Do Head Gasket Sealers Actually Work (FULL 2yr TEST with Engine Teardown)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Replacing a Head Gasket can be difficult and expensive. Sometimes your car is not worth fixing and this is where a head gasket sealer in a bottle comes in handy. Do these head gasket sealers actually work? How long do they last? How do they work? What does a bad head gasket look like? Do head gasket sealers clog radiators?
In this video I show you how to use a head gasket sealer to repair the head gasket and test it for 2yrs and 10,000 miles. I then tear down the engine and show you how the headgasket failed, how the sealer worked, and if the radiator got clogged up with sealer.

I used Blue Devil when my 97 Acura TL 3.2L started overheating continuously. I dye tested it to confirm and it was my head gasket. I followed Blue Devil step by step. I also bought a brand new radiator and flushed the system with a water hose with the top radiator hose pushing it through it and with no thermostat with bottom hose disconnected. With that I started the vehicle as well to fully flush all the coolant out. Applied the BD and it worked. This was at 100k miles and I am at 190k miles after 10 years! No issues.

Was wondering if it would be a good idea to drain your coolant system after the leak has stopped. Agree that it looks impressive and it didn’t clog things up by why temp fate? At that point you’ve probably kicked up some nasties in that system. Guess that was a long winded way of saying I’d drain it and just replace with properly mixed coolant.

This is the first time I write a comment on KZread and I’ve had this account for like 15 years. Simply because it has to be said that I’ve never seen any video that says explains the situation so clearly the way you just did. Respect
I have a 2013 Dodge Avenger R/T had the exact same problems as this car. No smoke billowing, no white milky substance in the engine cap, but the coolant reservoir reeked of Combustion gas. After $1,450 at the repair shop with no repair just money lost I was about to give up until I stumbled across this video. Followed the instructions to the Letter. Took a day or two and had to top off the reservoir a few times but afterwards no overheating, running smoother and stronger. Reservoir still smells of Combustion gas but it’s probably due to the old radiator fluid, gonna flush it and test it one last time. I really wanna thank you Chris Fix my only regret is that I didn’t come across this video before I spent $1,450 😅

I drove a car for several years with some head gasket sealer. Luckily, the head gasket was leaking externally and not internally. It was flying out of the side of the block and was therefore MUCH easier to seal. If you are leaking internally, it rarely works.

Probably because this is such a common and annoying ass problem
Been using the sealers for years. Grew up originally using just basic sodium silicate which was easy to buy. Not all gaskets are created equal. Also the liquid glass method wasn't always wise. I've had more success with Steal Seal and K-seal never used the ultimate formula. Had the most failures with BlueDevils formula. Tested most on the markets as the budget of customers its what they brought for me to use. I just did what the manufacturer stated for instructions. My friends 2004 Impala leaked in 2007 did a new gasket. In 2010 it blew again only 68000 miles and 2x blown so I did the Steel Seal this time and now there 201k on the vehicle and hasn't leaked or blown another spot. Thats the longest lasting quick fix I've been able to track. As the owner gave me the vehicle and I gave it to my brother and he sold it to a friend in need. The Bars Block seal imo should be only temporary as I've had to do many radiator and heater core flushes as it clogged either the radiator or the heater core. Especially in aluminum rads. Seen 4 Land Rovers clogged bottom of the rads. Just replace the gasket in those beasts.

Very excellent video and test, hats off! After watching this I added Blue Devil to my 2015 Chevrolet 2500HD with the 6.6 Diesel. I wasn’t sure if the compression on the diesels would be too much for this type of fix. My truck was pushing exhaust gas into the coolant system and overflowing the tank. The truck ran well despite this. No overheating, it did towing, daily driving at 75mph, approximately 500-750 miles a week. It’s used for business purposes. Just left a puddle everywhere I shut it down and needed to be topped off with coolant weekly. Through your description of the products I chose the Blue Devil because it seems like the exhaust leak I was having would heat this product in the damaged area and seal it up. Plus I was scared to use one with the fibers and clog the system up. It worked like Magic! I followed their instructions but ran to truck twice as long to make sure it was hot. I haven’t added any coolant since I put the thermostats back in. Little over 30,000 miles on it since I did this and I’m knocking on wood as I type this up, Thanks for the video and the confidence to try it.

