Foods to AVOID while on Prednisone - Dr. Megan the Prednisone Pharmacist. You don't have to suffer on prednisone without hope. 👇
Sometimes it feels like no matter what we eat while on prednisone, we will gain weight.
But that's not true.
Some foods are worse than others for people taking prednisone.
Some foods are...
dare I say it...
practically poisonous for prednisone patients. (That's a lot of P's!)
Find out one surprising food group NOT on this list!
This content discusses how weight gain can be a side effect of Prednisone and then offers ways to avoid such weight gain by avoiding certain foods, such as simple sugars, white flour, and processed snacks. Additionally, it is important to limit caffeine and alcohol, which can lead to bone loss. However, dietary fat should not be avoided as it does not cause weight gain.
Chapters:
00:00 - 07:13 Avoiding Weight Gain While on Prednisone: An Overview for Pharmacists
Key Takeaways
1. Choosing healthy foods over processed alternatives can have positive effects on weight gain.
2. Weight gain induced by Prednisone can be reduced with a healthy diet.
3. Limiting caffeine and alcohol can help to preserve bone health.
4. Omitting dietary fat does not help to prevent weight gain.

So i recently just started taking predniosone (10MG tapered) for an inflammation problem i have from my chronic sinusitis for 9 days. While im taking predniosone, can i still consume things with protein? Such as a protein shake? I go to the gym so it will feel strange for me not to take my daily protein shake 😅. Also will i be able to slowly eat foods with sodium and sugar arter finishing the 9 days? Or will i have to wait for the predniosone to fully wear off before resuming to eat those things.

I’m 14, and on 40mg of prednisone right now and gained like 20 pounds in a month. I can’t eat potassium and can’t have salt because of my kidneys, I’m also allergic to fruit. Literally all that’s left is carbs!!! And the cravings are crazy! So i just eat chicken everyday but I’m so tired of eating it. Also snacks just don’t exist. There’s no snack that I’ve found that has a decent serving size that’s low in everything. And the moon face is horrible!

  • @PrednisonePharmacist

    @PrednisonePharmacist

Hello! I think if you're going to use a sweetener, Stevia is a good choice. Step 1 is avoiding all processed foods, especially those which contain high fructose corn syrup. Avoiding as many refined sweets as possible is critical for people on prednisone. Regarding your pain, I understand. It's so tough getting off prednisone for some people. Have you had your cortisol levels checked? Have you talked to your doctor about this pain? It might be that you're suffering adrenal insufficiency when you decrease your dose below 5 mg. This is a tough stage you're in!

If it's made from sodium, that's the problem. Sodium chloride is the main ingredient in sea salt, himalayan and pink salt, so that's what we need to avoid. "Nu-Salt" is an alternative made from potassium instead of sodium.

Hello Aida, I hear ya, not recognizing yourself in the mirror. It looks like you've already made a lot of important lifestyle changes to minimize the weight gain and moon face. Unfortunately the only real "cure" for moon face is lowering the dose. Moon face gets rounder the higher the dose, and smaller the lower the dose. You probably NEED the prednisone for some good reason, so at this point it's best to give yourself grace and realize this too shall pass. I'm sorry if that's not what you were hoping to hear!

I now have no appetite and no desire for food and I continue to shrink! Although I have to say that stress does affect my weight bigtime and I just do not want to eat after taking preds. After being started on prednisilone and my PMR seriously improved my sister was diagnosed with cancer and died almost two weeks ago. +AL'mighty Jr that sounds terrible. Tinnitus is such a miserable thing because no one else can tell how you feel. My ultimate list of prednisone side effects gathered from five different drug databases does not include tinnitus. So I think it’s pretty unlikely that prednisone caused it. It could be the methotrexate but is quite rare. Often side effects can be reversed by stopping meds. But this is so rare, it’s hard to predict. There’s even a study in which they used methotrexate to help stop tinnitus. So... sounds like a mystery to me. It could be the methotrexate or it could not be... either way. I wish this was more clear-cut and easy to say across the internet! I’m so sorry you are suffering!

I've never been on corticoids but I've had stiff levels of stress related weight gain secondary to mood swings since age 9. Now 19. Cutting the weight down and fixing the mood swings required me to go on a ketogenic diet aged 17 and eating a LOT of salt - bad for someone on corticoids but I surmise it may've reduced my endogenous cortisol (which is used to hold onto salt). The lost bone should come back if you resistance exercise once off corticoid. IANADTINMA

+Ellenor Malik yes, combination of salt and cortisol imbalance can happen. Sorry for the unclear answer. This is definitely something you can have tested and work with a doctor to determine.

Well ive also seen it recommended to limit Fat intake from any source, healthy or not. This includes Avocado, Olive oil etc This really limits a huge amount of food. I can understand limiting processed foods, and even high fructose fruit but to start limiting things like Avocado (which is super low sugar, high in potassium and higher fat). Where are people to actually get daily requirement of Calories to actually function? Or even build muscle? You cant just waste away. This is absolutely ridiculous. So you compose meals low in sugar (easy, just eat salads/mostly vegetables) and then low in Fat (getting harder) AND stick strictly to 2,500 calories) which is an estimated value for a mans calorie intake. This does not leave you much ways to even retain muscle. And what happens if the person is actually already thin, including having little visceral fat at all. What happens in that case?

I don’t recommend avoiding all the oils. I avoid canola oil and other super trans-fat containing oils. I love avocado and olive oil. I don’t recommend eating low fat.

I have repeatedly refused to take prednisone pills or corticosteroid injections when doctors prescribe it (usually for allergies or suspected allergic reactions.) Synthetic cortisol which is exactly what those medications are don't just suppress allergies. They suppress the entire immune system. They can also cause elevated insulin levels and weight gain which is harmful if you have atherosclerosis as I do.

It takes weeks for the suppression to kick in. A short term pulse here and there for an occasional flare up won’t cause any harm.
