700R4 Tear Down: Freshly Rebuilt Unit but Lots of Flaws

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I tear down and inspect a 700R4 brought to me by one of my resto-shop customers. This transmission was rebuilt at some point in the past but never installed....It sat collecting dust for years then was sold to my customer who wanted me to go through it to see what's good and what else it may need.
Unfortunately, there was a lot more of the latter compared to the former.

    Great video, Nick. On that pesky shift shaft... if it won't slide right out by hand, you can take a file and file the burr created by the rooster comb. That way it slides out and then easily back in with no worries about damaging your new seal. I've found that it's also quicker to do it that way, as long as I keep a file in close proximity to the bench. I've certainly spent my time fighting with them before I figured out what was actually causing the problem. Anyway, keep on truckin' sir. Your channel is becoming a gold mine of info.

    Thank you, Kevin! And yep, great suggestion re filing or grinding/sanding down burrs on the selector shaft...I actually did that with the selector off-camera on this one but found it seemed to be slightly warped. When I swapped in another shaft, it went in with minimal resistance.

    Perfect timing with this video haven’t made it all the way thru but i just picked up an 88 700r4 for free from a suburban that had around 150k on it so maybe after this video ill have some motivation to crack it open. Thanks for making these videos

    Pretty cool...good job. I keep learning new things and better performance components I want to use on my next rebuild...BW maxpack 3-4 clutch pack w/ Kolene steels, 13 vane pump, vette servo..plus punch out and replace bushings, end-play bearing...i also want to get a new 2-4 band drum. Watch I'll probably never have another 700R4 issue for next 5 years. I'm thinking about buying the components and shelving them.

    Thank you, Knows the Future! Those components sound good to me - add in a Sonnax TV sleeve/plunger kit, .500 boost/.300 rev boost and Transgo 700R4 Jr shift kit and you'll be good to go!

    All around thou you know what ur doing and know a lot about transmissions. I can tell ur a intelligent person n I like how you seem to know everything about each year n years that the trans came out. I tend to just know what parts came in what era. N know what parts can be changed or retrofitted.

    I know the kit says 04 up. But it retro fits very nicely. And you end up with a couple of pieces that come in handy for other builds.

    Hi Larry, thanks for watching...If you're referring to the paper/rubber kits, I actually buy 700R4 VB gaskets separately and purchase a 97-03 4L60E kit as, to your point, comes with everything I need for a 700R4 based on the way I build them vs having a whole bunch of forward drum aluminum apply piston lip seals that I end up tossing...

    Great detail video, after watching I actually feel I can do it myself Lol. but I won't, practice maybe. 1:06:45 common sense would tell me to just change not reused turbine shaft sealings rings. is too petty not to change kit. since trans is opened. AAA+++🍺🍺🍺 Thanks Cheers.

    You said finally some good upgrades n something good for the 3,4 clutch pack. But in reality it was doomed from the get for the drum leaking n bubbling.

    Yep, but the forwards would have burnt up in short order...one step forward, two steps back in terms of parts/procedures, was the overarching theme with this one.

    Not replacing that pump bushing is asking for leaks, or outright front seal blow out on these. Did they enlarge the drain back passage on this?

  • @nickstransmissions

    @nickstransmissions

    2 ай бұрын

    Hi Mike - yep, asking (begging) for a leak there (or bushing walk)...Whomever built it started to enlarge it 5/16" but stopped about 20% in for some reason. Didn't enlarge the hole on the face side of the pump either...This was a slap-it-together job....

    Anyone seeing this I would like to ask a question. Has anyone ever bought a new 700r4? I was watching nick and taking mine apart and there is no saving the trans so he decided to buy a new one and install it myself. I’m looking to see where I would get one from. Preferably around $2000

  • @nickstransmissions

    @nickstransmissions

    Hi Corbin, thank you for watching. There are quite a few companies out there producing 700R4s, plus any local shop can build you one provided you provide the core. Depending on your application and general requirements, $2,000 may or may not be sufficient but for a purely stock rebuild, that should fly (not counting the transmission core itself, assuming you don't already have one).

    @@nickstransmissions the core I have somewhat good, the valve body is not in the best condition and would need to be replaced. I was looking at a few online that would be shipped to my house but I don’t know if any are trustworthy and I don’t wanna spend that kind of money and not get what I paid for. Do you know any trustworthy websites that will sell me a good transmission?

    The only company that I can think to trust is Gearstar though I would simply shop for a local builder that's versed in those transmissions as you'll be paying quite a lot of money w/Gearstar.

    Hi Bobby, thank you for watching...I touch on this very question in a few of my videos (not sure if I mention in this video or not - filmed it about 6 weeks ago) but here's my beginner's list for GM, Ford and Chrysler; I feel these transmissions are simple enough for someone new to transmissions (but not to wrenching in general) but also provide enough of an exposure to each requisite transmission family lineage that once comfortable, the new builder can readily 'graduate' to more complex transmissions like the 4L60E, E4OD/4R100 and Chrysler 4-speed 42RH-48RE units, respectively where there's more than enough demand to fill out an entire career's worth of work: GM : TH350 then TH400 Ford: C6 Chrysler: 727 Torqueflight (note that there are other 727 variants as well as the A904s, which are a bit more nuanced)

    You're welcome, man...I also started on the 700R4s; was my first transmission I ever rebuilt...They aren't too difficult and require only a few special tools...My 700R4 playlist has all the videos you will need to help guide you through the process; add in the ATSG manual for those transmissions and you will be set. You will need a clutch spring compressor tool for the return spring assemblies in the forward and reverse input drums as well as the low reverse clutch return spring. You will also want a set of feeler gauges and access to shop air to perform air checks on your clutch packs as well as pressure testing the forward drum for leaks. Lastly, you will need either expander and resizer tools for the input shaft sealing rings, if using the solid teflon one-piece rings that come in the kits. There are scarf-cut rings available separately that don't require special tools. Here's the 700R4 playlist: kzread.info/head/PLMqgQ_reThtLi6qVnkI6g0OgCjwVxQp67 Please subscribe if you haven't already done so...I'll be putting out another 700R4 video that covers build strategy and parts selection for stock to moderate performance builds, more good information for those wanting to learn more about the 700R4/4L60.