watch out for that over pressure on the coolant side, i recently lost both a radiator and a heater core due to it. it was just pushing coolant out the expansion tank cap,,over flow, that releases coolant when above 18 psi or so...problem was the pressure would climb faster then the coolant was being released causeing not only for the car to loose a bunch of coolant in just a 15 mile drive( liter or so) , the coolant pressure would peak at 26 psi. usually peaking after i turned the engine off. this extra pressure blew open the heater core..and a week later blew the side out of the radiator. then i finally realized what was going on.

The BEST video about head gasket sealers! Awesome, Chris is THE MAN !
I've never put any kind of stop-leak in my car, bought it 8 years ago. 2008 Chrysler 300c 5.7L hemi Busted a lifter. Did the replacement with a friend. Also had a blown head gasket. When I took the heads off, I saw the break in the gasket with stop-leak near it and EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE COOLING PORTS. The far rear ports on both sides were COMPLETELY clogged, so the back of my engine hadn't been getting proper coolant for who knows how many years. Probably what eventually caused my lifter to die, along with idling for too long on a fairly regular basis, smoking cigarettes in the parking lot before work (Oops). That's my experience with sealer/stop-leak. And, dude... What a video! Got yourself a new sub
First comment I've ever made on a youtube video is now: This was an excellent and comprehensive review, thanks for putting in the effort. I've always thought those products were snake oil... but if your in a bind it is totally worth a $20 swing for the fences. After 10K miles if it started to leak again? I've been using that exact Bar's Leaks sealer on a 2010 Prius (that year is known for blowing head gaskets). First sealed it in late Feb 2020, and the problem did come back roughly 10k miles later. I've put about 25k miles on it so far and still going (bought it at 193k, 218k now) about to add some more sealer again. It needs more when it starts to shake briefly on a cold start, and at the same time I notice the coolant level very slowly going down. I didn't use as much the 2nd time because I figured after the first time, it was still mostly sealed. I think I used 1/3rd of a bottle the last time. Oil has been clean the whole time. Leak was pretty minor from the get-go, would take days of normal driving to notice the reservoir having less coolant in it. 16:30 The bottle shows more steps than that...first step after pouring the sealer is to get it up to temp (In a Prius that means go for a short drive), and then stop and cool off completely, but THEN you're supposed to also go for a second 15 minute drive after it cooled from the first step, not the next day. That's when I take it on the freeway for 20 minutes or so. THEN the next day and for the next 10k, it runs great. Maybe that's what caused the thermostat on the Jaguar to stick closed for a bit? I really have no idea, I'm no mechanic and these problems have variables.

I've been working on cars for nearly fifty years, and I've tried many different head gasket sealers over the decades. Usually the sealers from my early days were made to just get you home, but over the last decade things have definitely changed. My experience over the last ten years has seen quite a big difference in the quality and performance of these additives, and the one I recommend most would be Blue Devil, from their rear main seal repair, to transmission shift additive, and head gasket sealer, they are definitely The Best in my opinion!!!!

what you should recommend is get the actually fixed, if you can't afford that high bill just get a cheaper car and don't go to a dealer ship for starters. If you're car is worth $1500 i doubt anyone will be able to spend 30 000$ on a newer car, so yea, fix it if the bodywork is in good shape. On the used market you'll never know if there is sawdust in the engine or not.

Its more of a quick fix until you can get it repaired properly. Ive seen alot of issues with sealers. And i mean. Alot. Its up to you though to roll the dice.
My dad just blew the head gasket on the family's 2011 Chevy Aveo with an overheat. (I'm pretty sure the rad has a leak and I'll be pulling it tomorrow to confirm.) The reservoir now blows the coolant out when the cap is off which it never did before and I found water/coolant ontop of the pistons after pulling the spark plugs. But your video is so comprehensive that it has given me the confidence to give the Blue Devil a try once I get the rad leak fixed, versus taking the head off the block and praying to everything since I've never even opened a valve cover before. I'll try to remember to update this as it goes.
