Ford AOD Assembly Part 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I finish up the Ford AOD, putting everything back into the case then valve body assembly, filter, ext housing and done. Along the way, I show you how to:
- Check and adjust intermediate clutch clearance
- Set front end play
- Measure for Low Reverse Servo travel

I watch one and two Nick. Impressed with cleanliness precision. Great job. Unfortunately I live in Virginia I wish I could find somebody that I could rely on such workmanship

Thank you, John - appreciate the kind words. I think Fed Ex charges $350-450 to ship via Freight one-way which is a bit much, unfortunately. If it was roughly half that, I'd say just ship it to me for overhaul but it may or may not be worth it to you at those rates...

Another amazing rebuild video from Nick But this time a complete 110 % detail series Disassemble Inspection of hard parts that need replacement Assemble of individual hard parts, drums clutches and tips as how to improve a better lubrication from the tedious valve body And a complete professional assembly of the old school aod transmission I love it I know many young people and old people like me will take advantage of these videos I hope one day you can do an old Ford A4LD for old rangers explorers and Aerostar vans Nick could you post the OTC seal drums protector part number OTC case Bar I have the cheapo blue seal protectors and they are junk Sometimes eBay they have them for a good price I know otc rotunda or miller brands are expensive but I hate the blue ones lol Keep it up Nick and thanks for sharing your knowledge Bless

Thank you for the kind words, Adolfo! Appreciate it. The blue seal protectors are definitely junk, they only seem to last one or two transmissions before they warp/break..I'll reply later with the OTC part numbers for the factory lip seal tools and the gauge bar.

Great video, keep it up. If there's an opportunity to hear more about an AOD with all the stops pulled to handle the most power possible using 4r70w parts etc. that would be of interest.

Thank you for the kind words, Bigstick! I'll definitely film a 4R70 component swap into an AOD if / when I get one in...I don't see those transmissions too often but hopefully one that needs 4R70 parts will come in soon.

Excellent work as always Nick ! On the T80L-77030-A servo tool - might I as you to measure the overall thickness of the movable "feet" that sit in the snap ring groove ?. I would like to see how it compares to the servo cover thickness. I have often wondered what this dimension is on the tool.

Hi @nickstransmissions great tips on this video! Where did you get that case holder for the transmission stand? Was hoping to use one in a 4R70W. Thanks!

Hi Frank, thank you for watching...I bought stand and fixture on eBay then had my machinist make me an adaptor sleeve out of stainless cylinder bar stock to allow them to work together.

You mention the need to replace bushing in the AOD, would you recommend this with a low miles 17K that has lost the overdrive band do to TV cable clip failure. I have one I need to do and it will be my first AOD build/repair. I have done lots of C4 and C6 plus several other manufacturer transmissions just never had an AOD in my stable. I have found your videos on this trans to be very informative though.

Hi Tim, thank you for watching and the kind words. If only 17k miles on it, and bushings were replaced last time (or the trans has only 17k original miles) then they should be fine. You can check the bushing wear by mating the bushings with their respective journals and checking for 'side play'. All bushings should have been .001-.002 clearance max between bushing and journal...while this is hard to measure, you can tell if the clearance is at or very close to that range by simply spinning the journal in the bushing and see if you can feel it move sideways...If it doesn't and there is no binding, etc they should be fine. 2WD applications tend to have more aggressively worn rear case bushings than 4WD units. Pay close attention to the pump bushings, they tend to wear aggressively as well.

@@nickstransmissions Thank You for your reply, this is actually an all original 17K mile 88 Thunderbird very nice car and have all documentation of the cars history. It was very unfortunate that the TV cable clip broke likely brittle from age. Just hope I can repair it and not have to spend so much. I already ordered seal installation tools and the like to do it properly. Most of the rest of the tools I have as I also have a small home machine shop so I have most of the rest of the tools I would need. Really like your videos and look forward to checking out some of your other ones as well.

Nice, very rare these days to hear of a vehicle from the 80s or 90s with that low mileage. If you have a small machine shop at home, you should be able to make all of the bushing installer tools you need as well as pullers to remove them but at only 17k miles, most of the bushings should be fine...One other bushing to look at carefully is the direct drum bushing...If that's worn, you'll want to replace it and it's a pain to remove. Hopefully yours is fine...

Pretty finicky transmission to do, and a fair few tools needed. Towards the end sounded like the HARLEM GLOBE TROTTERS outside.

Yep, very finicky - I liken them to the 200-4R, very similar in terms of fussiness. If you watch enough of my videos, you'l hear all sorts of weird stuff in the background including someone crashing into a parked car down the street, lol. Thank you for watching, Jose!

I noticed that you don't sand your steels. I always do because that is what I was taught. I always sanded all pressure plates, steels, and band surfaces. I think it gives you a grabby shift. I might be full of shit, but I always do it.

Hey Peter, I usually do some prep work on used steels and apply plates that need it (ie have some slip marks) but haven't ever done so on new steels or apply/backing plates. The apply plates all looked good to me as well. Thank you for watching, as always!
