700R4 Build Strategy for Mild to Moderate Performance Applications

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I share and discuss GM 700R4 build strategies for mild to moderate performance applications, which I define as any vehicle that has an engine making ~500 HP or less is largely used within the confines of its design/engineering limits. So much of which I cover here will be applicable for stock applications as well; in fact the only things not critically necessary for stock are the Alto power pack and a few of the specialized Sonnax bushings.
I touch on parts selection, key considerations as well as tips and pointers to get the most out of your rebuild.
I don't get into the valve body too much as I already have videos dedicated to 700R4 valve body mods, tips and tricks which can be found here:

I watch all your videos. When I bought my truck, before I could drive it, I had to have it towed to the transmission shop and they did an oem rebuild for me for $2k in 2019 and since then I had went to prison for a bit and after I got out 5/31/2023 I went through the refreshing process and put it back on the road and everything was perfect like always and all the sudden it was like someone shifted me into neutral. Just out of nowhere. I did some research and so I tried the lockup solenoid and it did perfect again for like 2 weeks then same thing again. So ever since it’s been off the road I ordered the SS Mega Monster in a Box kit from Monster Transmissions and a new 1800-2200 rpm stall and I’m in the process of going through the rebuild. I also have for it some brand new HD off road rated greasable upper and lower ball joints for it, a full rough country 6 inch suspension lift with the add-a-leaf and the lift blocks as well as the V2 series monotube shocks as well as the V2 steering stabilizer. I hope I feel a difference with it all. It keeps me out of trouble. I used to do welding/fabrication and service and repair of equipment out of a service truck and I’ve been into dirt bikes and motorcycles and mechanics of all type all my life. I’m 24 from acworth Georgia. I love all your videos your so intelligent I would love to meet you. Just listening to you talk sometimes does so much for me. Thank you for this escape. You’re the only person that gets stuff like me I can find it’s so refreshing and satisfying. Everyone else looks at me like it’s Chinese and just thinks I’m stupid. Your amazing

Very good Video. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I know who much time this takes. I have a 1992 700R4 U want to rebuild to put in my 68 Camaro and replace the TH400. Watching this video I noticed all the different items you are suggesting as replacements. only a few of them items had you revealed part numbers for. It would be nice if you could list manufacturer and part numbers so we can purchase what you are recommending. I will be watching your videos on rebuilding the 700R4 and hopefully all goes well with my rebuild.

Thanks for the kind words DMSRacingEngines! Unfortunately, I don't have part numbers beyond what I show on screen and it would take an inordinate amount of time to compile all that stuff when most can be found with a google search...Many parts used are Sonnax so using search terms like "Sonnax 700R4" should get you the part numbers you or anyone else needs...I kinda draw the line there - as you said, it takes time to produce these and some stuff has to take priority over others with the time that I have available to make YT videos. If you are trying to locate a specific part and google searches are coming up empty and you cannot find it, reply back here and I'll see if I can locate it for you on a one-off basis.

Nice video NICK sometimes there's some small nitty grit tips at times I have to watch them twice and listen, for I have 2x 4l60 kick down cable trans to rebuild. You actually answered a question I have been wanting to ask, about the one piece case 4L60E pump weather it would retro fit back into the 4L60. There's some impatient people out there but they need to understand on editing videos, filming them does take time, they need to understand that people have lives too outside there work hours. Also have a friend that had a box done and has a 2-3 flare in it, also am a mechanic on repairing cars, I learnt quick but not every nitty gritty part of it, also learnt the old way, helps into building my own project. 👍 What are your thoughts on the sonnax extra wide band v's the alto wide band.

Thank you, Jose! I do share a fair amount of information in my vids so sometimes folks will need to watch multiple times or re-watch certain parts to get everything...You're absolutely right about the filming/editing time, that can increase total build turnaround by as much as two-fold! Something I completely underestimated when I first started filming these videos, lol. Sonnax vs Alto - the material is the same when comparing the red or kevlar-lined bands between them however the Sonnax band as a much thicker case anchor point so for really HP/full race type applications, I'll run the Sonnax band since I know that the band will take a severe beating, especially when paired with a high ratio servo like the ones from Sonnax or Superior Tech.

Great video Nick, love all the small details that effect the performance and durability. If I wanted to arrange a 700R4 build like this with your business, how could I arrange?

@@nickstransmissions I have freight company friends, so let's leave that for possibly later. I would however appreciate your opinion on replacing aTH400 with a 4-speed automatic behind a 489cu/in BBC producing 550lb/ft into a 3.31 ratio rear end, in a 3,600lb 70 Chevelle that would produce a enjoyable driving experience. What tranny would be your go to? 🤔Thanks

Thanks, David - btw, this video wasn't intended to be a 'how-to' video as I already have a full step-by-step series on the 700R4...It's intended to give folks a possible place to start for spec-ing out a build, what to consider when it comes to parts selection, specific procedures and mods to perform, etc. So while I suppose I can be more concise, it seems to me your expectations for this video are/were misaligned with it's intended purpose.

Thanks again Nick for previous questions Olds 98 700R4 for more durable rebuild. this is exactly information I was concern about on a normal rebuild. I know you probably have minimum 6 years + if not more from all your knowledge. don't know why Lawyers + Doctors charges $600 - 800+++ hr for advice. you should be charging same my opinion on your shop. I'll be happy to pay premium on Tranny person for honest/knowledge/dependable mechanic which is hard to find these days without getting rip off. 🍺🍺🍺 Thanks again for your time! Cheers.
