Ford 5.4 2V Build - Rear Main Seal Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is Part 4 of a much longer series of videos that get into a motor project I did with my son. The motor is a 1999 Ford 5.4 Liter 2 valve (2V). When he got the truck it had a bad knocking sound. The oil looked like a silver metallic spray paint when we inspected it so we decided to remove the motor with engine problems and replace it with a used one. It only made sense to replace gaskets and seals as well as do an oil pump replacement with an performance upgrade pump among several other things.
The focus of this video is installing the rear main seal (FelPro part # BS40644) on our 5.4 liter 2 valve motor. I also install a new Ford oil slinger (Ford part # F65Z-6310-A). I understand there are many discussions regarding the oil slinger; some say the oil slinger isn't needed and others believe the oil slinger is critical to ensuring a leak-free rear main seal. Ultimately, my thought was the motor came from the factory with the oil slinger installed so I will install a new oil slinger. The purpose of the videos in this series is just to show you how we did the work so maybe you can save time and learn from the mistakes we made along the way. Do anything you see in the videos at your own risk.

Future videos in this series will focus on the details of individual smaller jobs throughout the project. That should keep them shorter and easier to dive into the detailed how-to's of each project. When possible, I'll provide torque specs, tightening sequences, bolt sizes and helpful tips.
The next video in this series will be installing a new high performance oil pump from Melling. That video will be followed by the threaded CalVan Tools spark plug inserts. Other videos in this series will include prepping the heads, head gasket replacement, timing chain kit, and more!

Hello David and thanks for stopping by! Yes, everything is great. Unfortunately, I've been away from YT for a bit but I'm back. I've been making content this past year, I just wasn't editing and posting it. I have hundreds of hours of footage taken from various projects and decided it was time to get back to work on my channel. I even purchased a 2005 T&C Limited to continue (and finish) my series on that generation of vans. I plan to do at least 20-30 more repair videos to add to the series starting in May probably. In the meantime, I bought a new computer and software to work on content I already have over the next month or two. Now I'm rambling (kind of like my videos huh? LOL). I appreciate you taking a moment to check in on me. Thank you. Stay in touch!

Did you develop a leak around that top left bolt hole you missed with sealant? And you really only need a bead about 1/2 the size of what you have here.

Remember, it's for his sons truck, Not his. So if it does develop an oil leak. He can always say that he's trying to use it as a teaching moment. I mean that's what my "father" would do to me. But then again, not all fathers are d***'s like mine. All joking aside, It'll be fine. Plus it's good to know that he has a master mechanic such as yourself watching the channel. Someone who's going to be ultra critical about things. Oh and maybe next time you should actually know something about what you're critiquing. That was NOT a bolt hole. It was one of the dowel pin hole, that's NOT introduced to oil pressure. That means that there's no, zero, none, not even close to a reason for putting ANY Permatex on the outside of that hole. Geez Karma's a b*tch

@@abitoffcenter383 pause the video at 6:30 and look at the top left hole of the cover. That's not a dowel pin hole smart guy. And I wasn't aware that there was zero pressure in the crankcase, that's news to me..... Nice try to act smart though.

@@mikebrosnan2895 My apologies. I was apparently looking at it the wrong way. As in not thinking of it being turned around to be placed onto the block. Not my first fuck up and most definitely nit my last.

Why are you cleaning inside that place? Why open if the engine is running fine'?

Anytime I work on anything like this I will make sure to clean everything I have access to before putting it all back together. In the case of this rear main seal replacement I want to make sure all the sealing surfaces are completely prepped and cleaned to ensure the sealant being used will have a good bond and not leak. It's super important for a job like this because to gain access to this again you would need to pull either the motor or the transmission.

Can I replace the seal by just removing the transmission?

  • @javosgarage

Hi David. I have done motor rebuilds in my son's '99 F250 (Heritage body) and my wife's '08 Expedition and I believe in both of those cases this could be done by just removing the transmission. Quite frankly, if you have enough room the remove the transmission I can't see why you couldn't perform a rear main seal replacement due to the open area left when the transmission is removed. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for stopping by!
