Ford AOD Autopsy - Neutral in Third Gear

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I tear down a Ford AOD that was recently rebuilt by another transmission shop but presented with a 'neutral in third gear' condition. The shop that brought me the transmission stated the TV cable was adjusted way too tight. While they tried to make TV cable adjustments, unfortunately nothing they attempted were successful in restoring proper function. So it was brought to me for further investigation and overhaul.

In reference to the roll pin. I just had a 4R100 and a 4R75. With the exact same roll pin problem. I tried everything that I have done in the past, with no luck. A friend stopped by and got both of them out in about 5 minutes. So simple, and I never thought about trying it. He took a small drill bit, drilled into the center of the roll pin. Took a pair of Side cutters and pulled the pins out, by holding the drill bit. Still inside the roll pin. If the drill bit breaks after you have the roll pin up enough to grab. No big deal. Just put the roll pin back in. With the broken piece still in it. The drill bit in the 4R100 broke. But the pin was up enough to grab. The other came right out. You might try that next time you have one of those. I was impressed.

Solid suggestion, Larry...I'll def try that if/when I come upon another stubborn roll pin...Worst case scenario, I simply replace the roll pin if it's damaged by the drill bit - no biggie. Keep them coming and thank you for watching!

I worked on a few of those AOD trans. One that comes to mind is that it had no third, or fourth gear. This one in particular, the customer installed a 4 BBL carb, and intake. I knew right away that the TV rod wasn't adjusted correctly, but It wasn't low pressure, he must have really cranked the adjusting screw in, and it blew the third gear drum apart. Very unusual transmission

They are unusual for sure...Especially that 'split-torque' design...Thanks for watching, Peter!

I was wondering if its possible to put a trans temp sensor on the aod. If so where so the hole be drilled

Hi Dillon, you can either tap into the line pressure port, perhaps with a double gauge for both line pressure and trans temp or install an aftermarket pan with a temp sensor port (or modify your existing pan).

One thing not mentioned: The splines in the dampener inside the torque converter, where the long shaft connects to, could be stripped out. I read that will cause upshift into neutral instead of third.

That will as it's equivalent to stripping out the direct drive shaft's splines in the direct drum, which is far more common but both will cause a neutral in 3rd...The converter was basically new and my converter builder mentioned it was perfectly fine inside when he opened it up...It's not common to see those splines stripped but the direct drum's splines stripping out is fairly common and would have happened in this trans if it had been on the road for too much longer...

After the AOD is rebuilt and installed will you adjust the tv cable or the shop?

Hi Adrianna, the primary shop does all the TV cable adjustment since they have the vehicle in their possession..I only do carry-out builds. Thank you for watching!
