid-1976. Assuming the fluid level's correct, doesn't smell, etc I'd prob change out the vacuum modulator...The diaphragm inside is likely degraded and new ones are cheap. I'd also check/replace if necessary the rubber vac line going from the modulator (you prob have a steel section of line and rubber on hose on either side of the steel. Beyond that, try to drive it once you have the engine running, see what happens...It may be ok or it may require an overhaul due to the apply piston seals becoming worn/cracked, etc over the years of sitting.

Those birds are very inconsiderate. They were straight up ridiculous that morning, lol. Thanks for watching, Frank.
