I am doing a timing chain, cam phaser job with new lifters and roller rockers. I had a huge problem trying to remove the old followers on some of the cylinders following your guidance. I ended up having to remove the cam shafts to get them all out. I though maybe the chain had slipped and caused the cam lobes to be too far from the base circle to get them out and I didnt want too risk popping off keepers or other damage. After following all your steps for timing chain and phaser replacement will all Ford parts and having replaced all the lifters before reinstalling the cams, I then started to reinstall the followers and once again was having difficulty putting them in. Finally after struggling through 3 of them I inspected the genuine OTC 6684 tool that I had purchased from a defunct Ford Dealership selling off tools, I found that the part that pushes the valve down was bent! It wasnt real obvious but it was enough to only allow the valve to be depressed partially. So I carefully straightened out the tool and it was like magic. All those follower went in with no trouble. Just goes to show how careful you are to do it right some things just go wrong. Im just happy to have it resolved. I will be done with the job tommorrow. Im 68 years old and a retired Ford Tech, but I havent done major engine work for decades as I specialized in electrical/electronics/AC/ etc. Thanks for all your great videos and guidance.

Same here. Not sure why theirs so much hate on the 5.4. Just hit 200K miles on mine and still runs great. However every 3 months or so I end up replacing something. Alternator, pulley bearings, starter, ignition coils.... Always something to fix but the engine itself is great. After seeing this video i'm not going to attempt replacing these roller followers but am definitely taking it to a mechanic to replace.

I have a 2008 Ford Expedition. I was blessed to have come across your page on KZread to better educate me on this motor. You REALLY helped me out. I spent a while looking places up, took your advice on a lot of things to look at for at dealerships so I drove to Orlando to get the roller followers, camshafts (if needed) and timing done. I was going to get the updated oil pump too. In Miami I was quoted 4,500 and in Orlando I was quoted $2,700, both at Ford dealerships…Orlando being the cheapest. Once the tech looked at the truck I was told I have metal shavings in my oil filter and said that I need a new motor because the motor is eating itself from the inside out. They did not open the motor at all. I requested prior to coming up here that I wanted to see whatever the tech finds but there was no communication. Now I am headed back to Miami to another dealership for a second opinion. I sure wish I was near Chicago brother, you would definitely done my motor over/replaced it. It’s so hard finding people that’ll do it right! Thanks for all those videos my friend. Any advice will help out.

  • @FordTechMakuloco

As long as the engine oil was maintained you will be ok with just a timing job. Fine metal in the filter would be the result of the chain hitting the front cover like they all do, no big deal. $2,700 sounds way too low like they are not replacing everything, $4,500 sounds right for a dealer. I even charge $3,500 to $4k with all the extras as an independent.

I bought a 2005 f150 Lariat with 136k miles that was in great shape, but had a misfire when I test drove it and also a tick. I first did the spark plugs and coils and found all but 2 were loose and one had the end broke off. It drove better but still didn’t have power and felt like it was still misfiring and ticking . I then decided to change all the roller followers and lash adapters. I took the valve covers off and found my problem, it was a roller follower locked up and the cam had been just grinding away on it on the right side of my engine. After replacing my cam, roller followers, and lash adapters my truck runs like new. I couldn’t have done it without your amazing videos!

Mark, I quit fighting to get each individual rocker fished out. I remove the camshaft. The cam phaser more than likely needs to replaced as a regular maintenance item anyway. Rookie mistake... I placed a towel near the phaser to prevent anything from falling down into the pan. Placed another towel on top and cleaned up all gasket material and dirt. Started working and was stumped why the engine was so hard to turn over with 18mm. Realized I forgot to remove the towel and binded it up in the phaser, chain, etc. Slowly cutaway material and turned the motor over manually until I could pull the towel out of the teeth. Hopefully I did not stretch the chain or throw off timing. Guess I will be doing complete timing job next. Still can't believe I did that... thank you for the great video!

Great video thanks! I missed the "very important part" about pushing as you compress the spring. A bit of stomach in the throat moment when I saw a keeper fall as I lifted out the rocker. Luckily the tool had shifted a bit and the spring was pushing the valve sideways preventing it from falling into the cylinder. With some strong magnets, a little pry to center the top, I managed to get it all back together, released the tension to make sure the keepers were seated and then recompressed it to put the new rocker in.

I know this is an older video, but if you are doing a full timing chain job, it seems to me it would be easier just to pull the camshafts out to change the followers rather to going through the whole spring compression routine. If you are only changing one follower, yeah, I see the spring compression method being the better choice. I love your videos and have helped me my F150 in tip top shape. Hopefully I would not have to do this job to it. Keep them coning.

I have a 2010 Ford Explorer AWD with the 4.6 in it. It seems to have 3 distinct issues. The first issue is when accelerating smoothly up to highway speed the truck can begin to shudder quite violently until I apply more throttle as if to pass. Second issue the brakes when braking normally the truck can pull very hard generally to the right in both forward and reverse. I recently had both upper control arm replaced followed up with an alignment and since then I hear a lot of metal on metal while turning left.

Thanks to you i managed to get my timing done on my 13 expedition! I did have a big question though in regards to oil pressure. Where you talk about the hole in the new roller followers, and how it differs from the original, how much of a difference would it make? Reason i ask is, after flipping through tons of forums and comments i ended up going with the melling m340hv pump, given at the time of install it was closing in on 200k and all sources i was reading were saying how much more benefit the higher volume would be. Now that ill be going back in to get these adjusters and arms done, i want to make sure that increased pressure wouldnt cause more harm than good. Thanks for all you do!

The 4.6L 3V engine in my '06 Stang has developed a tick which has gotten louder over time. I put a stethoscope on the valve covers, but that didn't seem to reveal much. I'm suspecting either a follower or lash adjuster. Another issue I'm experiencing is increased oil consumption so I'm suspecting either guides or seals. At this point I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and spring for reconditioned heads.

Unless the adjuster is collapsed or obviously damaged, I don't see a point in replacing them -- unless there is some tribal knowledge indicating otherwise.
