Prednisone

The pro-drug prednisone must be converted in the body to its active form prednisolone. Prednisone, a synthetic anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid, remains among the 25 most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States and appears to be on an upward trend.
As an anti-inflammatory, prednisone combats a wide array of conditions ranging from skin rashes, allergic reactions, arthritis and COPD to gastrointestinal conditions, kidney disease, thyroiditis and even cancer.
While short term use of prednisone rarely results in significant complications, prolonged therapy produces a dramatic and lengthy list of unwanted adverse reactions. Among the side effects associated with prednisone are diabetes, susceptibility to infection, reactivation of tuberculosis, sodium retention and swelling of the legs. Other unwanted issues involve osteoporosis, avascular necrosis of the bones, cataracts, skin fragility, substantial weight gain and muscle wasting.
Prednisone also results in a number of psychiatric conditions ranging from hyperactivity, restlessness and euphoria to agitation, depression, anxiety and insomnia. Mental confusion, difficulties with memory and attention deficits occur at moderate doses. Prednisone may precipitate manic attacks.
Finding the correct dose of prednisone varies with the individual, the underlying disease and a variety of issues linked to the physician’s prescribing habits. Keeping the dose of prednisone relatively low and continuing treatment for only as long as necessary seems prudent. Prednisone must not be stopped abruptly but rather tapered over weeks to months depending on dose and duration of therapy.

Imagine being this smart & well informed…😳Kudos, doctor, for so thoroughly explaining the Wonder Drug that can destroy ! 😱 Prednisone was Rxd for me once or twice a year for asthma Sx, as well as outbreaks of poison Ivy, Oak &/or Sumac. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, as the doses weren’t high, & the use relatively short term. And my arthritic joints never felt better. Unfortunately, I lost both talus (ankle) bones resulting in replacement of these bones (allografts), as well as my left hip due to osteonecrosis (AVN). My R hip is necrotic also, & it’s a matter of time, I’ve been told, before it, too, will need to be replaced. Risk Benefit at its worst…☹️, but I don’t think I could have done without it. *JQ

ah yes, I've recently become interested in steroids. In congruence to the topic of prednisone i was recently prescribed flonase (fluticasone propionate), also a steroid, for allergic rhinitis & have been reluctant to use it because of the side effect profile. It really should be used sparingly but does work extremely well as a anti-inflammatory. I used it once & it has worked exceptionally well in treating my congestion. Immediately i could breathe again however I've suffered extreme eye dryness & intraocular pressure. I didn't realize the sudden eye dryness & pressure was being caused by the flonase until I started researching steroids. When taken as an oral med or injectable its much more damaging than intranasal or topical use because of its systemic mode of action rather than a more local effect. It seems I am extremely sensitive to this class of drug. I have yet to take another dose, but fortunately the congestion has not returned full force since having taken it 10 days ago. Thanks for the talk Dr . Landow!

@@imassage619 About 5 yr ago I had a sinus infection, so my doctor prescribed me Bactrim. At the end of that course my Uvula was swollen so big it was lying on my tongue. I ended up in the ER. They gave me a boost of Prednisone there and a 1wk dosepack w no taper. At the end of that course, I had a severe reaction. I became extremely weak, was puking bile, could barely eat, my throat was course. I lost a bunch of weight, I was lying in the bathroom thinking I could die. My muscles started to ache really bad, terrible mood swings. Months later I had kidney stones, which may have not been related. I think it permanently gave me some back problems and lowered my T levels. None of which I can prove, but I know what I experienced, it was horrible.

Definitely made me super edgy even on a super low dose of 10 mg. Stopped it after 5 days. 😅
