What Is A Head Gasket, How Does It Work, & What Does It Mean To Blow A Head Gasket?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
►A blown head gasket is one of those commonly mentioned terms you'll run into over the years, whether you're interested in cars or not. It's something you will hopefully never have to experience, but you should know what it means and how it happens just in case.
To put it simply, a blown head gasket is when the gasket that secures the cylinder head to the engine block has failed. Coolant, oil, or combustion gasses from the cylinder can then leak out through the failed gasket. The consequences of this can range from a visible leak of oil or coolant to a noticeable reduction in performance and driveability.
Watch episode 2 of Automotive Slangs Explained to dive deeper into the topic of a blown head gasket and to see what this looks like as it happens inside your engine.

Bro, you literally anticipated every question I had and then answered each one so clearly even I could understand, with my severely limited mechanical knowledge. Thank you very much for making this absolute gem of a video!

Poor subie owners - as if the shots in the video weren't harsh enough 😁
The video does a great job of explaining the various ways that a head gasket can fail and cause problems. In this day and age of automotive technology it may be more appropriate to say that a head gasket is "damaged" rather than blown due to the fact that many cars are being driven with damaged gaskets with chronic symptoms whereas a car with a "blown" gasket will generally have acute symptoms which severely prevent the use of the vehicle. Keep rolling....

Very good point Junkyarddawg - as you mentioned, technology advances have made the "failures" not as drastic as they perhaps once were, often times leading to people driving much longer than they really should. Good insight
Im a bit of a dummy when it comes to automotive. I found this as yesterday a guy was in a parking lot with his hood up next to the gas station i was stopping at. Thick blue smoke pumping out the tail pipe, and some out under the hood. When he was finally pulling away, he was crawling while blue smoke poured out. An old man told me he had a blown head gasket. Thank you for making a simple, easy to understand, video that allows me to understand all that. I like trying to be more of a handyman, and youtubers like you can at least give me the ability to understand. Thank you!
Wow you explained that perfectly All the right details, at the right time in a comprehensive way There are so many crappy videos on YT--- where things are either too simplified lacking detail, or too much detail
Fantastic video! Very very well executed and you left no question unanswered. Thank you
This is one of the most detailed and informative videos I’ve seen on cars. I really appreciate this🔥

Here is my boy. Driving on the highway, pop the hood, found out coolant level low, OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP and top off with water.

Blew two head gaskets on my S-10 as a kid. Both times, after a coolant drain/change. Back in the day it was yellow and didn't last 100k miles. Remember to let the coolant circulate before driving and watch the temp gauge like a hawk if you change it. 1st time I didn't put 2 and 2 together, sure did after the second.
Appreciate the explanation

An awesome video! 👌 Btw I thought that only wbite smoke imdicates the blown gasket whereas the blue one means a broken piston ring but I seem to have been wrong?
Excellent explanation.

My old 1990 Celica is beat up with all bald tires and all the warning lights on. When I drive it's sluggish with white smoke coming out the exhaust. Engine is always hot on the temperature gage indicator.
For oil and coolant maybe making their respective circuits separate between top and bottom and alleviate the problem a bit.
hellow sir does a bad head gasket ha something to do with excessive oil leak from the engine breather that causes turbo to oil leakd?...thank you^^
Thanks for this, great explanation for a moron like me
Blew a head gasket on a 1984 Mercury Capri 4cyl which was a mustang knock off. Happened a few days after I shifted from 5th to 1st by accident going down a hill beating a yellow light in Poughkeepsie. Totally missed 3rd gear.

Batter to have head gasket replaced, or replace engine?

Replace the headgasket as long as no internal damage has happened. MUCH MUCH cheaper and usually easier!

Could be nice to get back even more to the basics. Why should there be two parts for the engine? block and head. Why not just make one block? And why does there have to be a 3rd gasket between them, why not seal them somehow without it. Thanks. EDIT: Oh never mind, you answered it, ur da best dude!
owned a Subaru and beat the crap out of it never blown a head gasket. Maintenance is key.
Honda Accord 1.5T's are now replacing Subaru for top head gasket failures .
So in theory a bad timing chain can cause wrong detonation, possibly blowing a head gasket?
Blew my headgasket. It was kinda cool, because I just scrapped the car and as a result had to quit the job I was working which I hated!
